#58- Stay Out of the Penalty Box: A Horse Show Judge's Guide to NRCHA & AQHA Ranch Classes with Jan Dublin

Ever walked out of the show pen, grabbed your scorecard, and thought "...okay, but what actually happened?" Same. This week we pull up a chair next to horse show judge Jan Dublin and break down how NRCHA and AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse classes get scored, so you can stay out of the penalty box. Jan got her first judge's card (NRHA) in 1998 and hasn't slowed down since. She now holds AQHA, NRCHA, and a long list of breed and stock horse association cards, and she judges a whole lot of ranch horse classes across the country from her home base in San Angelo, Texas. In this episode: How scoring works: everyone starts at 70, maneuvers run +1½ to -1½, and penalties land in specific spots on your cardCutting: why switching cows costs you 5 points, what correct working position looks like, and how back fence markers workReining: pattern placement, overspins, and how a missed lead change stacks up penalties fastCow work and box drive box: fence turns, corner markers, and the real reason you didn't get a new cowRanch trail and ranch riding: logs, lope departures, and why extended gaits shouldn't look like a horse raceOPs vs. DQs in ranch classes (and why your tail braids need to come out before you walk in)How to read your scorecard, and why you should actually go ask your judgeWhether you're heading to the NILE in Billings this October (Jan will be there!) or gearing up for your first ranch horse show, this one's worth a listen. #57- 2Rank 2Ride: Taming Mustangs, Egos, and Everything In Between with John Silva

This week we sit down with John Silva of 2Rank 2Ride — a 30-year professional bulldogger turned Mustang trainer out of Wyoming who's built a whole brand (and a wildly entertaining TikTok following) out of taking wild BLM Mustangs and turning them into tough, versatile using horses. We start with the horses — the painful learning curve of switching from rodeo horses to Mustangs, why John would rather over-reward good behavior than correct bad, and the origin story behind the name 2Rank 2Ride (it involves a wood stove, coffee, and Baileys). But the conversation doesn't stay in the round pen for long. What starts as horse talk turns into something bigger: taming egos, building the right circle, and the humility it takes to actually change. John gets honest about who he used to be, why "listen to your dad" is advice nobody takes soon enough, and why the same patience it takes to earn a Mustang's trust is the patience it takes to earn your own growth.  Genuine, unfiltered, and a little dry — 2Rank 2Ride style. #56- You Don't Have to be Qualified: A Cowboy's Call to Ministry with Dave Shumpert

Dave Shumpert used to run cattle and horses from Colorado to the Canadian border — until a broken irrigation pipe, a bad mood, and one honest question to God changed the entire direction of his life. Today he leads X2D Ranch Ministries out of Ault, Colorado, feeding families in crisis through a herd God built and meeting horse people — literally — on both sides of the cattle guard. This week on Horses Hope & Hustle, Dave gets real about identity, burnout, and what happens when the thing you built becomes the thing you worship. We get into a genuine conversation on leading people to God simply by being people of God — no polish, no script, just real talk about faith, ranching, and the ripple effect of showing up for people. 🔗 Full episode + directory: horseshopeandhustle.com  📍 Learn more about X2D Ranch Ministries: https://x2dranchministries.com/ List Your Business Free--> https://horseshopeandhustle.com/directory/ Support the show Whether you found us by accident or on purpose (bonus points if you did), we're glad you're here. #55 The Cost of a Wonderful Life- Solo Reflection

Six words from a past guest just rearranged my whole brain, and I couldn't NOT make an episode about it. Charlotte Volt said something so simple during our anniversary recap that I haven't stopped thinking about since: "That is the cost of a wonderful life." In this solo episode, I'm unpacking what that means — for business, for relationships, for the messy, expensive, worth-it life you're building. I get real about my own darkest season, the years I spent rebuilding alone, and how every hard thing I paid for back then paid the price for the life I have now. If you're in a season that feels like it's costing you everything, this one's for you. You might be one "no" away from the wonderful life you're working toward. Stay true, stay tough, and keep hustling. #54 One Year Later: Two Businesses, Two Totally Different Bets with Charolette Volt

One year ago, Charlotte Vault of Colorado Horse Sale was Crystal's very first podcast guest. A lot has changed since then — for both of them. In this one-year recap, Crystal and Charlotte get real about the completely different directions their businesses took over the last twelve months. Charlotte doubled down, adding vet requirements and radiograph sessions to elevate Colorado Horse Sale into a more selective, reputable sale — even when it meant fewer consignments and a serious "slice of humble pie." Crystal went the opposite way, selling her company, Big Sky Horse Sales, to go all-in on Horses Hope & Hustle. They talk through burnout (including Charlotte's naturopath visit and the physical toll of chronic stress), how to take feedback without taking it personally, why quality over quantity is worth the growing pains, and why collaboration — not competition — has been the real secret to both of their businesses surviving the hard years. This one is big sister business advice through and through: honest, unfiltered, and for anyone building something that isn't going the way they expected. In this episode: Why Charlotte added vet exams and video requirements to every horse at Colorado Horse SaleThe moment Crystal knew it was time to sell Big Sky Horse SalesHow both women handled burnout and physical stress from running high-pressure businessesWhy being selective in business is harder than it sounds — and worth itThe power of collaboration over competition in the horse industryWhat they'd tell their younger selves about identity, stress, and successFollow Colorado Horse Sale: ColoradoHorseSale.com | @ColoradoHorseSale Follow Horses Hope & Hustle: horseshopeandhustle.com | @horseshopeandhustle List Your Business Free--> https://horseshopeandhustle.com/directory/ Support the show Whether you found us by accident or on purpose (bonus points if you did), we're glad you're here. #53 It's Impossible to Fail If You Keep Showing Up- Horse Training Long Game with Trevor & Kaylie Haught

There's no shortcut to building a horse training business that lasts — and Trevor and Kaylie Haught of Haught Horses and Livestock in Scottsdale, Arizona are proof of it. In this episode, Trevor and Kaylie get real about the decade it actually took to get here: quitting a steady paycheck to ride colts for twelve bucks a ride, living in a fifth wheel with no shade in 120-degree heat, and learning the hard way that talent alone doesn't build a full barn — relationships do. We talk about the growing pains nobody warns you about (employees, getting paid, running the business side of a horse business), the moment a near-disaster at a sale in Big Sky turned into one of their most important client relationships, and why they train every horse for who he actually is instead of who they wish he was. If you've ever wondered whether doing the right thing consistently actually pays off — even when it feels painfully slow — this conversation is your answer. In this episode: Why customer service, not talent, has carried their whole programThe growing pains of hiring, getting paid, and running a horse businessThe Big Sky sale story that changed everythingTraining the horse in front of you instead of the one you wish you hadTheir advice for anyone starting out: keep learning, keep showing upFollow Trevor and Kaylie at Haught Horses and Livestock on Instagram and Facebook List Your Business Free--> https://horseshopeandhustle.com/directory/ Support the show Whether you found us by accident or on purpose (bonus points if you did), we're glad you're here. #52- Building a Legacy: Mariah & Johnny Jerviss on Marriage, Horses & Betting on Yourself

On this episode of Horses, Hope & Hustle, host Crystal Show sits down with Mariah and Johnny Jerviss of Legacy Horse Company — a husband-and-wife team who've built one of the most recognizable young-horse programs in the industry. Mariah and Johnny share how their love story started at a birthday party in California, how "Legacy" became more than just a business name, and the moment they packed up everything they owned — including a one-year-old son — and moved to Wyoming with nothing but a leap of faith and a maxed-out credit card to buy their first horses. They open up about the early struggles of building a brand from scratch, learning to market horses honestly instead of with "flourish," why they shifted their focus to yearlings and two-year-olds, and how simplifying their feed program changed their horses' health for good. Mariah and Johnny also get real about what it's actually like running a business — and raising a family — with your spouse: the fights, the growth, and why respect and quick apologies matter more than winning the argument. Whether you're dreaming of starting your own horse business, married to your business partner, or just need a reminder that the struggle is part of the story — this episode is packed with hard-earned wisdom from two people who bet everything on their dream and made it work. #51- Surrendered: Olivia Allen on Surviving an Eating Disorder and Finding Her Purpose in Horses

In this episode of Horses, Hope & Hustle, we sit down with Olivia Allen — wife, mom, and reining horse trainer out of Oklahoma — for one of the most honest conversations we've had on the podcast. Olivia opens up about growing up without the means to afford nice horses, working her way up cleaning stalls and riding other people's colts, and eventually building her own reining horse program from literally a gutted chicken coop. But behind the hustle was a private battle with an eating disorder that started in high school and spiraled during a season of isolation, anxiety, and a global pandemic — a battle she candidly shares brought her to her lowest point. Olivia shares how a simple question to her now-husband on a drive home from church — "Do you think I'm good?" — led to her baptism that same night, and how surrendering her life to the Lord became the turning point that carried her out of years of struggle. She's now been free from her eating disorder for nearly five years, and shares openly about rebuilding her faith, her marriage, and a training program that's grown from a backyard round pen to a full-scale facility — all while raising her daughter alongside her husband in the barn. This episode is a raw, faith-filled reminder that no one is too far gone, no one is alone, and God can take a shell of a person and do more than she ever imagined. Content note: This episode includes an open discussion of disordered eating and suicidal thoughts. If you or someone you know is struggling, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available by call or text, anytime.
