    Ep. 96: UEFA, We Have a Problem: The 2026/27 Europa League Preview

    The 2026/27 UEFA Europa League is about to begin — and on paper, it is actually a pretty impressive competition. Milan, Juventus, Benfica, Bayer Leverkusen, Lyon, Marseille, Real Sociedad and plenty of ambitious clubs are all in the field.So why does it feel like the Europa League is getting so little attention?In this episode of My Soccer Universe: Football Talk, I look beyond the usual preview and ask what has happened to the value and identity of the Europa League. I briefly look back at the qualification rounds and the remarkable collapse of Red Star Belgrade against Viktoria Plzeň before examining how the competition has gradually lost some of its appeal.I identify three major problems: the growing separation between UEFA's three club competitions, the Europa League's almost permanent association with Thursday nights, and the relatively small financial gap between the Europa League and Conference League.I also propose a possible solution: bringing back a drop-down system between the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, giving clubs a second European life rather than simply eliminating them after the league phase.Finally, I look at the 2026/27 Europa League field, make my first projections for the season and pick out some of the matches I'm most looking forward to — including some fascinating clashes between historic giants and clubs whose current financial strength tells a very different story.The Europa League doesn't need to become the Champions League.     Ep. 95: The Champions League is More Interesting Than You Think! | UCL Matchday 1 Review

    Champions League Matchday 1 is in the books — and rather than recap every result, let's look at what the first three days actually told us.The big teams mostly did what we expected, with some spectacular scorelines and individual performances. But the more I watched, the more I felt that the most entertaining games were often happening away from the biggest names.Lille vs Real Betis, Slavia Prague vs Lens and other closely matched games provided the kind of unpredictability and drama that makes Champions League football so much fun. Even some of the marquee matchups — including Real Madrid vs Inter, Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid and Arsenal vs Napoli — showed that competitive balance can matter more than the names on the teamsheet.We also look at Como's spectacular 4–1 Champions League debut against RB Leipzig and ask whether they could become this season's surprise package.And then there's LASK. After qualifying for the Champions League league phase for the first time, their opening 0–1 defeat to AEK Athens offered a very different perspective: what does it actually take to compete at this level?
