I Took Lexapro for 15 Years Without a Problem. Six Days Changed My Life Forever

In this episode of Moral Medicine, Stephen shares his experience developing Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) after briefly re-exposing himself to escitalopram (Lexapro) following approximately 15 years of uneventful use. After successfully tapering off the medication and feeling better than ever for seven months, he restarted Lexapro at a low dose for just six days during a period of temporary anxiety. Within days of stopping the medication, he experienced the sudden onset of profound sexual dysfunction, emotional blunting, cognitive impairment, insomnia, derealization, and numerous other persistent symptoms that have now continued for nearly three years. Today, Stephen lives with PSSD — a devastating and often unrecognized condition marked not only by severe sexual dysfunction, but by emotional numbness, anhedonia, cognitive impairment, neurological symptoms, autonomic dysfunction, and a profound loss of identity. His experience highlights an important and often overlooked reality: PSSD can occur even after many years of previously uneventful SSRI use and may develop following a brief re-exposure to the same medication. In this interview, Stephen discusses the long-term impact PSSD has had on every aspect of his life, including his relationships, sexuality, physical health, emotional well-being, cognition, and future. He also reflects on the absence of informed consent, the challenges of seeking medical care for a poorly recognized condition, and the devastating realization that the symptoms he developed could persist long after discontinuing the medication. This is his story. 🧠 Hosted by Grant Slowik 📺 Moral Medicine is a platform for those harmed by medications — and for those fighting to be heard. 👇 Watch, share, and help us break the silence. “He Was My Baby” — Mary Gould on Losing Her Son Conall After Finasteride

In this episode of Moral Medicine, Mary Gould shares the story of her son Conall, a young man from Ireland who developed severe and persistent symptoms after taking finasteride at just 18 years old and tragically lost his life at 21. Before finasteride entered his life, Conall was athletic, social, and full of potential. He loved Gaelic football, enjoyed school, and was described by his mother as the “soul of the party” — a vibrant young man with a bright future ahead of him. Like many patients, Conall was never meaningfully warned about the possibility of persistent sexual, neurological, or psychological side effects. He was prescribed finasteride for hair loss concerns as a teenager, with no indication that the drug could potentially cause long-term harm. After taking finasteride for a relatively short period of time, Conall began experiencing symptoms that progressively worsened. What followed was a devastating decline marked by severe anxiety, sexual dysfunction, cognitive impairment, brain fog, muscle symptoms, emotional distress, and profound changes in his overall sense of well-being. As his condition deteriorated, Conall repeatedly sought medical help, desperately trying to understand what was happening to him. Mary opens up about: • Conall developing severe symptoms after taking finasteride at just 18 years old. • His progressive decline, including sexual, neurological, physical, and psychological symptoms. • Conall eventually discovering Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS) himself after searching for answers.• Repeated attempts to seek medical help, only to face dismissal and a lack of meaningful recognition. • Healthcare providers labeling Conall belief in PFS as delusional, leading to additional psychiatric medications. • The devastating emotional toll PFS had not only on Conall, but on his entire family. • Conall final request to his mother — to tell his story. One of the most powerful aspects of Mary’s testimony is her description of the secondary trauma caused by medical dismissal and invalidation. As she explains, the suffering was not limited to the physical symptoms alone. The lack of recognition, compassion, and meaningful support compounded Conall despair and contributed to a profound loss of hope. This interview highlights ongoing concerns surrounding informed consent, delayed recognition of adverse drug reactions, psychiatric mislabeling, and the devastating consequences that can occur when patients suffering from iatrogenic injury are not believed. While many individuals take finasteride without apparent issue, others report persistent or long-term symptoms often referred to as Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS). The underlying mechanisms remain unclear, and there is currently no reliable way to predict who may be affected. 🔬 Research into PFS remains largely patient-funded, but awareness is growing. 📢 If you’ve been affected by PFS, PSSD, PAS, or similar post-drug syndromes, your story matters. I Lost My Youth to Post-Finasteride Syndrome | A College Professor's 14-Year Story

In this episode of Moral Medicine, Lucas, a 37-year-old college professor from Brazil, shares his 14-year experience with finasteride and the profound long-term consequences that followed after taking the drug at just 18 years old for hair loss. Like many patients, Lucas says he was never warned about the possibility of persistent sexual, neurological, or psychological side effects. He was simply told the medication would help stop his hair loss. Within days of starting finasteride, he began noticing changes. What followed was a gradual decline marked by sexual dysfunction, emotional blunting, cognitive changes, fatigue, and a growing sense that he was losing touch with the person he once was. He describes not only physical symptoms, but also the disturbing experience of feeling emotionally disconnected and no longer recognizing his former self. Lucas opens up about: • Experiencing sexual side effects within just days of starting finasteride. • Gradually losing libido, emotional connection, and his sense of identity over time. • Developing cognitive symptoms, including speech and thinking difficulties. • Briefly feeling normal again after discontinuing the drug, only to relapse. • Living with persistent symptoms for 14 years and enduring a severe health deterioration years after stopping. • The profound psychological burden of grieving lost years, lost opportunities, and an uncertain future. • Receiving little validation or meaningful support from medical professionals. One of the most powerful aspects of Lucas’s testimony is his description of the emotional and psychological toll of living with chronic symptoms for over a decade. As he explains, Post-Finasteride Syndrome did not simply affect his sexual health — it changed the way he experiences relationships, plans for the future, and sees himself. His testimony highlights ongoing concerns surrounding informed consent, delayed recognition of adverse effects, and the devastating human impact these conditions can have when patients are left without answers. While many individuals take finasteride without apparent issue, others report persistent or long-term symptoms often referred to as Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS). I Lost My Sexual Identity After Prozac

In this episode of Moral Medicine, Katie shares her experience developing Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) after being prescribed fluoxetine (Prozac) at 21 years old during a difficult period in her life. She remained on the medication for approximately three years before realizing that the emotional blunting, sexual dysfunction, loss of attraction, and inability to form romantic connections she was experiencing began after taking SSRIs. She has now been living with these symptoms for approximately 14 years. Today, Katie lives with PSSD — a devastating and often unrecognized condition marked not only by sexual dysfunction, but by emotional numbness, anhedonia, cognitive and emotional changes, and loss of identity. Her experience reflects the reality many patients describe: symptoms that continue long after stopping the medication, and a lack of clear warning about the possibility of permanence. In this interview, Katie discusses the long-term impact PSSD has had on her life, relationships, sexuality, sense of self, and mental well-being. She also reflects on the absence of informed consent, the emotional consequences of not understanding what was happening to her, and the years spent believing something was fundamentally wrong with her rather than recognizing the role the medication had played. This is her story. 🧠 Hosted by Mark Millich 📺 Moral Medicine is a platform for those harmed by medications — and for those fighting to be heard. 👇 Watch, share, and help us break the silence.PSSD can have a catastrophic impact on patients, families, and communities. This Year I'm turning 30 years old, and I haven't felt an orgasm since I was 24

In this episode of Moral Medicine, Matt shares his experience with Finasteride after taking the drug for several years without issue — and the sudden, life-altering changes that followed. Matt began taking finasteride in his mid-20s and tolerated the medication for three years with no noticeable side effects. Like many, he believed that if a problem were going to occur, it would happen early. It didn’t. One day, everything changed. What began as a sudden loss of sexual sensation quickly progressed into something far more severe. Matt describes a rapid and debilitating shift marked by: • Complete loss of genital sensation and inability to experience orgasm• Severe emotional blunting and anhedonia — a total absence of feeling• Cognitive impairment and disorganized thinking• Chronic physical symptoms including fatigue, pain, and digestive issues• The onset of symptoms worsening after discontinuing the drug Despite stopping finasteride, these symptoms did not resolve. Years later, they remain. Matt opens up about the confusion, isolation, and lack of recognition he faced when trying to understand what had happened — including being reassured that his symptoms were unrelated or psychological. His experience reflects a pattern reported by others following the use of medications such as Finasteride, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, and Isotretinoin, where individuals describe persistent sexual, neurological, and emotional changes after discontinuation. While many people take these medications without immediate issue, others report long-term symptoms often referred to as Post-Finasteride Syndrome. The underlying mechanisms remain unclear, and there is currently no reliable way to predict who may be affected. Matt’s testimony highlights ongoing concerns around informed consent, delayed onset adverse effects, and the difficulty many patients face when their experiences fall outside of what is widely recognized. If you or someone you know has experienced persistent symptoms after medication use, you are not alone. 🔬 Research into PFS remains largely patient-funded, but awareness is growing. 📢 If you’ve been affected by PFS, PSSD, or similar post-drug syndromes, your story matters. He Took Finasteride for 17 Years… Then His Doctor Refused to Help

In this episode of Moral Medicine, Tim shares his experience with finasteride after being prescribed the medication for prostate-related issues — and the long-term consequences that followed after years of use without proper warning. Tim began taking 5 mg daily after being told he may need the medication for the rest of his life. He was not informed of potential sexual, neurological, or psychological side effects. Within a short period of time, he began experiencing changes. What followed was a gradual decline marked by persistent sexual dysfunction, neurological complications, and a loss of physical mobility that has not improved even after discontinuing the drug. Tim opens up about: • Developing loss of libido and erectile dysfunction shortly after starting the medication.• The breakdown of a 23-year relationship as a result of these changes.• Being diagnosed with neuropathy and experiencing long-term mobility issues.• Taking the medication for nearly 17 years before connecting his symptoms.• Receiving no meaningful support after reporting his condition to medical professionals. After eventually discovering a warning about finasteride, Tim stopped taking the drug. Nearly a year later, his symptoms have remained unchanged. His testimony highlights ongoing concerns around informed consent, delayed recognition of adverse effects, and the challenges patients face when seeking answers. While many individuals take finasteride without immediate issue, others report persistent or long-term symptoms often referred to as Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS). The mechanism remains unclear, and there is currently no reliable way to predict who may be affected. 🔬 Research into PFS remains largely patient-funded, but awareness is growing. 📢 If you’ve been affected by PFS, PSSD, or similar post-drug syndromes, your story matters. I Took Finasteride for 3 Days. It Changed My Life for 5 Years.

In this episode of Moral Medicine, Marko shares his personal experience with finasteride — and the life-altering crash that followed after just three pills. Marko began taking 1 mg per day after following advice from online experts and consulting with a dermatologist. The prescription process was brief and straightforward. Within three days, he noticed side effects and stopped immediately. The next day, he crashed. What followed was a year marked by neurological dysfunction, psychological distress, and physical symptoms that left him unable to work and struggling to function. He describes being dismissed by doctors, having his symptoms minimized, and being told his condition was psychological. Marko opens up about: • How easily finasteride is prescribed after minimal evaluation.• The unpredictability of who develops persistent symptoms.• The experience of medical gaslighting and lack of recognition.• Losing five of the most important years of his life.• Gradually rebuilding and reaching partial recovery. Five years later, Marko is significantly improved compared to where he was at his worst — but he is not the same person he was before. His testimony underscores a difficult reality: while many individuals take finasteride without immediate issue, a subset report persistent or long-term symptoms often referred to as Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS). The mechanism remains unclear, and there is currently no reliable way to predict who may be affected. 🔬 Research into PFS remains largely patient-funded, but awareness is growing. 📢 If you’ve been affected by PFS, PSSD, or similar post-drug syndromes, your story matters.
