Ep. 33 - The Nightmare Before Christmas: Dancing Skeletons and a Chaotic Production

Before Jack Skellington ever stumbled into Christmas Town, cultures around the world had been giving death a face for centuries. In this episode of Magic and Myth, host Jennifer takes on the 1993 cult classic The Nightmare Before Christmas, a movie she is happy to admit she has never loved, which makes for an honest and funny look at why so many people do. Jennifer traces the long history of the animated skeleton, from the medieval Danse Macabre and the Grim Reaper to the Aztec lord of the underworld and Japan's giant, bone-rattling Gashadokuro, and how each one turned something terrifying into something you could dance with, bargain with, or even laugh at. From there she gets into the famously chaotic production: a movie that started without a screenplay, that Tim Burton did not actually direct, that Disney would not put its name on, and that nearly came apart more than once behind the scenes. Whether The Nightmare Before Christmas is a yearly tradition in your house or you are just here for the history and the behind-the-scenes drama, this is a spirited, nerdy celebration of skeletons, stop-motion, and the strange magic of a movie that refuses to belong to just one holiday. Ep. 32 - Aladdin: The Diamond in the Rough and the Genie Behind It

Before Robin Williams ever burst out of the lamp, there was the original tale of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp. In this episode of Magic and Myth, host Jennifer is joined by a very special first-time guest, her husband Kevin, to dig into one of the all-time greats, the 1992 classic Aladdin. Jennifer traces its surprising roots in A Thousand and One Nights, the "orphan tale" that was never part of the original collection, the Syrian storyteller who may have given it to the world, and a far stranger, darker version of the story than the one you grew up with. Kevin brings a thoughtful spiritual lens to it all, an analogy about wanting, letting go, and what it really means to set the genie free. From there the three of them get into the good stuff: the wild road the film took to get made, the casting that almost went very differently, the handful of songs that somehow carry the whole thing, and a loving tribute to Robin Williams and the quiet ways he showed up for people off screen. Whether Aladdin is your all-time favorite or you just cannot stop singing "Friend Like Me," this is a warm, funny, and surprisingly deep trip to Agrabah. 00:00 Welcome, with Special Guest Kevin 01:49 First Memories of Aladdin 04:45 The Hero's Movie: Why It Hit Different 07:35 The Origins: A Thousand and One Nights 09:02 The Real Tale of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp 18:18 What Would You Wish For? 23:50 Kevin's Analogy: The Diamond in the Rough 30:55 Why Disney Almost Didn't Make It 37:35 Casting Aladdin: From Tom Cruise to Jafar 44:20 Creating the Genie 48:40 Robin Williams, On Screen and Off 53:55 The Music of Aladdin 01:01:55 Box Office, Backlash, and What It Got Wrong 01:06:50 Sequels, Broadway, and the Urban Legend 01:08:35 Greed, Friendship, and Final Thoughts
