    We’ve built an entire life around performing — and mistaking that performance for who we are. Every hierarchy runs on judgment: a boss above you deciding if you performed well enough to keep your place. School, work, parenting, marriage, sleep, weight, divorce — deviate from any of them and the response is always the same: something is wrong with you, and here’s the therapy, the medication, the class that will put you back in line. The people offering the fix aren’t villains. They went through the same system, learned the same standard, and genuinely believe they’re helping — which is exactly what makes it so hard to see. We watch cult documentaries and judge the members for not seeing what’s obvious from the outside. But step back far enough and the same pattern shows up everywhere: school, marriage, checkups that only look for what’s wrong, jobs we stay in because bills exist. None of it gets questioned, because it doesn’t look like a cult from inside — it looks like life. Step outside far enough, and there’s no floor left to stand on. That’s the point.     Somewhere along the way, we were taught to pray outward — to ask, to beg, to wait for guidance from somewhere else. What if that was never faith at all? Sarah recognized the pattern from her own narcissistic relationship: he didn’t want her remembering who she was before him, because a memory of her own strength meant she could leave. She sees the same design running underneath this reality — a memory erased on purpose, so that no one remembers they’re powerful enough to walk out. There’s no hierarchy where you came from.
