Ownership Isn’t the Highest Calling — Stewardship Is

Ownership asks, ‘What can I get from this?’ Stewardship asks, ‘What is this for, and who am I becoming while I carry it?We celebrate ownership in business. Own the outcome. Own the relationship. Own your mistakes. Own the company. Responsibility is good. But I’m becoming convinced that ownership isn’t the highest biblical category. Stewardship is. Ownership says, “This belongs to me.” Stewardship says, “This belongs to God, and I’m responsible for what happens while it’s in my hands.” That distinction changes how I think about Arrington Media, creativity, leadership, money, family, ambition, success, and even failure. In this episode, I wrestle with questions like: • Am I building something successful while damaging the people around me?• Am I using the gifts God entrusted to me—or burying them out of fear?• Can I care about measurable results without allowing results to define my identity?• Am I asking for more authority before faithfully carrying the authority I already have?• What would change if I truly believed God owns it and I simply manage it? I also reflect on Patrick Lencioni’s idea from The Motive that leadership is fundamentally about accepting responsibility, and why “Lord willing” doesn’t mean passive planning—it means recognizing that our plans are not sovereign. The question I’m trying to live under is no longer: “How much can I own?” It’s: “How faithful can I become with what God has already entrusted to me?” God owns it. I manage it. And one day, I’ll answer for how I carried it.
