    Sheela Na Gig Episode 87: Everyday Sheela: Angelina

    If you're like me, everyday, you meet new and interesting people and if you're like me, you may ask a lot of questions about their lives. My husband, in fact, has nicknamed me "Studs", after writer and oral historian, Studs Terkle. I take it as a huge compliment,  as I love delving into people's stories and hearing tales of how their lives and the world has shaped them. But some of these tales are harrowing and beyond anything I've heard before, which brings me to our new Sheela Na Gig episodes, called "Everyday Sheelas". You may never know by looking at these people, what they've been through, but their stories need to be told and these everyday women, in our case, need to be celebrated!   Which brings us to our 1st Everyday Sheela, meet Angelina. Her story exemplifies strength and tenacity and an innate desire to care for others, beyond herself. She's truly a survivor whose story needs to be shared.   We are truly honored to interview Angelina, as our 1st " Everyday Sheela" and hope you will tune in!   We also welcome your comments,  questions and your stories too!     In today’s episode April explores writer, American progressive activist and feminist Marge Piercy. An extremely prolific writer, Piercy has published close to 20 books of poetry and close to 20 novels. Her novels generally address larger social concerns through sharply observed characters and brisk plot lines. Though generally focused on issues such as class or culture, and usually written from a feminist position, Piercy’s novels have taken on a variety of guises, including historical fiction and science or speculative fiction. She’s quite a Sheela!   “Marge Piercy is not just an author, she’s a cultural touchstone.     PART 2 -Dare Wright was an extraordinary story teller & photographer , and also an actress & model, who single handedly changed the genre of Children's literature in 1957 when she published her first of 10, Lonely Doll books. We had left off as Dare’s success had launched. In this episode, Dare continues to create her stunning “Lonely Doll” series, truly the only thing in her life she can call her own, despite her controlling mother. However, the mother daughter relationship continues to intensify, ultimately leading to the traumatic undoing of Dare Wright.
