Frank O'Brien won an episode of AMC's The Pitch with a 60-person agency, then tore it down, a move he writes about in his new book, Stop Freaking Out. He and Kevin get into why execution is cheap now, how Frank trains Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini by making them compete, and whether the agency business survives AI. #016 — Brandt Goodwin

Brandt Goodwin has spent decades inside one of the most fascinating industries most people never truly understand. From dealing blackjack and poker to working alongside professional gamblers, casino executives, and entrepreneurs, he's built a career around reading people, managing risk, and making decisions under pressure. Along the way, he's also navigated injuries, competition, relationships, and the challenge of finding purpose beyond chasing the next win. In this conversation, Brandt and Kevin (friends for 30+ years) explore everything from aging as an athlete and the psychology of competition to life inside casinos, entrepreneurship, card counting, perfectionism, and what it really means to be present. They unpack the realities of the gambling industry, discuss why great coaches adapt instead of forcing a system, and examine how our identities evolve as we get older. It's a wide-ranging conversation about ambition, resilience, relationships, and building a life that lasts longer than your career. Summary Brandt Goodwin has spent his life chasing mastery, whether it was in sports, the casino industry, fitness, or business. In this conversation, he and Kevin Mooney unpack what happens when identity collides with age, competition, and changing priorities. What starts as a conversation about training quickly expands into injuries, ambition, career decisions, entrepreneurship, gambling, relationships, and the search for meaning. Brandt shares stories from years as a blackjack and poker dealer, explains how professional gamblers actually think, and breaks down the reality behind card counting, casino operations, and risk management. Along the way, the discussion shifts into personal territory as both reflect on perfectionism, being present, long-term relationships, and the challenge of finding contentment instead of constantly chasing the next thing. It's a conversation about growing older without giving up your edge, understanding the psychology behind competition, and recognizing that success isn't always about winning. Sometimes it's about building a life you actually want to keep living. Chapters:00:00 Training, Aging, and Staying Competitive15:03 Injuries, Softball, and Athletic Identity28:19 Why Functional Fitness Matters34:31 Oregon, California, and Choosing Where to Live52:22 Constant Change vs. Putting Down Roots01:04:27 Relationships, Perfectionism, and Being Present01:22:45 Life Inside the Casino Industry01:38:07 Professional Gamblers and Card Counting02:06:32 Entrepreneurship, Risk, and Decision Making02:29:41 Lessons From a Career at the Tables03:02:08 Gaming Regulation and Industry Realities03:15:44 Final Reflections Takeaways Fitness changes from performance to longevity as you get older. Injuries force athletes to rethink what competition means. Great coaching is about adapting to the person, not the program. Consistency matters more than intensity over the long run. Professional gamblers focus on probabilities, not emotions. Card counting is real, but casinos have adapted to reduce the advantage. Small percentage changes create enormous financial swings in gambling. Entrepreneurship rewards patience more than constant change. Perfectionism can become a barrier to happiness and healthy relationships. Being present is often harder than staying busy. Long-term fulfillment comes from comfort, trust, and shared experience rather than excitement alone. Oregon and California create very different mindsets around lifestyle, freedom, and opportunity.

    #015 — Ryan Blake

Ryan Blake is a coffee roaster, creative, and longtime friend who has spent years building businesses, chasing ideas, and questioning the way creative work is marketed and sold. What starts as an absurd conversation about launching a Lord of the Rings-inspired foot-themed OnlyFans quickly turns into a surprisingly honest discussion about burnout, AI, strategy, social media, entrepreneurship, coffee culture, and why making things is often more rewarding than endlessly talking about them.In this conversation, Ryan and Kevin Mooney bounce between ridiculous business ideas, the state of marketing, the explosion of AI tools, creative burnout, networking, content creation, and the future of human creativity. Along the way they debate coffee snobbery, influencer culture, agency life, local community, live events, and why authentic conversations are becoming harder to find online. Equal parts comedy and creative therapy, this episode is a reminder that sometimes the best ideas come from saying yes to the dumb ones first.Find Ryanhttps://www.theroveagency.com/http://instagram.com/theroveagencyhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanwblake/Chapters:00:00 The Birth of a Terrible Business Idea08:48 Burnout, Strategy, and Selling Creative Work18:22 Building Before Overthinking22:59 Coffee Culture and Creative Elitism35:12 Why Conversational Podcasts Work42:58 Real Community vs. Internet Culture53:21 The Content Creator Trap01:02:03 Tactical Marketing vs. Real Strategy01:10:39 AI, Creativity, and Thinking for Yourself01:17:02 Fly Fishing, Coffee, and Small Town Life01:30:14 Building Things That Actually Matter01:49:43 Wrapping Up... and Game of Toes

    #014 — Travis Weaver

Travis Weaver is the founder of Fortitude Fitness Training in Bend, Oregon, and has spent more than two decades helping people move better, get stronger, and stay active for life. His path into fitness wasn't planned. After leaving a successful but unfulfilling corporate career, a life-changing injury forced him to rethink everything—from his career to his purpose. What started as a search to heal himself evolved into a coaching philosophy centered on longevity, intelligent movement, and building confidence through fitness. Today, Travis specializes in helping adults over 40 regain strength, reduce pain, and continue doing the activities they love without intimidation or ego. Summary In this conversation, Travis Weaver shares the unlikely path that led him from selling software in the corporate world to building Fortitude Fitness Training. He reflects on the wakeboarding accident that changed the trajectory of his life, the dissatisfaction he felt climbing the corporate ladder, and why he chose purpose over security. Travis explains how years of coaching, injury rehabilitation, snowboard instruction, and operating multiple gyms shaped his philosophy around movement, longevity, and sustainable fitness. The conversation explores why traditional gyms often fail everyday adults, the rise and evolution of CrossFit, and how Travis developed a coaching model focused on guidance instead of intimidation. He discusses the importance of movement quality over ego, why accountability and community matter more than motivation, and how Fortitude helps adults in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond continue living active lives. Along the way, Travis and Kevin dive into entrepreneurship, building culture, overcoming setbacks, and why the best coaches are ultimately guides—not drill sergeants.
