    On Freedom

What does it truly mean to be free? Most of us carry around an idea of freedom that looks something like this: no rules, no restrictions, no one telling us what to do. But what if that vision of freedom is actually keeping us from the deepest kind of freedom we could ever experience? This sermon turns our common assumptions about freedom completely upside down. We explore how the very constraints we resist -- our relationships, our responsibilities, our limitations -- might actually be the path to genuine freedom rather than obstacles to it. Just as a musician must submit to scales and structure before they can truly play, and just as a marriage requires us to bend toward another person, true freedom is not found in having unlimited options. It is found in being attuned to something beyond ourselves. The cross of Christ stands at the center of this reflection as the ultimate image of freedom -- not despite its suffering and confinement, but because of what it expresses. When we see Jesus choosing the cross in submission to the Father's will, we are seeing the most profound act of human freedom ever performed. This is a message that challenges us to reconsider what we are really after when we demand our freedoms, and to ask whether the life we are chasing is actually the life that sets us free.

    On Speaking in Tongues

In this catechesis lecture, Fr. Tyler Holley explains the common texts used to support the modern practice of "speaking in tongues". Arguing for the historic interpretation that St. Paul and St. Luke are speaking of xenoglossia rather than glossolalia (gibberish speech), he also addresses the change in "plausibility structure" that occurred in the 19th century that allowed for this new interpretation to seem plausible. The preference for unmediated, personal religious experience was the inevitable fruition of the Enlightenment, which place unquestionable trust in the truth of our own experiences. In the end, he argues that to accept the modern idea of "gibberish speech" as a valid religious experience would be to accept a host of presuppositions that are biblically unjustified, historically unknown, and spiritually damaging. He leaves us with a charitable way of considering the phenomenon using the psychological category of "learned emotional response".
