TREAD TALKS | Nobody's Watching Your Set as Closely as You Think

Have you ever said something vulnerable out loud and immediately thought, “What are they going to think of me?” That's exactly where Vera Ilnyckyj found herself during her first speaking panel. She shared a deeply personal story about divorce and getting fired in front of a room of women—and immediately assumed she'd given them a reason to write her off. But here's the thing about vulnerability: we're often far more focused on how we're being perceived than anyone else actually is. Think about walking into a new gym. You might feel like everyone is watching your form, your weights, or whether you even know what you're doing. But most people are in the middle of their own set, watching themselves. Business can feel the same way. You're worried people are judging your post, your pricing, your story, or whether you really belong in the room. Meanwhile, the person you're worried about may be thinking about their own doubts and struggles. Vera finished that panel convinced she'd embarrassed herself. Instead, women lined up afterward to tell her she'd said what they'd been afraid to say themselves. Sometimes the thing you're most afraid will make people judge you is exactly what makes someone else feel less alone. So before you hit delete on the honest post or hold back the story you really want to tell, ask yourself: What if this doesn't make me look foolish? What if it helps someone else feel seen? Then hit send. 🎙️ Want more on the mental game of starting a business? Listen to the full roundtable with Vera, Judy Murdoch, Lauren Schoenfeld, and me wherever you get your podcasts. The Mental Game of Business: Part Two

You Trained for the Lift. But Can You Sustain It?  Starting a business takes courage. But what happens after you've taken the leap? In Part 1 of this roundtable, Judy Murdoch, Lauren Schoenfeld, Vera Ilnyckyj, and I talked about the mental game of starting a business—putting yourself out there, dealing with self-doubt, and finding the courage to keep going when things don't go as planned. Now, in Part 2, we take the conversation further. As a trainer and athlete, I know that preparing for a one-rep max isn't just about building the strength to make the lift. You also have to think about recovery, energy, boundaries, and what will allow you to keep showing up for the next lift. Business is no different. Once you're in it, how do you protect your time and energy? How do you know when an investment isn't paying off? When do you need to change course? And how do you build a business that supports you instead of slowly burning you out? Lauren, Judy, and Vera get honest about the lessons they've learned along the way—from setting boundaries that protect them from their own tendencies, to reevaluating investments, seeking the right support, and recognizing that entrepreneurship is an ongoing personal development journey. If Part 1 was about getting your mind ready to step under the bar, Part 2 is about building a business that lets you keep lifting. If this episode resonates with you, I'd love for you to subscribe, leave a review, and share it with another entrepreneur who needs this conversation. TREAD TALKS | When Business Feels Like a Threat: How to Recover After Getting Hurt Online

Ever had someone tear you apart online and felt like your whole body wanted to disappear? Judy Murdoch knows that feeling. After some difficult experiences on social media, she described wanting to hide—not just mentally, but physically. Her nervous system was on high alert, and it could take a day or two before she felt back to baseline. Think about what happens before a heavy lift. Your heart rate rises. Your breathing changes. Your body prepares for a threat. Your nervous system doesn't always know the difference between a heavy barbell and a harsh comment online. It simply reacts. And that's an important lesson for entrepreneurs. Putting yourself out there means eventually facing criticism, rejection, or someone who simply doesn't like what you've said or offered. The answer isn't to "toughen up" and ignore what your body is telling you. It's to build recovery into the process. Before your next launch, pricing change, or vulnerable post, decide what your reset routine will be when something stings. Take a walk. Call someone who understands. Step away from the comments for a day. Program the recovery before you need it. In this week's full roundtable episode, Judy Murdoch, Lauren Schoenfeld, Vera Ilnyckyj, and I talk about the mental game of starting a business—from imposter syndrome and self-doubt to putting yourself out there and dealing with the moments when it hurts. 🎙️Listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts. TREAD TALKS: Don't Wait for the Hole-in-One

"You're not gonna get a hole-in-one, that's for sure." That's Judy Murdoch on this week's episode, comparing putting yourself out there in business to playing golf. You don't sink the ball on your first swing. You chip. You hit the ball. It moves a little. You adjust. You hit it again. That's the game. And Judy has spent her entire career in marketing, yet she still says she's had far more misses than hits. If you're sitting on an idea right now, waiting until you feel ready—or certain it will work—you may be waiting for something that rarely happens: the perfect first shot. In this Tread Talk, I explore why starting a business is less about certainty and more about taking repeated, visible action. Your takeaway: Stop measuring readiness by certainty. Measure it by reps. Pick one small action you can take this week—one post, one email, one offer to one person—and let it be imperfect. The chipping isn't a placeholder for the real strategy. The chipping is the strategy. If this resonates with you, go listen to the full two-part conversation with Judy Murdoch, Lauren Schoenfeld, and Vera Ilnyckyj. We get into the mental game of starting a business, from imposter syndrome to putting yourself out there and dealing with the inevitable misses. The Mental Game of Business: Part One

Starting a business is about more than having a great idea, a solid offer, or the right skills. There’s a mental game that comes with putting yourself out there, taking risks, handling rejection, and continuing to move forward when things don’t go according to plan. In this roundtable conversation, I’m joined by Judy Murdoch, Lauren Schoenfeld, and Vera Ilnyckyj to talk honestly about the mindset challenges that come with starting a business. We talk about the fear of being seen, perfectionism, putting yourself out there before you feel ready, learning to expect mistakes, and the importance of having people in your corner. We also explore how your mindset and needs evolve as your business grows—and why the support you need at one stage may not be the support you need at the next. If you're thinking about starting a business, are somewhere in those early stages, or simply need a reminder that you're not supposed to figure it all out alone, this conversation is for you. If this episode resonates with you, I'd love for you to subscribe, leave a review, and share it with another entrepreneur who needs this conversation. TREAD TALKS: Business Boundaries & How to Set Them before You Need Them

Business Boundaries: Set Them Before You Need Them  "The boundaries I've had to set are basically to protect me from me." That's Lauren Schoenfeld, a self-described recovering perfectionist and workaholic, sharing one of the most practical lessons from this week's roundtable conversation. When you're starting a business, it's easy to think boundaries are something you'll figure out later—once you have clients, more work, or a bigger business. But what if you set them before you need them? Lauren never gave clients her cell phone number because she knew exactly what would happen: if a client texted her at 10pm, she'd probably answer. So she built the boundary before she needed the willpower to enforce it. In this Tread Talk, I explore why boundaries are easier to build into your business from the beginning than to introduce after unhealthy habits have already formed. Your takeaway: Before your first client or next big project, identify one boundary you're likely to struggle with—your working hours, response time, or how clients can reach you—and set it now. And if you want to hear more about boundaries, burnout, and the realities of building a business, tune in tomorrow for Part 1 of my roundtable conversation with Lauren Schoenfeld, Judy Murdoch, and Vera Ilnyckyj. We go much deeper into the boundaries they've had to build, the lessons they've learned, and what they'd invest in if money weren't a constraint. Part 1 drops tomorrow. Stay Tuned! Positioning That Actually Sticks | With Krista Patterson

What makes people choose you instead of someone else? If that question makes you freeze, you're not alone. This week, I'm joined by Krista Patterson, CEO and Co-Founder of Positioning Collective, to unpack one of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs face: explaining what makes their business different—without sounding like everyone else. We talk about why positioning isn't about creating a clever tagline or choosing a niche that's painfully narrow. It's about getting clear on the one idea you want people to associate with your business—and building everything else from there. In this episode, we discuss: Why clarity doesn't mean limiting your businessHow to uncover what truly makes your business differentThe gap between what you're capable of and what people actually perceiveWhy your ideal client's mindset matters more than demographicsBuilding a brand that feels authentic and aspirationalHow clear positioning leads to better decisions, stronger marketing, and faster growth If you've ever struggled to explain what you do—or wondered why your marketing isn't landing—this conversation is for you. TREAD TALKS: You Don't Have to Be the Star of Your Social Media

Does the thought of showing up on camera make you want to close your laptop and pretend social media doesn't exist? You're not alone. In today's Tread Talk, I'm answering a question I hear from entrepreneurs all the time: "How do I market my business if I hate being on camera?" The good news? Building visibility doesn't require turning yourself into a full-time content creator. In this short coaching episode, I share a simple mindset shift inspired by years of coaching entrepreneurs—and my experience as a gym owner. Just like the energy of a fitness class comes from the people in the room, your marketing doesn't always have to revolve around you. Sometimes, the most powerful marketing comes from the stories your clients tell. In this episode: Why visibility doesn't have to mean constant selfiesHow client stories build trust faster than self-promotionA simple way to create authentic social media contentHow to show up consistently without feeling exposedIf you've been avoiding social media because it feels uncomfortable or overly personal, this episode will help you rethink what showing up can look like. Remember: you don't have to do this alone. Remember, progress happens one rep at a time — in your body and your business. You don't have to do it alone. Book a free call — link in the show notes.
