    The pendulum swings back! After a matchday full of surprises, European football delivered another round of dramatic results, statement wins, and reality checks across the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.⚫️⚪🔴 LASK strike back in Lisbon! After the painful 3–6 defeat against Liverpool, LASK produced a brilliant performance to beat Sporting 3–2 away from home. It was a deserved victory built on aggressive pressing, tactical discipline, and a tremendous team effort — continuing LASK's remarkable history against Sporting in Lisbon.🔵🔴 A Pyrrhic victory for PSG? Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4–2 in another spectacular encounter, confirming their strength after defeating Manchester City the previous week. But injuries to key players threaten to overshadow the result.🇮🇹 Is Italian football back? After all four Italian Champions League teams lost last week, the pendulum swung in the other direction. But with mixed results across Europe, is this really a turnaround — or are we reading too much into one matchday?🍒 Bournemouth embarrass Milan!     Ep. 103: Goals, Upsets & Reality Checks | UEFA Competitions Matchday 2

    European football delivered a spectacular week of goals, upsets and reality checks! From PSG's statement victory over Manchester City to a disastrous Champions League week for Italian clubs and a brutal reminder of the gap between Austrian football and Europe's elite, there was plenty to discuss.I start with PSG's impressive 4–2 win over Manchester City and the wider questions surrounding City's financial case, before looking at the biggest stories from the Champions League. Inter's home defeat to Club Brugge, Bayern's extraordinary draw with Viking and Bodø/Glimt's deserved victory over Borussia Dortmund all showed that the established hierarchy can be challenged.For Austrian football, however, the week was considerably less encouraging. LASK lost 3–6 to Liverpool, Salzburg were beaten 4–0 by Milan, and Sturm Graz suffered a 3–0 defeat against Bournemouth. There were moments of resistance, particularly from LASK, but the gap in quality was difficult to ignore.Thursday brought a different picture. Milan and Juventus helped Italian football recover some pride in the Europa League, while Atalanta won in the Conference League.     Ep. 102: Goodbyes & Green Shoots | Nations League MD4 Review

    The Nations League is beginning to reveal where European international football is heading — and there are plenty of signs of change.This episode starts with two very different farewells. Lionel Messi has seemingly chosen the right moment to step away from international football, while Cristiano Ronaldo's future with Portugal remains wrapped in uncertainty. Two all-time greats, two very different personalities, and two very different ways of approaching the end.Then it's back to the Nations League, where Spain, Portugal and England continue to look strong, France recover spectacularly against Belgium, and Italy are beginning to show some genuine green shoots after a difficult period. Germany are also showing encouraging signs, while Greece are proving that they may be more than just outsiders.I also run through Leagues B, C and D, including Switzerland's control of their group, Sweden's resurgence, Bosnia's challenge, Scotland's struggles and Austria's continued control of their group — despite another unconvincing performance.Finally, I step back from the results and look at the bigger issue surrounding international football: the calendar. The problem isn't necessarily that international breaks are too long. It's that too many competitive games are being squeezed into too little time. With another international break upon us, I take a step back from the club game and make the case for why international football still matters — and why the UEFA Nations League could become one of the most important competitions in European football.I look at why international football can feel disruptive to the club season, but also why national teams provide something the club game simply cannot: a connection to countries, new football cultures and teams we might otherwise never watch.Then it's time for the 2026/27 Nations League.     Ep. 97: This Competition Deserves Better! 26-27 UEL Matchday 1 Review

    The Europa League is back — and Matchday 1 gave us plenty of reasons to be excited about this competition. There were big wins, surprising results, strong performances from the Premier League clubs and plenty of goals. But there was also a reminder of one of the problems I discussed in my Europa League preview: not every club seems to be treating the competition with the same ambition.The biggest disappointment for me was Milan’s 0–2 home defeat to Benfica. With two of the biggest names in the competition meeting at San Siro, Benfica rotated heavily ahead of their clash with Porto, while Milan struggled to impose themselves and produced a performance that was particularly frustrating from a Rossoneri perspective.Juventus, meanwhile, showed a very different approach with a 5–0 win over NEC, while Bournemouth made an impressive European debut by winning at Real Sociedad. Crystal Palace and Sunderland also started with victories, and there were plenty of other stories across the competition.I also take a look at the Austrian teams, Sparta Praha, some of the biggest surprises of the opening round, the current standings and how Matchday 1 has affected my expectations for the rest of the league phase.Because the Europa League doesn't lack good football.
