This 98 pages chapter is second longest and last chapter of the book. It seems that UPSC framed lengthy unconventional dynasty based Q from beautiful maps of Dynasties given in this chapter. How can we forget Mitakshara and Dayabhaga system Q! Many off-beat dynasties which ruled in various parts of India also dealt in brief here. To cut a long story short, we are now entering the medieval Indian history years…a lot this chapter also has to tell...

This chapter gave many unconventional Qs such as on Vishti, Kulyavapa and Dronavapa, Ajanta at Waghora river and several statement based Questions which were picked verbatim. Land related aspects of ancient India dealt in much detailed manner and important for exam also. Classical age of art also began in these years…so here we go...

    8. Chapter 7: Power and Piety: The Maurya Empire, c. 324–187 BCE

This 48 pages chapter is extremely important. Ashoka the Great is the reason actually. His ‘dhamma’ and pillars are major attraction of this chapter. It deals with History as well as Art and Culture part also of paper too. Fully unconventional Qs on Sohgaura, Ranyo Ashoka description at Kanaganahalli are straight from boxes. Many more boxes also contain such information, so let’s begin the story of first major dynasty of our ancient India…

    7. Chapter 6: Cities, Kings, and Renunciants: North India, c. 600–300 BCE

This 64 pages chapter contains a lot of information. Still, lack of consensus is there on many aspects, but these 300 years of our history is important because of the advent of two major philosophical doctrines i.e. Buddhism and Jainsim. Rise of Mahajanapadas marked beginning of second urbanization after decline of Harappa.

    6. Chapter 5: Cultural Transitions: Images from Texts and Archaeology, c. 2000–600 BCE

This 74 pages chapter is not an easy nut to crack because of its subjectivity, debates on Aryan invasion theory, status of women, usage of iron etc. Except in 2017, in last 5 years, UPSC barely framed a Q on this theme. Not needed though, at least in Prelims. Things are not too much from Prelims viewpoint, but still we will see all relevant facts which are purely objective in nature, keeping aside those facts, on which there is no consensus even today.

    6. Chapter 5: Cultural Transitions: Images from Texts and Archaeology, c. 2000–600 BCE

  7. 02/15/2022

    4. Chapter 3: The Transition to Food Production: Neolithic, Neolithic–Chalcolithic, and Chalcolithic Villages, c. 7000–2000 BCE

See, this chapter (38 pages) is also like last chapter, but slightly important from exam viewpoint. In 2021 Prelims, there was a Q on sites like Burzhom, Ganeshwar and Chandraketugarh known for! Here, we came to know about the food production and domestication of animals, and how things developed towards something more better. Maps will be imp for sites purpose. History optional students can see the debate on necessity of domestication in this chapter.

    4. Chapter 3: The Transition to Food Production: Neolithic, Neolithic–Chalcolithic, and Chalcolithic Villages, c. 7000–2000 BCE

See, this chapter (50 pages) is one of the major chapter. 3 PYQs in last 5 years connect to this chapter. All major Harappan sites we will see here and lots of trivia about Indus Valley Civilization. It talks about everything related to this civilization.

  9. 02/14/2022

    3. Chapter 2: Hunter-Gatherers of the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Ages

See, this chapter (36 pages) is not so much important from UPSC viewpoint. It only deals with homo sapian’s brain development, the lifestyle, tool technology etc. during our stone age. Just see the maps for palaeolithic and mesolithic major sites of India. Some important boxes I am covering because they provide extra information of topics mentioned in NCERT

    2. Chapter 1: Understanding Literary and Archaeological Sources

See, this chapter (46 pages) deals with our historical texts, foreign travelers’ accounts, basics of archaeological sources like inscriptions, coins…nothing else. From exam viewpoint, this chapter contains lots of works and their authors. It has detailed boxes about Harshcharita and Brahmi script… so here is just exam specific content of this chapter. Just mug it up or add it to your notes of NCERT.

    1. Introduction: Ideas of the Early Indian Past

See, this chapter (10 pages) is just an introduction chapter. Not quite relevant from UPSC viewpoint. But still, read just these things, which may be worthy for exam.
