EP 32 - My Dad’s Journey Through Alcoholism and Recovery

In this episode, I sit down with my dad to have an honest, unfiltered conversation about his life with alcoholism and the journey toward recovery. We walk through the early stages that often go unnoticed: drinking like anyone else, unaware that it’s becoming a problem. Slowly, almost quietly, the habit grows until the mind begins to revolve around one thing. What starts as normal becomes necessary. What feels controlled becomes consuming. From there comes denial: the refusal to acknowledge or recognize that anything is wrong. We talk about how powerful denial can be, and how convincing the mind becomes when it’s protecting a pattern that’s hurting you. Eventually, denial gives way to rock bottom. For my dad, that meant crashing two cars, ending up in the hospital, and facing the sickness of addiction at its most intense. It was the moment when avoidance was no longer possible. Real change, he explains, only begins with acceptance, fully recognizing that you have a problem, and then making the conscious decision to want something different. ] We discuss the many paths people take toward recovery: religion, spirituality, therapy, and support systems. For him, it was Alcoholics Anonymous. He committed to the program, followed the steps for 30 consecutive days, and began to truly understand himself. Through that process, he realized he has an addictive personality and that his mind isn’t always his best friend. We talk about how the mind can play games, sabotage progress, and pull us back toward familiar patterns. But with awareness, discipline, and support, we can learn how to put the mind in its place instead of letting it run our lives. This episode is about accountability, presence, and choosing intention over escape. It’s not just a story about alcoholism, it’s about learning how to stay, how to face yourself honestly, and how change becomes possible when you finally decide to show up.

@nicoledesmoineaux https://www.nicoledesmoineaux.com/
