Why Is It So Hard to Rest? Restorative Yoga & the Nervous System with Lizzie Lasater

Why can slowing down feel so difficult—even when we know we need rest? In this episode of The Kelly Healing Project, I sit down with yoga teacher, writer, and creator Lizzie Lasater to explore our relationship with rest, the nervous system, and what happens when we're so accustomed to doing, achieving, and pushing forward that slowing down actually feels uncomfortable. Lizzie shares how her own experience with anxiety and panic attacks shaped her relationship with yoga and eventually led her deeper into Restorative Yoga. We talk about why rest is more than simply stopping or distracting ourselves, how practices like Restorative Yoga and Savasana can help us intentionally slow down, and why we don't have to earn the right to rest.  We also explore what can happen when someone has spent years in a heightened or hypervigilant state and why certain forms of rest may not immediately feel safe or comfortable. Lizzie shares how Restorative Yoga can be adapted to meet people where they are rather than forcing the body into relaxation.  Our conversation expands into functional movement, somatic strength, perimenopause and menopause, boundaries, self-empathy, creativity, and why caring for our own nervous systems can influence how we show up in our relationships and the world around us. In this episode, we talk about: Why slowing down and doing nothing can feel surprisingly difficultThe difference between true rest and distraction Restorative Yoga, Savasana, and nervous system regulation Anxiety, hypervigilance, and creating a sense of safety in rest Why women may need both more rest and more strength as they age Functional movement, perimenopause, and changing relationships with our bodies Boundaries, self-empathy, creativity, and making space for ourselvesLizzie Lasater is a yoga teacher, writer, and creator exploring the intersection of Restorative Yoga, graceful aging, functional movement, and embodied creativity. She has taught yoga since 2005 and is the co-author, with her mother Judith Hanson Lasater, of Savasana: The Practice of Radical Rest. The Becoming Series: Loving Someone Doesn't Mean They Didn't Hurt You

Grief can be complicated—especially when the person you lost was also connected to some of the pain you've had to heal from. Today would have been my mom's birthday, and in this deeply personal episode of The Becoming Series, I'm talking about what it means to love someone while still acknowledging the ways they hurt you. You can miss someone and grieve the relationship you wish you could have had. You can understand someone's trauma without excusing their behavior. You can have compassion for what they experienced while still honoring the impact their actions had on you.   In this episode, I talk about complicated grief, boundaries, childhood trauma, hyper-independence, finding your voice, taking responsibility for your own healing, and what it means to break generational patterns. At some point, healing can shift the question from “Why did this happen to me?” to “What am I going to do with what happened to me?” You may not have chosen what happened to you, but you get a say in what happens next. You can become the person you needed, create safety for yourself, and decide which patterns end with you.   Loving someone doesn't mean they didn't hurt you. And acknowledging that they hurt you doesn't mean you never loved them. Both can be true.  Healing the past. Empowering your future. 💜 Support the show Thank you so much for being here and listening today. If this episode resonated with you, I'd love to stay connected. The Becoming Series: Every Season Has Something to Teach You

Not every season of life will feel like growth—but that doesn’t mean you aren’t growing. Some seasons are about expansion. Others are about slowing down, letting go, setting boundaries, resting, rebuilding, or learning how to trust yourself again. And sometimes, the seasons that make the least sense while we’re living them become the ones that teach us the most. In this episode of the Becoming series, we talk about recognizing the purpose in different seasons of life, releasing the pressure to constantly move forward, and learning to be present with who you are right now. We’ll explore: • Why growth doesn’t always look like progress  • Seasons of expansion, rest, and letting go  • How difficult seasons can reveal patterns and boundaries  • Why we don’t need to judge past versions of ourselves  • Learning to stop rushing toward the next chapter  • Asking, “What is this season trying to teach me?”  • How every decision is shaping the person you’re becoming You don’t have to understand every season while you’re in it. Sometimes the meaning becomes clear only when you look back. You may not be behind. You may simply be in a season you haven’t learned how to recognize yet. Keep becoming. 💜 Support the show Thank you so much for being here and listening today. If this episode resonated with you, I'd love to stay connected. Trauma, AuDHD & Finding Your Authentic Self with Ellie "AuDHD" Capstick

What if some of the things you've always attributed to trauma were also connected to the way your brain is wired? In this episode of The Kelly Healing Project, I sit down with Ellie “AuDHD” Capstick for an open and powerful conversation about autism, ADHD, trauma, masking, self-worth, and discovering her neurodivergence later in life. Ellie shares how receiving her diagnosis helped her begin making sense of experiences she had struggled to understand for years. We talk about the overlap between trauma and neurodivergence, the exhaustion of masking, unhealthy relationship patterns, nervous system regulation, parenting neurodivergent children, and learning to advocate for what you actually need. We also explore the emotional side of finally understanding yourself—the grief for the person you might have been with the right support, but also the freedom that can come from realizing you don't have to keep forcing yourself to fit into expectations that were never right for you. This conversation is ultimately about self-understanding, self-acceptance, and reclaiming the parts of yourself you may have spent years believing were “too much” or somehow wrong. What If You’re Not Self-Sabotaging? Healing the Subconscious with Peter McLaughlin

What if the patterns you call self-sabotage are actually your subconscious mind trying to protect you? In this episode, Kelly is joined by certified hypnotherapist, life coach, author, and Blue Sky Hypnosis creator Peter McLaughlin for a conversation about trauma, triggers, limiting beliefs, emotional eating, hypnosis, and healing at the root. Peter explains why repeating patterns and intense emotional reactions may be connected to earlier experiences, and how approaching those patterns with curiosity and compassion can help us understand what is happening beneath the surface.  Kelly also shares her own experience with emotional eating, fear of being seen, and the belief that she needed to make herself smaller to feel safe.  Together, they explore:  Why self-sabotage may actually be self-protection  How old beliefs influence present-day reactions  The connection between trauma, safety, and emotional eating  What triggers may be trying to reveal  How hypnosis works with subconscious patterns  Moving from self-judgment to curiosity and compassion  Practices that may support healing, including meditation, journaling, gratitude, prayer, and self-hypnosis This episode offers a new question to consider: instead of asking, “Why am I doing this to myself?”, what might change if you asked, “What is this part of me trying to protect me from?” Learn more about Peter McLaughlin and Blue Sky Hypnosis:  https://www.blueskyhypnosis.com/ Support the show Thank you so much for being here and listening today. The Becoming Series: The Way You Speak to Yourself Matters

The conversations you have with yourself may be shaping your life more than you realize. In this first episode of The Becoming Series, we explore why your inner dialogue matters—not just emotionally, but psychologically and physiologically. The way you speak to yourself influences your confidence, your nervous system, the beliefs you reinforce, and even the neural pathways your brain strengthens over time. We'll discuss the science behind neuroplasticity, confirmation bias, and the Reticular Activating System (RAS), while exploring how trauma, life experiences, and old beliefs can shape your inner voice. Most importantly, we'll talk about how healing begins by becoming aware of the stories we tell ourselves and learning to replace self-criticism with self-compassion. In this episode, you'll learn:  Why your inner critic develops  How your brain strengthens repeated thought patterns  The connection between self-talk and your nervous system  What confirmation bias and the Reticular Activating System are  Simple practices to begin changing your inner dialogue  Why healing isn't about perfection—it's about repetition Your inner voice becomes the environment you live in every single day. What if it became a place of encouragement instead of criticism? ✨ Thank you for joining me for the first episode of The Becoming Series.
