Zandré is the director and producer of the new Afrikaans family fantasy Silas en die Ysbeer op Tafelberg, a beautifully imaginative story set against the mythology and landscape of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. The idea began with a difficult question: how do children make sense of death and loss when adults don’t always know how to talk about it? From that starting point came Droomland and a world filled with imagination, South African folklore and a polar bear on Table Mountain. Zandré and Charlenè talk about where that story came from, what it takes to carry an idea from imagination to screen, the realities behind directing and producing, and the moments when a filmmaker has to decide whether to stop or keep going. They also unpack Zandré’s journey through the South African film industry, including directing My F*k, Marelize!, and what success looks like when the audience only ever sees the finished film and not everything it took to get there.
