The Hidden Wound Behind Your Ambition with Dr. Mel Krüg

What if some of the things you think are personality traits are actually patterns you learned a long time ago? Dr. Mel Krug spent years believing her ambition, perfectionism, and drive were simply part of who she was. She was the straight-A student, captain of the sports teams, an All-American rugby player, and someone who looked incredibly successful on paper. Underneath all of that achievement, though, was something she would understand much later: she was chasing external validation for something she wasn’t receiving at home. Then a rugby injury changed the direction of her life. What initially felt like losing the thing she loved eventually led Mel to chiropractic, entrepreneurship, nervous system work, and the work she does today. As she built a successful business, she also started recognizing childhood patterns showing up in her leadership, relationships, and reactions. Whenever a patient stopped care or someone left her business, Mel would get angry. At them. At herself. Sometimes at her team. Eventually, she stopped long enough to ask where that reaction was actually coming from. She found herself remembering a moment from childhood. Her parents were fighting upstairs. Her dad left, and she didn’t know when he was coming back. Years later, her nervous system was still making the connection: Someone leaving = I’m unsafe. Her epiphany was that the pride she thought was protecting her was actually preventing her from seeing the wound underneath it. Mel and I talk about what happens when childhood trauma and nervous system patterns follow us into adulthood, entrepreneurship, leadership, relationships, and success. We get into rejection wounds, perfectionism, pride and shame, vulnerable leadership, nervous system regulation, faith, identity, and why being incredibly self-aware doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve changed the pattern yet. We also get into something that hit VERY close to home for me: obsessive goal setting. What happens when you finally get the title, money, business, house, or accomplishment you spent years chasing? Sometimes the first thought is: Now what? Mel challenges the way we think about goals and asks a much more interesting question: Who are you becoming in the process? That question took me straight back to my own 20-year corporate career and the realization that I had spent years climbing a ladder only to get high enough to discover I didn’t actually want where it was taking me. We talk about building from identity instead of endlessly chasing the next accomplishment, and why what we call “self-sabotage” may actually be your nervous system trying to protect you from an outcome it associates with pain. We also explore what it looks like to create success your actual LIFE can hold. Today, Mel has built her chiropractic practice so she spends about nine hours a week in the office. She also leads retreats and immersions, teaches around the world, travels with her husband, and has intentionally designed a business that supports the life she wants to live. And I keep thinking about how many things we call personality traits may have a deeper story underneath them. “I’m just driven.” “I’m a perfectionist.” “I don’t need help.” “I just have really high standards.” Maybe. Or maybe there’s something underneath the thing worth getting curious about. If you’ve accomplished a lot and still find yourself wondering why you’re chasing, proving, controlling, or pushing so hard, this conversation with Dr. Mel Krug is for you. Episode 10: When Cancer Forces You To Let Go Of The Plan with Meg Stafford

Meg Stafford did not set out to become an award-winning author because of breast cancer. She was 49, raising two daughters, running a psychotherapy practice, and had just spent three years earning a certificate in executive coaching because she thought THAT was where her career was going next. Then she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Chemo. Surgery. Radiation. Work. Motherhood. Life. And a whole lot of people asking for updates. So Meg started sending emails because she could not keep having the same conversation over and over again. Those emails became something bigger. She wrote about what was painful, what was absurd, the wig stories, the strange little moments, all of it. And people kept responding. They told her they were moved by her words. They noticed when she stopped writing. Eventually, someone told her she should turn them into a book. Her epiphany was: “I need to write more because people are moved and inspired by my words.” Those emails eventually became Topic of Cancer: Riding the Waves of the Big C, and writing became a path she never saw coming. Meg and I talk about what happens when life completely changes the plan, having to put down a dream you worked hard for, motherhood, surrender, humor, cancer, and why the things that come most naturally to us are often the things we overlook. We also get into why changing direction does not mean the work was wasted, what it looks like to trust your kids to find their own way, and how cancer became part of Meg’s life without becoming her entire identity. Nearly 20 years later, Meg is an award-winning author, speaker, storyteller, and writer who kept following the thread that first showed up during one of the hardest seasons of her life. And I keep thinking about how often other people are already pointing us toward something we are supposed to notice. They keep saying, “You’re really good at this.” And we keep saying, “Yeah, but that’s easy for me.” Maybe that’s exactly why you should pay attention. Episode 9: The Wake-Up Call That Changed How She Led Everything with Niky Hamilton

You can be incredibly resilient and still be carrying more than your life has room for. In this episode of EPIPHANIES, Anna sits down with Niky Hamilton, resilience speaker, coach, author, retreat facilitator, and former physiotherapist, for a powerful conversation about grief, burnout, leadership, boundaries, self-worth, capacity, and what happens when the woman who can handle everything finally realizes she cannot keep living that way. Niky spent years building a successful physiotherapy practice, leading a team, running women’s retreats, managing a second business, caring for family, and saying yes to almost everything. She was ambitious. Capable. Successful. She was also exhausted. Years earlier, Niky and her husband had experienced the devastating loss of their son. Grief changed her completely. She found herself battling self-blame, questioning her worth, and waiting for the woman she used to be to come back. Eventually, she realized she wasn’t coming back. She was becoming someone new. Then came another breaking point. Niky was running a retreat, traveling to support her family after her father’s stroke, navigating the heartbreak of a final failed IVF attempt, running her business, and preparing to accept an award as a finalist for Corporate Businesswoman of the Year. Her eye had become painfully red. Her response? “I don’t have time for this.” So she kept going. By the time she finally saw an ophthalmologist, she was told she was approximately 24 hours away from potentially losing the vision in that eye. Later, sitting alone in a bath completely depleted, Niky asked herself a question she couldn’t answer: When was the last time I did something nice just for me? She couldn’t remember. That moment changed the way she led her business, her relationships, and herself. Anna and Niky talk about the hidden ways busyness can become a coping mechanism, what grief does to identity, why resilience requires more than simply pushing through, and the importance of building your capacity while becoming much more intentional about what you allow onto your plate. They also unpack the permission many high-achieving women struggle to give themselves: You are allowed to choose yourself. In this episode: Why high-functioning women can miss the signs of burnoutHow busyness can become a way of avoiding what hurtsWhat grief taught Niky about rebuilding identityWhy your capacity matters just as much as your ambitionThe moment Niky realized her body could no longer absorb the way she was livingHow nearly losing her vision changed the way she ledWhy boundaries become easier when you know what actually matters to youHow to stop saying yes to things that are no longer aligned with who you are becomingWhat it really looks like to move through the messy middle of a major life changeWhy choosing yourself can create more room for joy Today, Niky says one of the biggest differences in her life is simple: She has more room for joy. Her book, Selfish Leadership: How to Lead Without Losing Yourself, takes women through the process of building capacity, making intentional choices, having courageous conversations, and learning to lead without disappearing inside everything they are responsible for. And maybe that is the epiphany here. Resilience isn’t proving how much you can survive. It’s knowing what deserves a place in the life you are building. You can look successful, capable, and completely put together while losing yourself underneath everything you’ve learned to carry. In this episode of EPIPHANIES, Anna sits down with author, speaker, speech-language pathologist, actress, and transformational coach Tenaya Yarbrough-Maxwell for a powerful conversation about identity, abusive relationships, burnout, faith, boundaries, self-worth, and rebuilding your life after survival mode. For more than 20 years, Tenaya lived inside an abusive marriage while creating a life people admired. Career. Income. Family. Accomplishments.Behind it all was a woman fighting to make it through the day.Eventually, the weight showed up in her body through chronic migraines, hospitalizations, weight loss, and months of bed rest. Then God gave her an image she would never forget: herself hunched over beneath boxes of responsibilities.“Daughter, this is not the load I had for you to carry.”That changed the way Tenaya saw everything.Anna and Tenaya talk about high-functioning burnout, healing after abuse, learning to trust your body, setting boundaries, releasing other people’s opinions, hearing God for yourself, and rebuilding an identity that is no longer rooted in survival. In this episode:Why successful women can still be living in survival modeHow over-responsibility becomes self-abandonmentWhat your body can reveal about chronic stress and misalignmentWhy boundaries matter in unhealthy relationshipsHow faith helped Tenaya rebuild after divorce and abuseWhat happened when she stopped trying to defend herself to everyoneHow to separate your identity from the labels other people gave youToday, Tenaya describes her life with three words: freedom, joy, and peace. And maybe that is the epiphany here.Being able to carry a lot does not mean you were assigned to carry all of it.Connect with Tenayawww.enjoyinglifecommunity.comConnect with AnnaInstagram: @epiphanieswithannaWebsite: epiphaniescoaching.comIf you’ve been carrying expectations, relationships, responsibilities, or identities that are costing you yourself, this conversation is for you.Who told you it was all yours to carry?

Episode 7: You Don’t Have to Earn Your Worth with Shan Wright

You can spend years being praised for the very patterns that are exhausting you. In this episode of EPIPHANIES, Anna sits down with registered nurse, holistic practitioner, speaker, coach, and host of Beat Nurse Burnout, Shan Wright, for a deeply personal conversation about perfectionism, burnout, identity, faith, and finally using the voice you were given. For years, Shan wore being the “good girl” and the perfectionist like a badge of honor. Straight A’s. High achiever. Nurse. Wife. Mom. The person who could handle it. Underneath all of that doing was a woman searching for approval, carrying chronic stress, and believing her value had something to do with how well she performed. Eventually, God started dismantling those identities one by one. The nurse was a role. “Shy” was a label. Perfectionism was never who she was. And the woman underneath all of it was being called into something completely different: strong, courageous, and willing to use her voice. Anna and Shan talk about how burnout can hide inside high-functioning women, the pressure of trying to do everything right, hearing God for yourself, and what happens when you stop living from identities you were never meant to carry. They also unpack Shan’s journey from being afraid to speak up to launching a podcast, building a business, and helping other women find freedom from chronic stress and performance. In this episode: Why perfectionism and burnout often travel together How high-functioning fatigue can look like “having it all handled” What happened when Shan asked God who she really was The power of removing labels that have shaped your identity How Shan went from believing she was shy to using her voice publicly Why your calling should not cost you your well-being ...and more! Shan’s epiphany: She had spent years asking God to help her carry everything. His answer changed the way she saw her life: “I didn’t tell you to do all those things.” The breakthrough was not learning how to carry more. It was realizing how much she had picked up that was never hers to carry in the first place. Later, another identity began to fall away. She had spent years believing she was shy. God gave her something different: Strong. Courageous. A woman with a voice. Sometimes becoming who you were created to be requires questioning the labels you have been answering to for years. About Shan Wright Shan Wright is a registered nurse of 20 years, holistic practitioner, speaker, coach, and host of the Top 2% podcast Beat Nurse Burnout. After experiencing postpartum anxiety, chronic stress, and burnout herself, Shan began uncovering the deeper patterns of perfectionism, striving, and performance underneath it all. Today, she helps nurses and high achievers move out of high-functioning fatigue and reconnect with faith, identity, energy, and purpose. Hope Dealers: Unwinding the Treasure from Trauma

What if the parts of yourself you were taught to hide are actually part of your greatest gift? In Episode 4 of EPIPHANIES, Anna sits down with Jessica Hammock for a powerful conversation about trauma, identity, infertility, faith, healing, and finding the treasure inside the hardest parts of your story. Jessica’s understanding of healing is deeply personal. She has walked through her husband’s traumatic brain injury and memory loss, significant physical illness, and a decade-long journey with infertility and loss. For years, Jessica kept asking, “What is wrong with me?” She believed she had to fix herself, perform better, and get everything right before she could receive the life she was praying for. Healing taught her something different: her worth was never dependent on her performance. Jessica also shares The Hope Factor and the difference between hope stealers, hope dealers, and hope healers. Some people leave us doubting ourselves. Others give us the encouragement to keep going. And some help heal wounds they never created. Together, Anna and Jessica explore how to stop living from performance, protect your hope, rebuild your sense of agency, and recognize that what you were once told was “too much” may actually be part of your purpose. In this episode: Why hope is something we can learnHow trauma shapes the way we see ourselvesHope stealers, hope dealers, and hope healersWhy performance cannot create worth or healingHow to uncover the treasure inside your traumaWhy being “too much” may actually be part of your gift ...... and more! Jessica’s epiphany: The treasure of who you are may be hiding inside the very things you were taught were wrong with you. Jessica spent years believing she was too emotional, too expressive, too loud, or simply “too much.” Through healing, she began to recognize those same qualities as part of her vibrancy and purpose. That is what it means to unwind the treasure from trauma. Sometimes the parts of yourself you spent years trying to fix were never the problem. They were the treasure. About Jessica Hammock Jessica Hammock is a trauma recovery coach, licensed trauma specialist, speaker, author, and founder of *Vibrant Voice*.
