Darin Olien: Why Modern Comfort Can Quietly Weaken Us | Talks 21

How do modern conveniences and lifestyles shape our personal freedom and health? In this episode of Talks 21, I sit down with Darin Olien – producer of the documentary series A Road Map To Happiness, co-creator of the Netflix series Down to Earth with Zac Efron, systems thinker, and author of books focusing on superfoods, environmental health, and the hidden traps of modern life. We start with a question that runs through the whole conversation: what does it really mean to be happy, and how much of it is in our own hands? According to Darin, happiness is less a state of constant euphoria and more a sense of inner equanimity – cultivated through small daily choices, the strength of our community, and a sense of purpose. We also explore a paradox many of us live with today: the comforts we create as a reward for our work can, at some point, begin to weaken us.  Whether you are reflecting on what a good life means to you, sensing that something in modern comfort is off, or looking for a more grounded view on community, freedom, and contentment, this conversation offers a thoughtful place to start. In this episode, we discuss: 🔹 What, according to Darin, truly makes a human being happy. 🔹 Why the quality of our community may matter more for longevity than food or supplements. 🔹 How the conveniences of modern life can quietly turn against us. 🔹 Why stepping out of the comfort zone and meeting some pain belongs to a healthy life. 🔹 How personal sovereignty and a sense of purpose shape real contentment. 🔗 You can explore more of Darin’s work in his bestselling books SuperLife and Fatal Conveniences, or follow the updates regarding his upcoming project at www.roadtohappy.net. Daniel Pinchbeck: The Collapse of Civilization Is Our Greatest Opportunity | Talks 21

Is the collapse of civilization actually our greatest opportunity? In this episode of Talks 21, we sit down with Daniel Pinchbeck – writer, cultural critic, and systems thinker, whose work has shaped conversations about the future of humanity for over two decades. We dive deep into Daniel's vision of a world at a turning point – from the hidden mechanics of cognitive capitalism and the rise of AI, to the spiritual crisis of meaning in the modern world. Daniel explains why capitalism has reached its breaking point, how technology is reshaping the human mind, and why the coming collapse may not be the end we fear, but the beginning of something far greater. Whether you're drawn to the philosophy of consciousness, concerned about the direction of modern society, or searching for a vision of what could come next, this conversation offers a rare and grounded look at the forces shaping our shared future. In this episode, we discuss: 🔹 Why according to Daniel capitalism has reached its limit and what comes next. 🔹 How technology can either liberate us or take control of our minds. 🔹 Why so many people today feel like life has no meaning. 🔹 Why this crisis may be the beginning of something better. 🔹 The importance of initiation and why today's leaders are missing it. 🔗 You can explore more of Daniel's work in his books Breaking Open the Head, The Return of Quetzalcoatl, and How Soon Is Now?, or through the Liminal Institute, his platform for exploring consciousness and civilizational change: liminal.news.  Timestamps 0:00:00  Theme song 0:00:13  Introduction 0:01:07  Where Humanity Stands Today 0:04:38  The End of Materialism and the Return of Spirituality 0:11:53  Karel's Journey from Narrow to Expanded Rationality 0:15:58  What Kind of Future Awaits Us 0:20:45  How Do We Cultivate Ourselves Without Struggle 0:25:06  Facing the Collapse of Civilization 0:45:13  How to Communicate Across Divides 0:50:23  Do We Still Have a Chance 🔔 Subscribe to the channel and watch more interviews: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaJaxm7F1tK58bEnVoVliqg?sub_confirmation=1 Listen to the Talks 21 podcast also on: 🎧 Spotify → https://bit.ly/spotify-talks21 🎧 Apple Podcasts → https://apple.co/3VWWzwv 🌐 Official website of Karel Janeček: https://www.kareljanecek.com 📲 Follow Karel Janeček on social media: Instagram → https://www.instagram.com/karel252/ Facebook → https://www.facebook.com/kareljanecekcz 📩 Want to receive new episodes by email? Rick Doblin: Net Zero Trauma by 2070 | MDMA & Psychedelic Therapy

Can MDMA-assisted therapy solve the world’s most deep-seated conflicts? In this episode of Talks 21, we sit down with Rick Doblin, the visionary founder of MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies). Rick has spent over 40 years working tirelessly to transitionpsychedelics from counterculture to FDA-approved medicine. We dive deep into Rick’s personal journey – from his first encounters with LSD and the influence of Stan Grof, to his strategic battle against the DEA and the founding of MAPS in 1986. Rick candidly shares the mistakes made during the commercialisation of MDMA and his radical vision for "Net Zero Trauma" by 2070. Whether you are interested in the science of healing, the politics of drug reform, or the potential for psychedelics to foster peace in regions like Israel and Palestine, this conversation offers a profound look at the courage required to change the world. In this episode, we discuss: 🔹 The impact of the Holocaust and the Vietnam War on Rick’s mission. 🔹 The strategic shift from individual therapy to cultural and policy change. 🔹 The current status of the FDA approval for MDMA in the United States. 🔹 How to build bridges with those who think differently to find common ground. 🔹 Rick’s philosophy: focus on effort over outcome to build a lasting legacy. 🔗 You can support MAPS by sharing resources, joining upcoming events, or participating in their educational programs. About birth and life’s first lessons – Lilia Khousnoutdinova: O porodu a životních začátcích | Talks 21

👶 What does childbirth look like up close when we see it not only as a medical procedure, but as a life-shaping experience? The guest of this episode is my beloved wife Lilia Khousnoutdinova, a historian, political scientist, guide through rites of passage, and the founder of the Propolis 33 Foundation. In our conversation, we discussed why childbirth is not only about the arrival of a child but also an experience that shapes our relationship to life, safety, and trust. We also touched on topics that are often overlooked — mortality, conscious parenting, home births, and how the environment influences the course of childbirth. Lilia shared what works well in Czech obstetrics and where there is still room for improvement. I invite you to a conversation about why childbirth can be an empowering experience, why postnatal care is just as important as care during birth, and what we can all do to better support mothers. 🎬 This episode is also the final 12th episode of the first season of the Talks 21 podcast. After this episode, we are taking a short break before returning with more inspiring conversations from around the world. 🔗 More information about Lilia’s projects and the Propolis 33 Foundation can be found on her website: www.lilia.cz ===== 👶 Jak vypadá porod zblízka, když se na něj podíváte nejen jako na lékařský výkon, ale jako na životní zkušenost? 🔔 Subscribe to the channel and watch more interviews: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaJaxm7F1tK58bEnVoVliqg?sub_confirmation=1 Listen to the Talks 21 podcast also on: 🎧 Spotify → https://bit.ly/spotify-talks21 🎧 Apple Podcasts → https://apple.co/3VWWzwv 🌐 Official website of Karel Janeček: https://www.kareljanecek.com 📲 Follow Karel Janeček on social media: Instagram → https://www.instagram.com/karel252/ Facebook → https://www.facebook.com/kareljanecekcz 📩 Want to receive new episodes by email? About the risk that gives life meaning - Mára Holeček: O riziku, které dává životu smysl I Talks 21

⛰ Can you imagine climbing an eight-thousander without supplemental oxygen, without a support team, and with just one climbing partner by your side? For Mára Holeček—one of the most respected Czech mountaineers and a two-time recipient of the Piolet d’Or (Golden Ice Axe)—this is standard practice. I’m glad we had the chance to sit together on a rock and talk about his journey from a panel apartment block on a Prague housing estate to dozens of expeditions in the world’s great mountain ranges. Mára has completed more than 50 expeditions—from the Himalayas to Patagonia and Antarctica. Many of them were first ascents, meaning he ventured boldly into places no one had climbed before. I invite you to a conversation about the courage to live life fully. We talked about what risk means to him and how he works with it in an environment where mistakes are not forgiven. He also shared how preparation for eight-thousanders looks, how physical and mental resilience are built, and what his everyday life is like when he’s not in the mountains. We also touched on topics that go beyond climbing itself—such as why figures like the explorer Fernão de Magalhães inspire him, and how he thinks about freedom in today’s world. 🔗 More details about Mára’s journey toward the heights can be found on his website: www.marekholecek.cz Chapters 0:00:00 Intro 0:00:13 Introduction of the guest 0:01:56 The beginnings of his mountaineering journey 0:05:10 What climbing gives him and how he thinks about risk 0:14:10 What connects him with Fernão de Magalhães 0:17:56 When it makes sense to take risks—and when it’s better to step back 0:22:38 How he trains his mind to overcome obstacles in extreme conditions 0:31:58 Breathing through the preparation for a seven-thousander 0:44:28 What helps him handle media pressure and life in the spotlight 0:48:36 What a typical day looks like when he’s not in the mountains 0:50:57 How he reflects on the impermanence of life 0:54:35 How he perceives freedom and its role in today’s world ===== ⛰ Dovedete si představit vystoupat na osmitisícovku bez kyslíku, bez podpůrného týmu a jen s jedním parťákem po boku? 🔗 Další podrobnosti o Márově cestě do nebe najdete na jeho webu: www.marekholecek.cz  🔔 Subscribe to the channel and watch more interviews: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaJaxm7F1tK58bEnVoVliqg?sub_confirmation=1 Listen to the Talks 21 podcast also on: 🎧 Spotify → https://bit.ly/spotify-talks21 🎧 Apple Podcasts → https://apple.co/3VWWzwv 🌐 Official website of Karel Janeček: https://www.kareljanecek.com 📲 Follow Karel Janeček on social media: Instagram → https://www.instagram.com/karel252/ Facebook → https://www.facebook.com/kareljanecekcz 📩 Want to receive new episodes by email? 6. How to love your 'enemy' in the time of polarization? Christmas special I Talks 21

    12/21/2025

How to love your 'enemy' in the time of polarization? Christmas special I Talks 21

🎄 How can we slow down at Christmas in a time that constantly pushes us toward performance, opinions, and division? And is it possible to find a shared language even where seemingly very different paths meet? In this special Christmas episode of Talks 21, I invited two guests from different spiritual traditions to sit at the same table: Buddhist monk Bhikshu Sonam Lundrup (Jan Brázda) and Franciscan priest Father Šebestián. Not to compare beliefs or highlight differences, but to explore what remains when we set aside concepts, labels, and dogmas. We spoke about love as a state of mind without expectations, about self-denial and sacrifice as a path to freedom, about whether it is possible to love one’s enemy, and how not to lose ourselves in a divided society. We touched on silence, gratitude, inner peace, intuition, and ways of facing difficult life situations that cannot be avoided. This conversation is not a theological debate. It is an invitation to slow down, return to simplicity, and remember that the true light of Christmas does not arise from ideal conditions, but from our attitude toward ourselves and others. I wish you a peaceful listening experience and a beautiful Christmas season. Chapters: 0:00 Introduction 3:22 What love is and its relationship to self-denial and sacrifice 14:24 Is it possible to love your enemy 22:59 How to face a divided society 34:45 Why it is important not to run away from yourself 41:58 How to connect with inner peace 51:14 Why cultivating gratitude matters 1:02:33 How to listen to your inner voice and intuition 1:11:37 How to face difficult life situations and trials 1:27:34 Christmas wishes and advice on how to be happy during the holidays ======= 🎄 Jak o Vánocích zpomalit v době, která nás neustále tlačí k výkonu, názorům a rozdělení? Přeji vám klidný poslech a krásný vánoční čas. 🔔 Subscribe to the channel and watch more interviews: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaJaxm7F1tK58bEnVoVliqg?sub_confirmation=1 Listen to the Talks 21 podcast also on: 🎧 Spotify → https://bit.ly/spotify-talks21 🎧 Apple Podcasts → https://apple.co/3VWWzwv 🌐 Official website of Karel Janeček: https://www.kareljanecek.com 📲 Follow Karel Janeček on social media: Instagram → https://www.instagram.com/karel252/ Facebook → https://www.facebook.com/kareljanecekcz 📩 Want to receive new episodes by email? How to work with your voice to better understand yourself and others: Uria Tsur I Talks 21

🎵 What role can music play in a time full of rush, pressure, and mutual misunderstanding? And what happens when we pause for a moment and start to really listen to ourselves and others? In episode 9 of Talks 21, I invited Uria Tsur, a musician and teacher who works with singing as a path to greater presence and authenticity. In the interview, he shows that music is not just entertainment, but a natural part of human communication that can help us open up topics that are sometimes difficult to explain in words. We talked about what happens when a person sings without pressure to perform, and how this creates a state of flow in which our perception naturally changes. We also touched on the role of the mind—the moments when it helps us and when it unnecessarily holds us back. And we opened up the topic of negative emotions: why briefly accepting them can do more than suppressing them, and how music can offer a space to express them without being consumed by them. At the end of our conversation, a little surprise awaits you – Uri's unreleased song, which beautifully sums up everything we talked about together.  If you want to learn more about his work, music, or participate in one of his workshops yourself, you can find everything on his website: 🔗 www.uriatsur.com  Chapters 0:00:00 Theme song 0:00:13 Introduction 0:01:18 What music is and why it is not just entertainment 0:08:08 How flow is created and how to stay in it 0:12:43 How to respond to the pressures of today's society 0:23:15 What sadness and pain can teach us 0:30:38 When to push and when to let things be 0:37:30 How to overcome hatred between groups 0:46:07 Is it possible to achieve a true connection? 0:47:50 What Uri's work looks like in practice 0:50:19 Uri's song ===== 🎵 Jakou roli může mít hudba v době plné spěchu, tlaku a vzájemného neporozumění? Pokud se chcete dozvědět více o jeho práci, hudbě nebo se sami zúčastnit některého z jeho workshopů, vše najdete na jeho webu: 🔗 www.uriatsur.com  🔔 Subscribe to the channel and watch more interviews: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaJaxm7F1tK58bEnVoVliqg?sub_confirmation=1 Listen to the Talks 21 podcast also on: 🎧 Spotify → https://bit.ly/spotify-talks21 🎧 Apple Podcasts → https://apple.co/3VWWzwv 🌐 Official website of Karel Janeček: https://www.kareljanecek.com 📲 Follow Karel Janeček on social media: Instagram → https://www.instagram.com/karel252/ Facebook → https://www.facebook.com/kareljanecekcz 📩 Want to receive new episodes by email? Le Peutrec, Maio, Smejkal: How to bring humanity back to modern cities I Talks 21

🏙️ What determines how we feel in cities? And why do some places feel lively and natural, while others tend to tire us or separate us? In this episode of Talks 21, I invited three exceptional architects—Eva Le Peutrec, Marc Maio, and Karel Smejkal—to discuss the future of cities and the space we share in them.  We talked about cities that were designed for cars, not people. We discussed the role of light, proportions, and acoustics. We explored sacred geometry and the principles that can create harmony in space and within ourselves. We also touched on why ceiling height affects our thinking, what determines the quality of public space, and how nature can be a natural part of cities even in the 21st century. Please take a moment to pause and let yourself be inspired by a conversation that combines experience, intuition, and hope that our cities can be places of joy, encounter, and harmony. O roli světla, proporcí a akustiky. Každých 21 dní zve Karel Janeček k upřímné a otevřené konverzaci výjimečné osobnosti z různých oblastí – vědy, filozofie, vzdělávání, zdraví, technologií, spirituality a systémových změn. Every 21 days, Karel Janeček hosts open and honest conversations with outstanding guests from science, philosophy, education, health, technology, spirituality, and systemic transformation. Talks 21 is a space for depth, authenticity, and inspiration. We seek fresh perspectives, the courage to see things differently, and ideas that help us live lives that are authentic, meaningful, and free – for ourselves and for our children.
