This is such a heartwarming episode. As a Christian woman seeking to honor Christ, I have been disillusioned to believe we all desire to protect our temples from “spice” in what we read. Too many people are swayed by what they consume with their eyes and ears, and it leads to discontent which leads to division, neither of which the Lord wants for His children.
Unfortunately, I think women choose to read “spicy” because they are unsatisfied in their relationships, to fulfill their desires for “romance,” and those books set us up for unrealistic expectations. Some of the books even glorify abuse or, at least, normalize it.
I joined a book club with Christian women, thinking this would be the place to form relationships with women who had Christ at the center of their lives. After reading the sample of the first book, I had to do the same for every book they chose to read. When the first chapter can’t be written without language or innuendo, I know I can’t read the book.
God, Christ, and Holy Spirit aren’t meant to be Elf on a Shelf that you pay attention to occasionally but, instead, the One you trust to guide you in ALL you do—even what you read.
