The Bamboo-Cutter and the Moon-Child | The Bard and the Biwa

Deep within a bamboo forest, an elderly woodcutter discovers a tiny, radiant girl hidden inside a glowing stalk of bamboo. He and his wife raise her as their own, never imagining that their beloved daughter carries a secret beyond the reach of the earth itself. As the mysterious Princess Moonlight grows into a beautiful young woman, five noble suitors attempt to win her hand by completing seemingly impossible quests. Their adventures bring deception, disaster, and more than a little foolishness. But beneath the humor lies a bittersweet tale of family, freedom, and a love that cannot prevent an inevitable farewell. In this 40-minute presentation of The Bard and the Biwa, Desmond Childs brings to life The Bamboo-Cutter and the Moon-Child, as retold by Yei Theodora Ozaki in Japanese Fairy Tales. Following the story, join Desmond for Desmond's Disputed Notes, a new recurring segment exploring the tale's origins, cultural significance, notable adaptations, and the questions its characters leave behind. Red Letter Route | Prologue

Jonah can tell you his mileage, his fuel, and which roads need fixing. Ask him how he’s doing, and the answers get a little less precise. Meet Jonah, a courier with a dry sense of humor, and Mabel, the sharp-witted sentient necklace keeping him company. Riding Gretchen, his red motorbike, they follow a route of deliveries, detours, and unexpected encounters—where getting a letter to its destination is only part of the story. The journey begins in this prologue to Red Letter Route, a warm, anime-inspired audio adventure filled with humor, quiet wonder, and ordinary kindness. Written and produced by Desmond Childs, featuring Desmond as Jonah. A Bard & Biwa Studios production. This audio drama combines human performance with text-to-speech character voices and music.
