Move over, mindfulness walk — there’s a new walk in town: Spooky Bitch Walk. It’s for the bitches who aren’t trying to improve themselves... they just want to scare themselves. I’m Hannah, and each week I’ll be joined by a co-host as we walk you through a true crime case or spooky story.     Friendly Postal Worker Murdered While Delivering Mail

    In October 2021, Jason Schaefer was delivering mail on his typical mail route in Longmont, CO, when someone walked up to him and shot him in the face. Despite first responders’ best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. By the end of the day, police had arrested someone for his murder. This person was Devan Schreiner.  Jason and Devan had dated in the past and shared a son but were no longer together. Two days before the murder, Jason had filed for full custody, and investigators soon discovered that Jason had been dating Devan’s sister. Devan had a motive, but police needed hard evidence. Luckily, almost everyone has some sort of camera on their house, and police are able to collect this footage from houses in the area as evidence. As if this wasn’t enough, Devan is also a mail carrier and her mail scanner had been inactive for about an hour during the time of Jason’s murder.  All of this evidence points to Devan, but detectives were also able to collect enough evidence to implicate Devan’s boyfriend, AJ  Ritchie, in the murder as well.     The Strength of Karoline Borega: How She Overcame the Disgusting Crimes of Her Husband

    Karoline Borega had been married to Joel Kern for over 20 years when she discovered her husband had been living a secret double life. Joel was a highly respected officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department. He continued to climb the ladder in his career and was scheduled to become the Public Information Officer (PIO). He came home one day and told Karoline he had gotten in an argument with the chief of police which resulted in him taking away the PIO position from Joel. Karoline didn’t understand. Joel never got in arguments with anyone, especially not his boss. She would later find out that Joel was under investigation with Internal Affairs and as a result could not move into the PIO role.  Eventually, Joel can’t hide his transgressions from his wife any longer and has to come clean. He ends up going to rehab for a sex addiction in order to save his job and possibly his marriage. While he was there, Karoline digs into their phone records and discovers even more information confirming Joel had been and was continuing to lie to her. This was the final straw and she filed for divorce.  Karoline and her children have been able to move forward with their lives and be successful in spite of Joel.     “Craziest, Stupidest, Deadliest Catfishing Scheme You Have Ever Seen”

    Bill Payne and Billie Jean Hayworth were murdered in their home while Billie Jean was holding their 7 month old baby in her arms. Investigators wondered who could possibly be so cold blooded that they would kill a mother holding her baby? As they interviewed Bill and Billie Jean’s friends and family, one name kept coming up: the Potters.  Barbara and Buddy Potter’s daughter, Jenelle, had been accusing Bill and Billie Jean of harassing and threatening her for months. Despite there being no evidence that this was actually happening, Jenelle was able to convince her parents and boyfriend, Jamie Curd, that it was.     The Senseless Murder of Mary Ann Murphy

    In 2010, Keri Murphy was starting her freshman year at Nimitz High School in Humble, TX. She joined the JV choir, not knowing that this decision would change the course of her life. For the holiday performance, all three choirs at the school came together to perform. This is when Keri met Rebecca Keller. Rebecca was a senior and Keri thought she was so cool. The two seemed drawn to each other and shortly after meeting, they started dating.  Keri’s mom, Mary Ann, approved at first, until she found out Rebecca was a 19 year old senior about to graduate. Mary Ann told Keri they could no longer see each other. But it was too late. They were too in love and nothing would keep them apart. Keri was caught sneaking out of her house and sneaking Rebecca into the house multiple times. Mary Ann had had enough. She called the police and got a restraining order making it illegal for Rebecca to be near Keri. Even this didn’t keep them from seeing each other.  One night in July 2012, Keri made a 911 call saying she had heard her mom scream from her bedroom and saw two men running out of the house. First responders arrived at the scene and noticed some discrepancies with Keri’s story almost immediately.     Appalachian Trail Killer

    In 2008, Scott Johnston and Sean Farmer were camping and fishing in Giles County, Virginia, along the Appalachian Trail. They met a man on the trail who introduced himself as Ricky. They invited him to have dinner with them and he accepted. After dinner, as it was getting dark, the man suddenly pulled out a hand gun and started shooting at them. Scott was shot in the neck and back. Sean was shot in the face and chest. They were both badly injured but they were able to escape in one of their vehicles and made it to a nearby house where they called 911. However, the nearest hospital was 40 minutes away so they had to wait for help to arrive.  Both men ended up being airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, but both survived. Law enforcement immediately suspected 55 year old Randall Lee Smith of committing this crime because he had done this before. Twenty-seven years earlier, Randall Lee Smith had murdered two hikers on the Appalachian Trail and only served 15 years in prison before being released on parole.     The Classifieds Killer: Paul Runge

    In 1997, a mother and her ten year old daughter were brutally assaulted and murdered in their home in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Investigators were able to collect DNA, but there were no matches. It wouldn’t be until 2000, after the state and federal DNA databases were combined, that they would get a match and a name: Paul Runge. Paul was in prison at the time for a parole violation. Police had suspected he was guilty of another murder that occurred in 1995 and knew he was a dangerous man that needed to be separated from the public. So they issued a search warrant of his home and found weapons which was a violation of his parole so they were able to arrest him and put him in prison.  When confronted with the DNA evidence, Paul immediately said “you got me.” He went on to recount his crimes to detectives including multiple other rapes and murders.  Come along with Hannah and her mom as they discuss cat condos, white vans, and who actually owns a meat cleaver?  CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of sexual assault, rape, kidnapping, arson, and homicide.     The Brutal Murder of Angie Samota

    In October 1984, Angie Samota was a junior at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. She had gone out with friends one Friday night and had gotten home safely when she heard a knock on the door. She answered the door to find a man she didn’t know asking to use her phone and bathroom. Because she was kind, she let him in. While he was in the bathroom, she called her boyfriend to let him know there was a man in her apartment. She said she’d call him back in a few minutes. When her boyfriend didn’t hear back, he drove over to her apartment. When she didn’t answer the door, he called police.  Angie was found naked and bloody on her bed. There were four men in her life that were persons of interest at first but police didn’t have any solid evidence and eventually, the case went cold. Over 20 years later, DNA would lead to the arrest of a man that hadn’t ever been on police’s radar.     The Death of Scott Johnson

    In December 1988, the body of a young man was found at the base of the North Head cliffs in Manly, Australia. This was 27 year old Scott Johnson. Police ruled this a suicide almost immediately. Scott had moved to Australia to be with his partner, Michael. Michael told police that Scott had had suicidal thoughts in the past but had been in good spirits lately as he was finishing his PhD in Mathematics and had his whole future ahead of him. Scott’s family never believed his death was a suicide. They tried to accept it, but it never quite felt right.  Nearly 17 years later, Scott’s brother, Steve, received an article in the mail from Michael about three gay men who had disappeared or died in the 1980s along the cliffs of Bondi Beach which was less than an hour from where Scott was found. Could Scott’s death have actually been a homicide instead of a suicide? Could this have been a hate crime? Steve was determined to find out. He was now a millionaire and was able to use his resources to put pressure on police to open the case and investigate it more thoroughly.  Eventually, someone was arrested for the murder of Scott Johnson, but was this arrest the result of a coerced confession?
