Muscle Confusion vs Structure: What Actually Works?

There’s no shortage of advice in the fitness industry. Some people tell you to “confuse the muscle.” Others insist you need a perfectly structured programme planned months in advance. So which approach actually gets results? In this episode of Beast of Burden, I break down one of the biggest questions in strength training: does variety build better results, or does structure win? After coaching hundreds of busy professionals, I’ve found that the answer isn’t as simple as choosing one side. We explore why beginners can make progress on almost any programme, why consistency beats perfection, and why the best training plans combine structured progression with just enough variety to keep you engaged and improving. In this episode, I cover: • Why almost every programme works… for a while • The what is “muscle confusion”? • What helps you get long term results • The movement qualities we prioritise at Hounds of Health • How to balance progression with variety • Why skill development matters more than constantly changing exercises • How busy professionals can make consistent progress without living in the gym The biggest mistake isn’t choosing the wrong programme. It’s never sticking with one long enough to let it work. At Hounds of Health, we help busy professionals in Wandsworth and Putney build strength, improve body composition and create sustainable habits through structured coaching, nutrition and accountability. Stop Training Like You’re 25

Stop mourning the person you used to be at 25. That younger version of you might have been fitter, leaner, faster or stronger. But they also had a completely different life. They probably had more time, fewer responsibilities, less stress, no kids, no demanding career, no mortgage, and more freedom to train whenever they wanted. In this episode of Beast of Burden, I talk about why so many busy adults get stuck comparing themselves to the person they used to be. “I used to be fit.” “I used to run.” “I used to lift heavy.” “I used to play sport.” “I used to be able to train all the time.” That may be true, but it may no longer be useful. The system that worked when you were younger may not work now. Not because you are finished, but because your life has changed. If you are over 40, with a career, family, travel, stress and responsibilities, you need a different approach. You need a system that fits the life you actually have, not the life you had 20 years ago. I talk about why twice-a-week strength training can be enough when it is done properly, why trying to go from zero to five sessions a week usually fails, and why stacking habits slowly often beats trying to change everything at once. The key point is this: you do not need to go back to who you were. You need to build the version of you that works now. Stop Questioning Your Progress: The Truth About Results

At some point in your fitness journey, you are going to want to give up. It might happen when the scale stops moving. It might happen when your lifts stall. It might happen when training feels repetitive, food feels boring, or life starts getting in the way. That moment is normal. In this episode of Beast of Burden, I talk about the part of the fitness journey people rarely discuss: the point where the original excitement fades and the reality of the work kicks in. At the beginning, it is easy to imagine the transformation. You picture yourself leaner, stronger, more confident and more in control. But then the beginner gains slow down. The timeline starts to feel longer than expected. You realise the basics need to be done for longer than you hoped. That is when people start questioning everything. This episode is about what to do when you reach that point. I cover why progress is not linear, why unrealistic timelines make people feel like they are failing, and why wanting to quit is often a sign that you are moving into the next stage of the journey. I also talk about why things like menopause, injury, medication, GLP-1 use, poor sleep, stress and busy family or work life can all change the timeline, without changing the need for the basics. The key point is this: wanting to give up does not mean you should stop. It usually means you need support, perspective and a better understanding of the timeline. At Hounds of Health, we help busy professionals in Wandsworth and Putney take charge of their health with strength training, nutrition, accountability and coaching that helps them keep going when things get hard.
