Scaling, Work/Life Balance, & Passive Income

“The key to success is when culture is just part of the dialogue,” explains guest Carrie Cahill, Executive Coach at Fortune Management. Today, host Jon engages in conversation with his Fortune Management colleagues Sam Douthit, Jocelyn Jefferies, and Carrie Cahill about various topics from work-life balance to scaling to passive income. Although running an office is never easy, their valuable insights make expanding your practice much more possible.    Jon and the guests discuss how to scale a business effectively. While many dentists want to expand into multiple locations, it’s essential to have a clear vision of achieving this. By prioritizing workplace culture, diversifying your investments, and paying attention to every facet of your organization, you will set yourself up for success.   To grow your practice, you must be prepared to work. Learn more about the importance of training, perfecting your order of operations, and why you should always offer your employees health insurance.   Quotes • “The key to success is when your culture is part of your dialogue.” (8:32-8:39 | Carrie) • “The bigger your organization grows, you have to carve out time for thinking about your business. And then you have to carve out time for training and developing, and how to take it to the next level.” (20:30-20:43 | Carrie)  • “In the dental industry, just having health insurance itself will offset the cost of your employees having to pay for all of that themselves.”  (53:32-53:43 | Jocelyn) • “I think the bonus program we propose is great because it makes people make more money for working harder. And that's the key. If the practice grows, the staff makes more money, and everybody's happy.” (1:03:07-1:03:29 | Jocelyn) • “I'm in the national market, and the appreciation has gone through the roof. And I don't necessarily see this market going down. If you look at real estate over the last 30 years, it's gone up, so you can just buy.” (1:13:57-1:14:14 | Sam)   Links https://www.fortunemgmt.com  https://www.facebook.com/jon.harris.39545  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtmidsouth  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtgeorgia  https://www.instagram.com/jonharris_/  Instagram: @realdentalpodcast   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Practice Values, Profitability, and Adding Associates

“It’s not the equipment's fault that you're not more profitable on it. It's your fault because you're not delegating what needs to be delegated,” explains host Jon Harris. Today, Jon engages in an informative conversation with his colleagues Ragan Hartman and Jocelyn Jefferies. Together, they discuss the profitability of running a dental practice and the various elements involved. Jon and the guests discuss the different facets of running a successful dental practice. Hiring staff, managing your team, and serving patients are all part of running a practice. However, if you jump too quickly to add more staff or purchase costly equipment that only depreciates, you may struggle to keep your practice afloat. By walking through all the costs and services required in the dental industry, Jon and the guests give valuable insight into meeting your business's demand while earning a profit. Tune into this week’s episode of the Real Dental Podcast for a dynamic conversation on managing a dental practice. Learn more about dental practice valuations, the importance of delegating responsibilities, and determining the right time to hire more associates.   Quotes • “I think one thing about the way we do it is we're very objective. And I think if you've got an accountant or a financial planner doing it for their customer, they're going to lean more on their side.” (8:46 - 8:57 │Jocelyn Jefferies) • “It’s not the equipment's fault that you're not more profitable on it. It's your fault because you're not delegating what needs to be delegated.” [Jon] (17:00-17:06│Jon Harris) • “What are you willing to invest in your downtime to get the whole workflow mastered?” (20:43 - 20:48 │Ragan Hartman) • “When you're running a business, you have to look at it from all of these varying angles to see what is in the best interest of the whole.”  (22:02- 22:10│Ragan Hartman) • “If you have all of these patients that you’re not keeping active, then eventually the well runs dry.” (45:43 - 45:51 │ Ragan Hartman) • “Focus on retention, making your people happy, and keeping them as long as you can.” (57:57 - 58:01│Ragan Hartman)   Links https://www.fortunemgmt.com  https://www.facebook.com/jon.harris.39545  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtmidsouth  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtgeorgia  https://www.instagram.com/jonharris_/  Instagram: @realdentalpodcast   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

    Relationships Are a Tricky Business

Host Jon Harris engages in a dynamic conversation with his colleagues from the Mid South branch of Fortune Management, Carrie Cahill and Jocelyn Jeffries. Together, they discuss how ego affects communication, our varying discomfort thresholds, and the concept of vulnerability. The guests expand on these issues to better understand effective communication strategies, primarily in relationships. The guests dive deep into why relationships between men and women can be difficult. By dissecting a recent argument Jon had with his wife, Carrie and Jocelyn give valuable insight into how men can emote with higher emotional intelligence. By paying attention to tone and body language and showing a willingness to be vulnerable, men can show women they care and are willing to grow within their relationships. Tune into this week’s episode of the Real Dental Podcast for an insightful conversation on communicating with women. Learn more about the purpose of tonality, how to build our emotional muscles, and how to make your loved ones feel like a priority even when life gets busy.   Quotes • “We tend to assume things are operating at our threshold of discomfort, but our personal discomfort doesn't match somebody else's. Theirs might be lower or higher. They label things differently. They filter that information differently.” (13:21 - 13:36 | Carrie) • “Tonality has a purpose. The purpose is to let the other person know whether the emotion or the intention behind the words is positive or negative.” (15:55 - 16:05 | Jon) • “The tonality is a lot more important than words. Words are 7%, tonality is 36% or something, and your body language is the most. So, the wording that you use is the least important part, which is why you have to bring emotion into it.” (35:59 - 36:20 | Jocelyn) • “If you're going to prioritize the relationship, that means you have to look for that place to say, ‘Oh, I've got a 10-minute break, want to go out for a walk?’ Or, ‘I’ve got a 10-minute break, want to grab a coffee?” Or whatever it is that you can just spend that quality time with that person, which shows that person that they're the biggest priority.” (52:37 - 52:59 | Carrie)   Links https://www.fortunemgmt.com  https://www.facebook.com/jon.harris.39545  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtmidsouth  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtgeorgia  https://www.instagram.com/jonharris_/  Instagram: @realdentalpodcast   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

    Becoming a Masterful Coach

In today’s Real Dental Podcast episode, host Jon Harris engages in a lively conversation with his colleagues from the Mid South branch of Fortune Management, Carrie Cahill and Jocelyn Jeffries. They discuss how to effectively teach doctors to implement communication tools, how to connect with specific audiences, and the benefits of team receptiveness.  Carrie Cahill dives into doctors’ willingness to learn team dynamics and basic coaching structures. She explains that during her time as an executive coach, she has come across many doctors who are unwilling to change their ways and improve their communication skills. Carrie delves into why doctors are so hesitant for change and offers reasoning for why being trained as a life coach is beneficial to the overall structure of your practice.  Jocelyn and Carrie disclose their go-to questions to ask before taking on a doctor as a client. It is extremely important for a doctor to want to change their communication and listening patterns before hiring an executive life coach. Carrie shares her favorite question to ask any client: Do you want to change? Jocelyn explains how she always sets the pre framework for a doctor before diving into the coaching aspect of her job.  Tune into this week's episode of the Real Dental Podcast with guests Carrie Cahill and Jocelyn Jeffries to find out how to become a masterful coach. Learn more about asking powerful questions, accepting change, and getting curious about others’ opinions.    Quotes • “I think part of it is the doctor’s willingness and ability to coach when we're not present. So their level of the team’s receptiveness, their ability to translate it into the day-to-day, that falls on the doctor. So, if the doctor is not able to do that and actually become a coach in real life, then it is a natural disconnection of the team.” (07:46-08:20 | Carrie)  • “It's with communication that doctors are refusing to make the shift with themselves.” (09:48-09:55 | Carrie)  • “I mean, we can change and should change our approach based on the team. But at the end of the day, it comes down to the doctor.” (10:27-10:36 | Carrie)  • “Coaching is about taking the time to get to know people and figuring out if they are reachable.” (23:01-23:07 | Jocelyn)  • “We coach our doctors on how to choose their patients, how to bring the patients in that they want coming into their practice. And sometimes we kind of need to do that as coaches too.” (37:27-37:41 | Jocelyn)  • “I really think that the true strength and a sign of a good coach is always asking really good questions.” (43:40-43:50 | Carrie)  • “As long as we are coming from a good place and from the right place, then we don't ever have to walk away and say, ‘I did something wrong.’” (47:50-48:02 | Jocelyn)  • “If you have a team that's struggling with trust, pick the ones that trust you least and sit down and have a conversation with them.” (1:20:04-1:20:12 | Carrie)    Links https://www.fortunemgmt.com  https://www.facebook.com/jon.harris.39545  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtmidsouth  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtgeorgia  https://www.instagram.com/jonharris_/  Instagram: @realdentalpodcast   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Practice Valuations, Inflation & the Talent Pool

Host Jon Harris engages in a lively conversation with his colleagues from the Mid South branch of Fortune Management: Ragan Hartman, Carrie Cahill, Jocelyn Jeffries and Sam Douthit. They discuss practice valuations, inflation, and the talent pool of dentistry. The guests expand on the issues they have encountered with their clients when it comes to implementing systems and strategies, and the overall cultural problems they have with companies and individuals in the dental space.  The guests dive deep into the changing job market in dentistry. Some dental practices are stuck on the mentality that $14/hour for an entry level position will attract quality talent. Ragan argues that if dental practices want to retain quality employees, they must offer a competitive wage which has risen to about $22-25/hour. Jocelyn warns doctors that they need to be cautious of who they are hiring, especially with an hourly wage of $14/hour, because these candidates may not be a good fit for their business. All four guests encourage doctors to take advantage of executive coaches to pin down quality talent that will thrive within their practice culture.  Tune into this week's episode of the Real Dental Podcast with guests Ragan Hartman, Carrie Cahill, Jocelyn Jeffries and Sam Douthit to glean some insight into various cultural problems in the dental space. Learn more about how COVID affected different kinds of dental practices, the comparison between dentistry and the real estate market, and why different valuation models matter.    Quotes • “The asset based approach is an interesting scenario that I really hadn't considered because I guess most of the equipment in there is very new, even though the practice is aging.” (0:11:50-0:12:00 | Carrie) • “What we know is that location doesn't matter a whole lot when it comes to the potential of that practice. Whether you're in Podunk Tennessee, Podunk North Carolina, or a major Metro City, the levers to pull to create sustainable and year-over-year growth, they're consistent, but not every practice knows how to pull them.” (0:15:58-0:16:24 | Ragan)  • “Dentistry is just like the retail market where you go to Walmart because you want to be able to buy clothes, Tupperware, and food at the same time. Whereas people go to Food City or whatever the local grocery store might be in your area because they want that certain thing and those specialty items. And it's the same thing with the dentist's office. You're gonna have different people wanting different things. Dentists have to change in order to adapt to the times and to what's happening and to what their patients want.” (0:42:25-0:43:06 | Jocelyn)  • “But the thing is, it's a reality, we're going to have to face the fact that the job market has changed. And $14 an hour for an entry level position is not going to attract quality talent.” (0:48:38-0:48:50 | Ragan)  • “Prioritization of my time is probably the biggest challenge for me.” (0:56:47-0:56:53 | Sam)    Links https://www.fortunemgmt.com  https://www.facebook.com/jon.harris.39545  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtmidsouth  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtgeorgia  https://www.instagram.com/jonharris_/  Instagram: @realdentalpodcast   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

What Patients Want & The Problem with Technology

In the premiere episode of the Real Dental Podcast, host Jon Harris engages in a lively and topical discussion with guests Ragan Hartman and Carrie Cahill about what being a consumer of healthcare really means. Big insurance companies affect small practices more than patients might think, and dentists Ragan and Carrie are here to take the blame off of the dental practices and turn it on to the insurance companies.  Ragan and Carrie share their passion for conspiracy theories and apply it to the topic of insurance companies. They each share their own take on an insurance conspiracy theory and discuss the harm that insurance companies are not only doing to dental practices, but most importantly to their patients.  Jon, Carrie and Ragan also dive deep into the topic of technology and the importance of practicing self control with your cell phones, how to control technology urges, and admit to their own cell phone addictions.  Tune into the premiere episode of the Real Dental Podcast to get the inside scoop on big-wig insurance companies, technology’s effect on avid phone users, and some interesting conspiracy theory ideas.    Quotes • “We need to become better advocates and better medical health care consumers.” (21:55-21:59 | Carrie Cahill)  • “There is nobody out there freaking teaching people how to be better consumers of their healthcare.” (22:15- 22:20 | Carrie Cahill)  • “Insurance is really just a discount program.” (30:37-30:40 | Carrie Cahill)  • “The problem that is happening right now is that the consumer is being diluted into believing that insurance is out for their best interest when it's not!” (31:07-31:24 | Carrie Cahill) • “Insurance companies make dental practices the middle man to do their bidding and argue with the patient over what they need while the insurance companies are all hands off in the background. And the dental practice becomes the bad guy.” (36:20-36:44 | Ragan Hartman)  • “Not everybody has to make a choice the same way.” (48:50-48:52 | Carrie Cahill)  • “The news is someone saying, ‘we need to get you upset and angry so you don't know what is going on behind the smoke screen.’” (1:02:11-1:02:14 | Ragan Hartman)    Links https://www.fortunemgmt.com  https://www.facebook.com/jon.harris.39545  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtmidsouth  https://www.facebook.com/fortunemgmtgeorgia  https://www.instagram.com/jonharris_/  Instagram: @realdentalpodcast   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
