Maxim EQ

Mike Baumer and Sam Wahl

At a time when the profound is too often reduced to cheap memes and goofy bumper stickers Maxim EQ heads in the opposite direction—digging deeper to examine the commonalities and differences in our perceptions around a particular adage. In each episode we’ll discuss our guests’ take on a thought provoking phrase or maxim that encourages self-reflection and personal growth—for us, but hopefully for you as well. If you’re looking for a podcast that blends philosophy, psychology, and everyday wisdom into engaging conversations, Maxim EQ is the perfect companion for your commute, workout, or daily walk.

We Live to Survive Our Paradoxes

“We Live to Survive Our Paradoxes” takes a line from The Tragically Hip and asks what it might mean to live with the contradictions that are an unavoidable part of being human. Sam and I are joined but our guest for this episode, Mark Evanoff to explore the tension between freedom and security, independence and belonging, optimism and reality, and whether maturity is less about resolving those contradictions than learning to hold them at the same time. Mark, an educator and school counselor, brings a particularly relevant perspective from his work with students navigating anxiety, discomfort, and increasingly complicated environments. The conversation moves into resilience, the value of discomfort, and the importance of giving young people tools to manage difficult circumstances rather than simply trying to protect them from those circumstances. Along the way, we consider the difference between lowering expectations and managing them, and how a small pause between stimulus and response can create an opportunity for agency. Ultimately, the conversation seems to suggests that perhaps we aren't meant to conquer our paradoxes at all. Maybe the challenge (and the opportunity) is learning to live with uncertainty, complexity, and competing truths without allowing them to paralyze us. From counseling to curiosity, and even the unexpected beauty of “crown shyness,” this episode wanders through some interesting territory while returning to a simple question: What if surviving our paradoxes means learning to make room for them? As always… thanks for tuning in! Mike and Sam  Share your feedback

Live Each Day as Though it’s Your Last, and Eventually it Will Be. Live Each Day as Though it’s Your First, and Eventually it Will Be

What does it actually mean to live each day as though it were your last? And what changes when we flip the idea around and try to live each day as though it were our first? Our guest Matt Goldman joins us to unpack a maxim he brought to the conversation: “Live each day as though it’s your last, and eventually it will be. Live each day as though it’s your first, and eventually it will be.” This episode explores the tension between urgency and wonder, and why the two approaches may be more powerful together than either is on its own. Matt shares how a lifelong practice of mindfulness, meditation, and curiosity shaped his perspective, and how becoming a father has given him a renewed ability to experience ordinary moments through a more innocent lens. From fear and gratitude to parenting, aging, and the ways we respond to uncertainty, the conversation asks what happens when we stop treating every moment as something to control and instead become more present to what is actually happening. The discussion eventually extends into Matt’s work with artificial intelligence, where the same principle applies: rather than approaching something unfamiliar with fear or rigid certainty, perhaps curiosity gives us a better way forward. In a world changing faster than our opinions can keep up, making the most of what makes us uniquely human may matter more than having all the answers. We hope you enjoy this conversation about mindfulness, curiosity, gratitude, and the possibility that sometimes seeing something for the first time is the best way to truly see it at all.
