Women's Digital Rights, Deepfakes, and the Divide in Uganda | Blush and Bloom Podcast | Ep. 45

Online safety for women in Africa sits at the center of this episode of Blush and Bloom, where Gigi Kenneth speaks with Yasmin Ahmed, a lawyer working at the intersection of law, technology, and human rights and the founder of the FemTech Law Initiative, a Uganda-based, pan-African effort focused on inclusion, safety, and equitable access to technology for women and girls. Yasmin shares how justice and equality drew her into law and tech, and how a personal mental-health turning point, a workplace issue that forced a year away, pushed her to turn hard lessons into impact and found the FemTech Law Initiative. As she puts it, "the power to change your life, to change others' lives, lies in yourself." She and Gigi talk about women's digital rights as a health issue, because women's health is holistic across mental, emotional, and social wellbeing. They cover the risks around telemedicine and the privacy of sexual and reproductive health data, including period and pregnancy-tracker data, and Yasmin's view that privacy should be part of the design, not an afterthought. The conversation also digs into the digital divide in Uganda, from device and internet access to digital literacy and language barriers when so much online content is English-first rather than in local languages. They discuss data protection in Uganda, including a real court case in which Google was required to register with the data-protection office, and Yasmin's case for privacy by design. They close on AI harms, from deepfakes and voice cloning used to extort to the algorithmic amplification of harmful content, and how hard it can be for women to prove a piece of content is AI-generated. Yasmin makes the case for shared responsibility across lawyers, policymakers, civil society, and platforms, and leaves listeners with a clear message: trust yourself, fight for yourself and others, and remember that progress comes when women support one another. This episode is for anyone interested in online safety for women in Africa, women's digital rights, femtech, data protection, and building a safer, more equitable internet. What Early Femtech Founders Get Wrong About Funding | Blush and Bloom Podcast | Ep. 44

In this episode of Blush and Bloom, Gigi Kenneth speaks with Nandhini Gopal, founder of Femovation Advisory and founder of Femcy, a women's health startup that was acquired by Koto, about building a femtech company without a traditional science background and what she learned along the way. Nandhini shares how her own curiosity about her body and hormonal health pulled her from a career in electronics and business into women's health, and how Femcy evolved from a software idea into a services model and, ultimately, a community. She and Gigi talk about why education and trustworthy communities matter so much in this space, and how founders can bring credible, well-sourced information to women at scale. They dig into the realities of building in femtech: the shortage of commercially ready research, the funding gap that follows anything labelled health or wellness tech, and how to build a business that is both values-driven and built to last. Nandhini offers a candid view on protecting your margins and knowing where you are willing to flex. The conversation also covers how funding and support differ across Asia and North America, a grounded take on AI for founders and why it deserves careful oversight in health tech, and the breakthroughs Nandhini hopes to see next, from including menstruating women in research to better care for endometriosis and menopause. She closes with practical advice for young women who want to build something of their own. This episode is for anyone interested in femtech, women's health, startups, and building a meaningful company at the intersection of technology and care. Rethinking Women's Health Data & What's New at Femtech po Polsku | Blush and Bloom Podcast | Ep. 43

In this episode of Blush and Bloom, Gigi Kenneth speaks with Sandra Machoń, a data scientist with a background in psychology and neuroscience and co-founder of Femtech po Polsku, about building a career at the intersection of data, feminism, and women's health. Sandra shares how she moved from academia into data science and found her way into femtech, and why closing the gender data gap matters so much for the future of women's health. She and Gigi discuss the wave of femtech innovation coming out of Poland, from AI-supported screening to menstrual and menopause care, and what it takes to build a community around women's health tech. They also explore how data and privacy intersect with women's health, why regulation like GDPR matters, and the responsibility that comes with handling sensitive health data. Sandra explains some of the quieter forces shaping women's health, including how the environment and everyday exposures affect the body, and why so much of women's health remains under-researched. The conversation turns to data science itself, how the field is shifting in the age of AI, what still matters beyond the hype, and Sandra's advice for anyone trying to break in. Later in the episode, Sandra reflects on feminism and what shaped her worldview, the future of work, and a book that stayed with her: The Menopause Manifesto by Dr. Jen Gunter. This episode is for anyone interested in femtech, women's health, data science, feminism, and building a meaningful career at the intersection of technology and care. From Paralysed to Extreme Athlete: Rebuilding With Multiple Sclerosis | Blush & Bloom | Ep. 42

In this episode of Blush and Bloom, Gigi Kenneth speaks with Dr. Sabine Seymour — creative scientist, cultural strategist, and founder of Regenerative Punk — about Multiple Sclerosis, autoimmune disease in women, and the future of health data and wearables. Dr. Sabine coined the term fashiontech, was the inaugural professor of Fashionable Technology at Parsons School of Design, and spent over 30 years building wearable technology — starting with body area networks before Bluetooth existed. In 2024, she marked 20 years since her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis, which put her in a wheelchair and left her speech-paralysed within 48 hours. She shares what she did to regenerate her health, what worked, and what nearly killed her. They discuss why autoimmune disease is so poorly understood despite affecting nearly 80% of patients who are women, what data sovereignty in women's health actually looks like, and Dr. Sabine's vision for a bio-based agentic wearable that computes entirely on-device and keeps your health data yours. This episode is for women living with autoimmune or chronic conditions, FemTech and HealthTech founders, wearable designers, and anyone interested in women's health data and personal technology. Building Trustworthy HealthTech in the Age of AI | Blush and Bloom Podcast | Ep. 41

In this episode of Blush and Bloom, Gigi Kenneth speaks with Piotr Zając, HealthTech Director at Monterail and the former founder of Untitled Kingdom, about what it takes to build digital health products that work clinically, technically, and commercially. Drawing from more than 15 years of experience and over 75 health products, Piotr explains why founders need to focus on health outcomes before becoming distracted by new technology. He shares some of the most common mistakes HealthTech teams make, including solving the wrong problem, failing to understand who will pay for a product, and asking users to share too much sensitive information before trust has been established. Gigi and Piotr also discuss the growing use of AI and vibe coding in HealthTech. While new tools make it easier to build prototypes quickly, Piotr explains why health products require more care than many other types of software. They explore the importance of security, accessibility, medical input, cultural context, and thoughtful product design when building tools that handle sensitive health information. The conversation also looks at how HealthTech companies collect and interpret data. Piotr shares why more data does not always lead to better care, especially when information from wearables lacks context. They discuss the difference between single data points and longer-term trends, the limits of wearable technology, and the challenge doctors face when asked to review large amounts of patient-generated data during short appointments. They also explore what makes FemTech different from other areas of digital health. Piotr reflects on his experience working with Elvie and explains why privacy, empathy, clinical knowledge, and strong design are especially important when building products related to reproductive health, sexual health, cycle tracking, pregnancy, and postpartum care. Later in the episode, Piotr shares lessons from more than a decade of entrepreneurship. He talks about making difficult decisions, dealing with the loneliness of leadership, building for patients rather than investors, and surrounding yourself with people who bring skills and knowledge you do not have. The episode also includes Piotr’s perspective on the startup environments in Poland, Europe, and the United States, as well as how culture, labour laws, investment priorities, and attitudes towards risk can shape the way companies are built. This episode is for HealthTech and FemTech founders, product leaders, designers, clinicians, investors, and anyone interested in patient trust, wearable data, responsible AI, digital health, and building products that improve people’s lives. Period Pain, Body Literacy, and the Future of FemTech | Blush and Bloom Podcast | Ep. 40

#FemTech #PeriodPain #WomensHealth In this episode of Blush and Bloom, Gigi Kenneth speaks with Elle McCray, founder of ONYX, a FemTech company working to shrink the information gap between women and their bodies. Elle shares how her own experience with period pain, body confusion, online searches, and difficult doctor visits led her to start ONYX. She talks about why women need better access to credible, relatable information at every stage of their reproductive health journey, from puberty to menopause and beyond. They also discuss how Elle’s background in fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and digital marketing shaped the way she thinks about women’s health. For Elle, everything is connected, from stress and environment to the conversations women are encouraged, or not encouraged, to have about their bodies. The conversation explores why period pain has been overlooked for so long, how shame shapes the way girls and women learn about periods, and why women’s health marketing needs to move beyond unrealistic images, stereotypes, and “pink it and shrink it” thinking. Elle also reflects on what it takes to turn a health problem into a product, how she found the right people to help her build, why community matters, and what it has meant to build in FemTech as a Black woman founder.
