34: The Hidden Cost of Trying So Hard to Get Well

Have you ever felt like healing became another full-time job? One more specialist. One more supplement. One more podcast. One more treatment. One more thing to research, understand, or fix. I know that feeling because I lived it. After years of illness, chronic stress, painful life experiences, and worsening symptoms, I became desperate to find the thing that would finally make me better.  I thought I was taking responsibility for my health. What I eventually realized was that fear had quietly turned healing into another place where I was striving, controlling, and trying to hold everything together. In this episode, I’m sharing what changed. We’ll explore:  how the brain learns through repetitionwhy symptom chasing can reinforce patterns of threatwhat allostatic load tells us about the cumulative burden of chronic stressand why nervous system healing often happens through hundreds of tiny experiences of safety rather than one dramatic breakthrough.I’ll also share what this looked like in my own life—because I never woke up one morning suddenly “healed.” Instead, one day I realized: I don’t feel like that woman anymore. Not because every symptom disappeared, but because fear no longer gets to decide what every symptom means. If you’ve been working incredibly hard to get better and wondering why you still feel exhausted, this episode is an invitation to consider a different way of healing—not necessarily by doing less, but by learning to live differently. For years, I thought healing meant becoming someone stronger. What God showed me instead was that healing often begins when we finally stop trying to carry what we were never meant to carry alone. 🌿 Welcome to the Whole She Rises Podcast If you're a high-achieving midlife woman who doesn't feel like yourself anymore, you're in the right place. 33: Why Your Symptoms Keep Coming Back (And What They're Actually Trying to Tell You)

What if one difficult day doesn't mean you're back at the beginning? One of the biggest turning points in my healing journey wasn't becoming symptom-free—it was learning to stop believing that every returning symptom meant everything was falling apart again. In this episode, we're connecting the dots between neuroscience, the nervous system, and the stories our brains tell us when symptoms return. You'll learn why healing isn't always linear, what interoception is, why your brain may be reacting to yesterday's fear instead of today's symptom, and how small shifts in the way you respond can completely change your relationship with your body over time. I'll also share the simple PACT framework that has helped me respond to symptoms with curiosity and wisdom instead of panic. If you've ever wondered whether one bad day erased months—or years—of progress, I hope this conversation helps you breathe a little easier and reminds you that healing is often measured not by the absence of symptoms, but by the presence of hope, wisdom, and trust. Because your body noticed a sensation. Your brain supplied a story. Those are not the same thing. 🌿 Welcome to the Whole She Rises Podcast If you're a high-achieving midlife woman who doesn't feel like yourself anymore, you're in the right place. 32: Why Your Body Can't Calm Down (Even When Life Finally Does)

Have you ever felt like life is finally getting better... but your body never got the memo? Maybe the stressful season has passed. Your kids are older. Work isn't quite as overwhelming. And yet... you're still exhausted, anxious, dealing with digestive issues, or wondering why your symptoms seem to flare out of nowhere. If you've ever thought, "Shouldn't I be feeling better by now?"—this episode is for you. Today we're connecting the dots between chronic stress, the nervous system, and inflammation to explore why your body doesn't always calm down just because life finally does. We'll talk about why your nervous system is constantly asking, "Am I safe?" how that influences inflammation throughout the body, and why your symptoms may be less about your body working against you and more about your body trying to protect you. Most importantly, I want to leave you with one simple shift that changed everything for me. Instead of asking: "What's wrong with me?" Try asking: "What has my body been experiencing?" Or... "What has my body been protecting me from?" That one question transformed the way I viewed my body. If this episode encouraged you, I'd love for you to follow the podcast and share it with another woman who's been wondering why she still doesn't feel like herself. Remember... Your body isn't working against you. It's communicating with you. Stay curious. Trust your body. And let's rise... together. 🌿 Welcome to the Whole She Rises Podcast If you're a high-achieving midlife woman who doesn't feel like yourself anymore, you're in the right place. 31: Your Body is Trying to Protect You

Have you ever noticed that your symptoms seem to get worse after the stressful season ends instead of during it? Maybe life is finally calmer, but your body still feels anxious, exhausted, inflamed, or like it just can't settle down. If you've ever wondered, "What's wrong with me?"—this conversation is for you. In this episode, we're exploring why your body may still be living in survival mode long after the danger has passed.  We'll connect the dots between chronic stress, the nervous system, inflammation, hormones, autoimmune disease, and the cumulative weight our bodies carry over time. More importantly, we'll talk about one mindset shift that completely changed my healing journey: What if your body isn't working against you? What if it's been trying to protect you all along? In this episode, we'll explore: Why your body defines stress differently than you doThe difference between healthy stress and chronic stressWhy recovery—not a stress-free life—is the real goalHow years of carrying too much can affect your bodyThe question that transformed the way I understood my own healingMy hope isn't that you leave this conversation with one more thing to do. My hope is that you leave with more compassion for yourself. Because healing often doesn't begin by striving harder. It begins by understanding what your body has been trying to say all along. 30: The Autoimmune Shift No One Is Talking About | Why I Stopped Chasing Symptoms

Connecting the Dots: Stress, Hormones & Autoimmune Health What if your symptoms aren't separate problems to solve? What if they're all connected? If you've been struggling with autoimmune disease, chronic stress, perimenopause, brain fog, gut issues, exhaustion, inflammation, anxiety, or feeling like your body has suddenly become someone you don't recognize, this series is for you. In Connecting the Dots, we're moving beyond isolated symptoms and beginning to understand how your nervous system, hormones, immune system, inflammation, gut, and stress response influence one another. Because your body doesn't function in separate systems. Everything is communicating. Throughout this series, we'll explore topics like: • The hidden relationship between chronic stress and autoimmune disease • How nervous system regulation influences healing • Why inflammation isn't the whole story • The connection between hormones and immune function • Why so many women feel like everything changes during midlife • Why chasing symptoms often leaves us feeling stuck • How to begin working with your body instead of constantly fighting against it My hope is that by the end of this series, you'll stop asking, "What's wrong with me?" and start asking, "What has my body been trying to tell me?" Because when you understand your body, you stop fearing it. And when you stop fearing your body, healing has room to begin. I'm so glad you're here. Let's connect the dots—together. 🌿 Welcome to the Whole She Rises Podcast If you're a high-achieving midlife woman who doesn't feel like yourself anymore, you're in the right place. 29: What If Your Midlife Symptoms Aren't Separate?

Have you ever wondered if your exhaustion, brain fog, anxiety, gut issues, hormone changes, autoimmune symptoms, and constant overwhelm are actually connected? What if they aren't separate problems at all? In this episode, we're taking a step back to look at the bigger picture. Throughout this first series, we've talked about why so many midlife women suddenly don't feel like themselves anymore—from burnout and exhaustion to midlife rage and why self-care often isn't enough.  But before we move into our next series, I want to leave you with one important question: What if your symptoms have been telling one connected story all along? In this episode, we'll explore: Why your body doesn't experience symptoms in isolationThe powerful garden analogy that changes how we think about healingHow your hormones, nervous system, immune system, gut, sleep, and stress constantly communicate with one anotherWhy treating one symptom at a time doesn't always address the bigger pictureThe mindset shift that helped transform my own healing journeyThis episode is the bridge between our first series and our upcoming series, Connecting the Dots: How Stress, Hormones, and Your Immune System Shape Midlife Health. Over the next several weeks, we'll begin exploring how these systems work together—and why understanding those connections can help you stop blaming yourself and start understanding your body with greater compassion and clarity. If you've ever found yourself thinking... "I don't feel like myself anymore." "Why do I have so many different symptoms?" "Is this just perimenopause?" "Why does everything seem connected?" ...then I think you'll feel right at home here. If this episode encouraged you, I'd love for you to follow the podcast, leave a review, or share it with a friend who needs the reminder that she isn't broken. Because your body isn't working against you. It's communicating with you. And sometimes healing begins when we stop looking at the individual pieces... and start connecting the dots. 🌿 Welcome to the Whole She Rises Podcast If you're a high-achieving midlife woman who doesn't feel like yourself anymore, you're in the right place. 28: Why Midlife Rage Feels So Intense in Perimenopause

Have you ever completely lost your patience over something that normally wouldn't have bothered you? Maybe your husband starts chewing. Someone asks one more question. A simple text message feels like too much. Then almost immediately, you feel guilty for reacting the way you did. If you've been experiencing more irritability, frustration, or even rage during midlife, you're not alone—and you're probably not becoming the person you fear you've become. In this episode of the Whole She Rises Podcast, we're talking about what's often happening beneath midlife rage. We'll explore how hormonal changes can make the nervous system more sensitive, why hormone therapy can be an important piece of healing but isn't always the entire answer, and how years of chronic stress, over-functioning, people-pleasing, and emotional overload often contribute to the emotional reactivity so many women experience. Most importantly, we'll talk about why your symptoms don't define who you are. Because feeling angry doesn't make you an angry person. Sometimes it simply means your body has been carrying too much for too long. If you've ever found yourself asking, "What's wrong with me?" I hope this conversation helps you begin asking a different question: What is my body trying to tell me? In next week's episode, we're beginning a brand-new series as we start connecting the dots between chronic stress, nervous system dysregulation, autoimmune symptoms, hormones, and the many ways our bodies communicate long before we recognize what's happening. 🌿 Welcome to the Whole She Rises Podcast If you're a high-achieving midlife woman who doesn't feel like yourself anymore, you're in the right place. 27: The Hidden Burnout So Many Midlife Women Normalize in Perimenopause & Autoimmune

What if you're more burned out than you even realize? Not the kind of burnout where everything falls apart. The kind where you're still showing up, taking care of everyone else, accomplishing everything on your list... but underneath it all, you're exhausted, emotionally depleted, and no longer feel like yourself. In this episode of the Whole She Rises Podcast, we're talking about the hidden burnout so many midlife women normalize for years without recognizing it. You'll learn why burnout doesn't always look like falling apart, why high-achieving women often miss the warning signs, and why midlife is often the season when our bodies simply become less willing and able to keep carrying years of chronic stress. I'll also share part of my own story—what it felt like to have a life I had prayed for, yet struggle to fully experience the joy and peace I knew should have been there.  Looking back, I realized my body wasn't failing me. It was asking me to slow down and pay attention. In this episode, we'll discuss: • Why burnout often hides behind productivity and responsibility • The subtle signs of burnout many women dismiss as "normal" • Why midlife exposes years of accumulated stress • The hidden cost of always being "the strong one" • One simple question to help you begin reconnecting with yourself If you've been feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, emotionally reactive, or disconnected from yourself, I hope this conversation reminds you that you're not failing—your body may simply be asking for a different rhythm. Remember: Just because you've learned how to carry it... doesn't mean you're meant to carry it forever.
