The Mental Load Chronicles

A suburban family

One couple’s real-time journey to rebalance work, home, and everything in between. We’ve been married for 20 years. We’ve got three kids, multiple dogs, demanding careers—and more mental tabs open than our browsers can handle. We’re not experts. We’re just two longtime partners trying to unpack the invisible labor that’s been building between us for years—and we’re doing it out loud, on purpose, in real time. Each week, we sit down (sometimes tired, often interrupted) to talk through what the mental load really looks like in our home, what’s working, what’s not, and how we’re learning to share the weight more equitably. With honesty, humor, and zero perfection, we’re inviting you along as we figure it out—one messy, meaningful conversation at a time. Expect: Real talk about modern relationshipsBehind-the-scenes of our wins and failsTools, conversations, and messy progressAnd plenty of “Oof, same” moments Whether you’re a parent, a partner, or just tired of doing it all, you’ll find solidarity—and maybe some solutions—right here.

    Disney Has Invisible Jobs Everywhere

Send us Fan Mail Disney has invisible jobs everywhere. Long before anyone walks through the park gates, someone has already compared park hours, special events, hotels, transportation, dining, tickets, and ride strategies. Then the trip begins, and so do hundreds of new micro-decisions. What goes in the park bag? Will it rain? Who carries the ponchos? Does everyone have water, medication, snacks, and a charger? Which Lightning Lane comes next? Where did the older kids go? When should everyone eat? And why does every person keep asking, “What’s next?” When one person holds all of that, they aren’t really on vacation. They’re running it. In this episode, we unpack the invisible work that follows a family through every park day, and the conversations we had before this trip to keep it from landing on one person again. We'll share the planning filter behind our experiment - the framework changed how we approached flights, hotels, transportation, park days, groceries, sleep, and even the end of the trip. The result wasn’t a perfect vacation. It was something more useful: a trip with breathing room, fewer moments when everything depended on one person, and a family that could leave Disney fulfilled. What If We Planned the Vacation Around Mom?

Send us Fan Mail We’re back! We’re opening Season Two with a family experiment inspired by one very familiar post-vacation feeling: “I ran the trip. I didn’t go on the trip.” After our last Disney vacation in November, everyone else came home with wonderful memories. The person who had managed the plans, priorities, questions, and day-of decisions came home needing a vacation from the vacation. (cough, cough...mom) So we decided to try something entirely different. We planned another Disney trip. Not around fitting in the most rides, choosing the fanciest hotel, or squeezing every possible dollar of value out of every park day. This time, we planned around the mental load. Full stop. Could we create a vacation where the person who usually plans, remembers, anticipates, organizes, and troubleshoots everything actually got to enjoy it too? With three kids ranging from six to eighteen and more than eighteen years of Disney trips behind us, we tested what genuinely made the trip feel lighter, what cost more but earned its keep, and what sounded luxurious without reducing the mental load at all. In this short Season Two premiere, we outline a bit about this little podcast experiment and share with you what we’ll unpack throughout the next few episodes: hotels, park days, food, transportation, plans that break, what was actually worth the money, and what we would do differently next time. This isn’t another guide to maximizing Disney. It’s a conversation for anyone who has ever created the itinerary, packed the bags, fielded every “what’s next?” question, and watched everyone else relax while feeling like their head would explode. The trip planner deserves to go on the trip too. This has been a battle throughout our entire marriage, so we decided to see if we could, once and for all, do something about it. Listen, subscribe, and share this episode with the person who always carries the vacation. Have a mental-load story or question for us?
