The Vikings' Offense Is About To FIGURE IT OUT... Here's Why

The Minnesota Vikings' offense has been one of the biggest concerns of their 4-0 start. The numbers aren't pretty. Minnesota ranks 27th in EPA per play and 32nd in success rate, and the Vikings have scored just one offensive touchdown over their last three games. But Tyler Forness believes the offense is much closer to figuring things out than the numbers suggest. The biggest question is what Kevin O'Connell needs to change to unlock Kyler Murray and this passing game. Defenses are beginning to understand exactly what Minnesota wants to do. The Vikings love attacking the intermediate areas of the field, particularly the middle of the field, and opposing defenses are refusing to bite on the shorter routes underneath. That creates a major problem. If linebackers and underneath defenders can sit at depth without being forced forward, the intermediate windows that Kevin O'Connell wants to attack become much more difficult to access. So what's the solution? Take what the defense gives you. Tyler breaks down why Minnesota needs to incorporate more quick game, mesh, stick, slants, speed outs, curl-flat concepts and other short throws that can get Kyler Murray into rhythm and force defenders to respect the underneath portion of the field. Then, once defenses begin reacting to those short completions, Minnesota can start attacking vertically and going back to the intermediate concepts that make O'Connell's offense so dangerous. It's essentially a game of chess. Get the linebackers moving forward. Create space. Hit the easy throws. Build success rate. Then attack the intermediate areas. Then take the deep shot. Kyler Murray also deserves some context. This is only his second game in Kevin O'Connell's offensive system, and Tyler explains why learning a new system can cause a quarterback to play more cautiously while he is still processing what he's seeing. That doesn't mean Murray gets a free pass. He still has to execute. But there are encouraging signs. Murray has generally taken care of the football, shown the ability to read the field and delivered several impressive throws. The biggest issue may be getting him into situations where the offense creates the kind of windows he is most comfortable attacking. The absence of Justin Jefferson is another major factor. Minnesota's best receiver changes the geometry of the defense, and Tyler explains why replacing Jefferson's ability to clear space for intermediate routes is much more difficult than simply replacing his production on the stat sheet. But if Kevin O'Connell can make these adjustments, Tyler believes the Vikings could suddenly have something special. Because if the offense starts clicking alongside what Tyler believes is the NFL's best defense and best special teams unit, Minnesota could become a legitimate Super Bowl contender. The Vikings are 4-0. Now they have to figure out how to unlock the offense. Tyler Forness breaks down exactly how Minnesota can do it. The Vikings Are 4-0... But They Have A BIG Problem

The Minnesota Vikings are 4-0. It wasn't pretty, but Minnesota found a way to beat the Miami Dolphins 15-10 and there are plenty of reasons to feel encouraged about where this team is heading. But there is also one major problem that the Vikings have to fix. Tyler Forness breaks down Minnesota's win over Miami and explains why the Vikings are absolutely trending in the right direction while still having some frustrating issues that could become much bigger problems against better teams. The biggest concern is the little things. Minnesota committed 11 penalties for 85 yards, including false starts, alignment issues and procedural mistakes that simply shouldn't continue to happen for a team in Kevin O'Connell's fifth season. The Vikings even had to burn a timeout late in the game because they weren't lined up correctly. Those mistakes are manageable against a rebuilding Miami team. They could be devastating against the best teams in the NFC. But there were plenty of positives on offense, too. Kyler Murray completed 27 of 37 passes for 247 yards and showed several encouraging signs as he continues to grow within Minnesota's offense. T.J. Hockenson was outstanding, catching all 13 of his targets for 119 yards, while Aaron Jones ran for 94 yards on 20 carries. The Vikings also continued to show a better balance between their running and passing games, something that has been an important storyline throughout the beginning of the season. Tyler explains why the Vikings' offense is actually showing growth even if the production hasn't fully exploded yet. He also breaks down the continued impact of Justin Jefferson's absence, the importance of getting the football into Minnesota's playmakers' hands quickly and why Kevin O'Connell needs to clean up the procedural issues that have followed this team for too long. Defensively, the Vikings once again did what they needed to do. Minnesota held Miami to just 198 total yards, limited the Dolphins to 2-of-9 on third down and did an excellent job containing Malik Willis for most of the afternoon. There were some explosive runs allowed, but Brian Flores' defense once again made the critical plays when Minnesota needed them. Special teams played a major role as well, with Will Reichard going 5-for-5 on field goals and Minnesota creating problems for Miami in the kicking game. The Vikings are 4-0. The offense is improving. The defense remains one of the best units in football. But if Minnesota really wants to make a Super Bowl run, the little things have to get fixed. Tyler Forness breaks down the biggest takeaways from Minnesota's win over Miami and explains why the Vikings could look very different coming out of the bye. The Minnesota Vikings are 3-0, and their next matchup against the Miami Dolphins could be the perfect opportunity for Kyler Murray and the Vikings offense to finally show what they can be. Tyler Forness previews Vikings vs. Dolphins and breaks down the biggest matchups, players and tactical elements to watch when Minnesota takes on Miami. The Vikings' offense has not been particularly efficient through the first three games of the season. Minnesota currently ranks near the bottom of the NFL in several offensive efficiency categories, including EPA per play, EPA per dropback, success rate and explosive play rate. But there are reasons for optimism. Kyler Murray is coming off a game against Tampa Bay where his performance was more complicated than the box score suggested. Tyler explains why Murray deserves more context when evaluating his play and why this matchup against Miami could give him significantly more opportunities to attack vertically. The Dolphins have been much better against the run than the pass, creating a matchup that should encourage Minnesota to put the football in Murray's hands. That could mean more opportunities for Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson to attack downfield. Tyler also breaks down the Dolphins' defensive tendencies, including their use of Cover 6, and explains which concepts could give Miami problems. Crossers and vertical routes could be particularly important for Minnesota as it tries to generate the explosive plays that have been missing from the offense. On the other side of the football, Brian Flores' defense has been one of the best units in the NFL. The Vikings rank first in EPA per play allowed, third in EPA per dropback and second in EPA per rush. Miami will be starting Malik Willis at quarterback, which creates another interesting challenge for Minnesota's defense because of Willis' ability to escape the pocket and create explosive plays with his legs and arm. Tyler explains why Caleb Banks could be an important player in this matchup, how Minnesota's aggressive blitz packages could attack Miami's pass protection and why containing Willis will be just as important as generating pressure. The Vikings have a chance to move to 4-0. And Tyler believes this could finally be the game where Kyler Murray and the Vikings offense put everything together. The Vikings Should NOT Fire Kevin O'Connell... Here's Why

Kevin O'Connell has become a major source of frustration for Minnesota Vikings fans, especially after the J.J. McCarthy experiment ended with the former 10th overall pick being traded to the New York Giants. But does Kevin O'Connell actually deserve to be on the hot seat? Tyler Forness breaks down the entire argument and explains why the answer is more complicated than simply looking at the Vikings' offensive struggles. O'Connell has flaws. Tyler acknowledges that throughout the video, particularly when it comes to the Vikings' offensive performance and the need for continued evolution on that side of the football. But being a head coach is about much more than calling plays. Since taking over in Minnesota, O'Connell has helped build a coaching staff, develop players and establish an environment where numerous players have maximized their abilities. The Vikings have also consistently found value throughout their roster, including contributions from players on offense, defense and special teams. That broader context matters when evaluating O'Connell. The J.J. McCarthy situation is another major part of the conversation. McCarthy's development did not work out in Minnesota, but Kevin O'Connell's famous comments about organizations failing young quarterbacks require more context than simply applying them to one quarterback or one situation. Tyler breaks down what O'Connell actually meant, how much responsibility the Vikings organization should have for McCarthy's development and why the failure of the McCarthy experiment does not automatically mean O'Connell should be replaced. At the same time, there is a legitimate question that O'Connell still has to answer. Can his offense finally become good enough to complement Brian Flores' defense? The Vikings have won football games, but the offense has not consistently performed at the level expected from an O'Connell-led team. Tyler explains why that needs to change while also explaining why those shortcomings do not necessarily justify moving on from the head coach. This is ultimately a conversation about what Kevin O'Connell actually is as a head coach, what he has done well, what he needs to improve and what the Vikings should realistically expect from him moving forward. Is Kevin O'Connell perfect? No. Does the offense need to improve? Absolutely. But is he actually on the hot seat right now? Tyler Forness breaks it all down. The Vikings Have A BIG Kevin O'Connell Problem...

The Vikings' offense struggled badly against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but was Kyler Murray really the biggest problem? Tyler Forness goes through the film from Minnesota's 23-16 win over Tampa Bay and explains why the answer isn't as simple as blaming the Vikings' new quarterback. Murray finished 15-of-29 for 168 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but the bigger issue was what Tampa Bay's defense was able to take away from Minnesota's offense. Todd Bowles devised a plan designed to contain Murray in the pocket, using the Buccaneers' edge defenders to keep him from escaping while creating pressure primarily from the interior. That prevented Murray from using one of the biggest strengths of his game — creating outside of structure with his legs. The Vikings also struggled to adjust once Tampa Bay changed the way it defended Minnesota in the second half. Jordan Addison had a strong game, catching five passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, and Minnesota found success early attacking Tampa Bay's Cover 3 looks. But as the game progressed, the Buccaneers' linebackers began playing with more depth and the Vikings struggled to create the underneath opportunities that could have forced those defenders to move forward. That's where Tyler believes Kevin O'Connell deserves significant criticism. The Vikings continued trying to attack vertically instead of consistently using shallow crossers, mesh concepts and other underneath routes that could have created yards after catch opportunities and forced Tampa Bay's linebackers to adjust. There were also communication issues between Murray and his receivers, showing that the quarterback and the Vikings' skill players still have work to do developing chemistry inside O'Connell's offense. But Tyler's biggest takeaway is that Murray simply wasn't as bad as the box score suggests. There are things Murray needs to clean up. There were missed opportunities and miscommunications. But when a quarterback repeatedly has nowhere to throw the football, it's difficult to place the majority of the blame on him. The bigger question is whether O'Connell can adjust when opposing defenses successfully take away the Vikings' preferred concepts. Tyler breaks down the film, explains Todd Bowles' defensive plan, examines Kyler Murray's performance and looks at what Minnesota needs to fix offensively before the problems become bigger. The Vikings Just Gave Up On J.J. McCarthy... Here's Why

The J.J. McCarthy era is officially over in Minnesota. The Vikings have traded McCarthy to the New York Giants for a fifth-round pick, ending one of the most disappointing quarterback situations in recent franchise history. Tyler Forness breaks down why Minnesota made the decision to move on from its former 10th overall pick and why this wasn't simply about what happened on the football field. McCarthy's performance was a major factor. After being selected 10th overall in 2024, McCarthy never developed into the quarterback Minnesota hoped he would become. Tyler explains why the Vikings ultimately determined that McCarthy had not improved enough to earn the starting job and why his preseason performance made the decision increasingly difficult to avoid. But there was more to the situation. Multiple reports raised questions about McCarthy's consistency and day-to-day process, including whether the Vikings were consistently getting the same version of their young quarterback. Tyler examines that reporting and explains why those concerns mattered when combined with McCarthy's performance on the field. At the same time, Tyler argues that responsibility does not fall entirely on McCarthy. Kevin O'Connell himself has previously discussed the role organizations play in developing young quarterbacks, and Tyler explains why the Vikings still have some level of responsibility for how the McCarthy experiment unfolded. The Vikings also provided McCarthy with a highly regarded offensive system, strong weapons and an offensive line that graded around the middle of the league. That makes the decision to move on even more significant. Now Minnesota turns the page to Kyler Murray. The former first-round pick gets a fresh start with the Giants, while the Vikings have to live with the reality that their 10th overall pick from 2024 ultimately returned only a fifth-round pick. It is a difficult admission for any franchise. But Tyler explains why Minnesota ultimately decided that continuing to force the McCarthy situation was no longer the right path for either side. How much of the failure belongs to McCarthy? How much belongs to the Vikings and Kevin O'Connell? And what does this mean for the Vikings moving forward with Kyler Murray? Tyler Forness breaks it all down. Subscribe to A to Z Sports Minnesota Vikings for Vikings news, analysis, film breakdowns and reaction all season long. 0:00 J.J. The Vikings' Defense Just CARRIED Them To 3-0...

The Minnesota Vikings are 3-0. And they just found another way to win. Minnesota defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-16 despite losing Justin Jefferson to an ankle injury after just one series and getting a relatively limited offensive performance from Kyler Murray. Tyler Forness breaks down the biggest takeaways from the Vikings' Week 3 win and explains why there is no reason to panic about Kyler Murray yet. Murray only has four and a half quarters of football with the Vikings, and Sunday was a particularly difficult situation after Justin Jefferson left the game. Jefferson's presence changes everything for Minnesota's offense, and once he was sidelined, the Vikings had a much harder time getting receivers open and moving the football consistently. There were certainly things Murray needs to improve, but the sample size remains extremely small. His first three throws of 20-plus yards were all completed, and Minnesota's offensive line gave him relatively solid protection throughout the game. The bigger story continues to be Brian Flores' defense. The Vikings generated six sacks and 29 total pressures against Baker Mayfield. Dallas Turner led the team with seven pressures, while multiple players contributed to the pass rush. That collective approach is exactly what Minnesota has been building defensively. The Vikings were also able to pressure Mayfield relentlessly, creating 32 blitzes across 42 dropbacks and keeping Tampa Bay from consistently finding a rhythm offensively. That defense has now become the catalyst behind Minnesota's 3-0 start. Tyler also discusses Justin Jefferson's injury and what Minnesota might do if he has to miss additional time, Kyler Murray's performance, the offensive line, Dallas Turner's continued emergence and why the Vikings' ability to win ugly is actually a positive development. The Vikings aren't playing perfect football. But they're finding different ways to win. And at 3-0, that's exactly what matters. The Minnesota Vikings are 2-0 and preparing for a massive Week 3 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And the biggest question entering Sunday is simple: Can the Buccaneers find a way to slow down Brian Flores' defense? Tyler Forness breaks down the biggest Vikings advantages, concerns and matchups ahead of Minnesota's showdown with Tampa Bay. The Vikings defense has been one of the biggest surprises in the NFL through two weeks. Brian Flores has maximized his personnel by creating confusion, attacking protection rules and allowing players like Dallas Turner to thrive. Turner has become one of the biggest storylines on Minnesota's defense, already recording three sacks and 20 pressures. Tyler explains why the Vikings' approach is creating favorable situations for Turner and why Tampa Bay's struggles against stunts, twists and interior pressure could create major problems. Then there's Kyler Murray. After missing time due to injury, Murray is expected to return and give the Vikings offense a completely different element. While Minnesota only has 11 plays of data with Murray on the field, his mobility, athleticism and ability to attack intermediate areas of the field could dramatically change Kevin O'Connell's offense. Tyler also discusses the growing concern in Minnesota's running back room. With Jordan Mason already injured and Aaron Jones dealing with another injury, the Vikings could quickly find themselves in a difficult situation at running back. Could Minnesota look to add help? Or will the offense need to rely more heavily on the passing game? Finally, Tyler breaks down the matchup to watch with T.J.
