    San Diego State Can SHOCK UCLA at the Rose Bowl

    I'm planting my flag. San Diego State is going into the Rose Bowl and beating UCLA. The Aztecs enter this matchup as 12.5-point underdogs, but I believe this might be the Pac-12's BEST opportunity all season to get a statement win against a Power 4 opponent. And Colton Poole of The Poole Report isn't far behind me. UCLA certainly looked better than we expected in its 45-24 win over Cal. Bob Chesney's transfers immediately made an impact, and that makes this matchup considerably tougher than it looked during the offseason. But don't sleep on San Diego State. Lucky Sutton is coming off a career-high three rushing touchdowns. Jayden Denegal is healthy. The Aztecs might have one of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the Pac-12. The biggest question? Can San Diego State's defense start faster than it did against Portland State? And can Sutton and this rushing attack have success against a UCLA defense that allowed only three yards per carry against Cal? If the Aztecs can run the football, I think they have a real chance. I'm taking San Diego State outright. Colton believes this is a one-touchdown game and certainly likes SDSU +12.5.     Boise State Can Take CONTROL of the CFP Race vs. Memphis

    The Group of 6 College Football Playoff race could change dramatically this weekend. Boise State. Memphis. No. 1 vs. No. 2 in The Poole Report's G6 Top 25. And we're getting this matchup on the blue turf. Boise State is coming off an extremely impressive performance against No. 2 Oregon. The Broncos didn't get the win, but they took one of the most talented rosters in college football all the way to the end. Now comes another test. Memphis has legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations of its own. Marcus Stokes has shown plenty of encouraging signs at quarterback, Jalen Carter is coming off a massive rushing performance, and the Memphis defensive front has created problems early this season. Can they do the same thing against Boise State? That's where Colton Poole and I disagree. He's taking Boise State to win but Memphis to cover the 8.5-point spread. Me? I think Boise State covers. If the Broncos take care of Memphis after what they just showed against Oregon, it's going to become increasingly difficult to argue that anybody else belongs ahead of Boise State in the Group of 6 CFP conversation. We also dive into a HUGE rivalry game between Texas State and UTSA. Texas State got blown out by Texas in Week 1. But how much did we actually learn about the Bobcats? We're about to find out.     Boise State Leads a VERY Different Pac-12 Power Ranking Following College Football Week 1

    We finally got to see every Pac-12 football team in action. And my power rankings have changed A LOT. Boise State remains No. 1 after taking No. 2 Oregon all the way to the final drive as a massive underdog. I think the Broncos proved something even in a loss. They're still the best team in the Pac-12, and right now I think they're the best Group of 6 team in college football. San Diego State stays at No. 2 after beating Portland State, but the Aztecs have some things to clean up before a fascinating opportunity against UCLA. Then things get interesting. Washington State jumps to No. 3. The Cougars' offense has some MAJOR questions after the Apple Cup, but I came away extremely impressed with their defense. If Kirby Moore can get Caden Pinnock and this offense figured out, WSU's ceiling could be much higher than we thought. Oregon State makes the biggest jump. The Beavers go from the bottom of my preseason rankings all the way to No. 4 after Braden Atkinson showed exactly why JaMarcus Shephard was willing to make the difficult quarterback decision. And don't overlook Colorado State. Jim Mora's first game was an impressive Border War victory, Haase Haney threw five touchdowns, and the Rams might be one of the biggest surprises in the conference. Then we've got problems. Fresno State's offensive line and quarterback situation look even more concerning than I feared. Texas State's defense has a LONG way to go. And Utah State? After losing to Idaho State, I'm legitimately looking at the Aggies' schedule and wondering where the wins are coming from. These aren't standings. These rankings are based on one question: If I had to play these teams right now, which one would I least want to see on the other sideline? Week 1 gave us some answers.     REACTION: Washington State Could Be DANGEROUS If It Fixes This | Apple Cup 2026

    Washington State lost the Apple Cup 24-10. But I came away from Kirby Moore's first game thinking this team might be closer than the final score suggests. Because Washington State's defense? That unit looks LEGIT. The Cougars consistently created opportunities against Washington, made plays in the trenches and kept WSU in this football game deep into the second half. There were missed tackles. There were opportunities to get DeMond Williams on the ground that Washington State couldn't finish. Those things have to improve. But schematically? I really liked what I saw. Trent Bray looks like a fantastic addition to Kirby Moore's staff, and this defense might already be one of the better units in the Pac-12. The problem is the other side. Washington State's offense has to get significantly better. Caden Pinnick showed flashes in his first start for WSU, including 61 rushing yards and a touchdown. But he also threw two interceptions, Washington State allowed three sacks, and too often it felt like Pinnick was looking at his first read before immediately trying to create something with his legs. The traditional running game wasn't there either. Washington State ran the football 31 times and finished with only 100 yards. That's especially surprising considering what Kirby Moore was able to build on the ground at Missouri. Then add two missed field goals on special teams. Suddenly you start wondering how different this game looks if Washington State simply executes a little better. Because the defense gave them a chance. Now comes Kansas State. And after watching the Wildcats put 71 points on the board in their opener, Washington State cannot bring this same offense to Manhattan and expect its defense to bail it out. But I'm also not burying the Cougars after one game. Far from it. If Washington State can get the offense caught up to its defense, I still believe this team can compete for a Pac-12 championship. If the offense doesn't improve? That's when we have a much bigger problem.     Utah State Might Be in BIG TROUBLE After Idaho State Loss

    Utah State might be in BIG, BIG trouble. We talked about the possibility of an upset all week. Then Idaho State actually did it. 29-17. And this wasn't simply an FCS team getting a couple lucky breaks and stealing a game at the end. Utah State threw FOUR interceptions. McKay Hillstead finished 15-of-30 for 178 yards, two touchdowns and three picks. And now I'm starting to have some serious questions about the quarterback position. Bronco Mendenhall says he anticipates Hillstead remaining the starter against Washington. But after what we just watched? Utah State has to figure this out FAST. Because look at what's coming. Washington on the road. Utah on the road. Troy. Then Boise State on the road. I'm not predicting Utah State goes 0-12. That would be a massive overreaction after one game. But if the Aggies play the way they did against Idaho State? I'm having a hard time finding many wins. Meanwhile, Colorado State gave us almost the exact OPPOSITE feeling. What a start for Jim Mora. Haas Haney threw FIVE touchdowns as Colorado State beat Wyoming 35-13 in the Border War. The Rams looked balanced. They forced three interceptions. And after everything Colorado State has gone through over the last few years, this looked like a program finally moving in the right direction. Then there's Texas State. 59-7 against Texas is ugly. There's no getting around that. But I'm not abandoning the Bobcats because they got outclassed by one of the most talented teams in college football. The game that really matters comes next. UTSA. If Texas State wants to escape that six-to-seven-win territory and establish itself as a legitimate Pac-12 contender, that's a game it NEEDS to win.     Boise State Just PROVED It Belongs in the CFP Conversation

    The first Saturday of the new Pac-12 era is officially in the books. And Boise State might have just PROVED it's still the team to beat. Yes, the Broncos lost to No. 2 Oregon. But I came away from that game feeling significantly BETTER about Boise State than I did before kickoff. Maddox Madsen's stat line wasn't spectacular. The running game didn't dominate. And Boise State ultimately came up seven points short. But the Broncos stayed with one of the best teams in college football all the way until the final drive. That's a statement. If Boise State can navigate the Pac-12 without another loss, I absolutely believe this team can get back into the College Football Playoff conversation. And Boise wasn't the only Pac-12 team that gave us something to be excited about. Oregon State LOST to Houston... And somehow I'm more optimistic about the Beavers. Braden Atkinson threw for 376 yards against a ranked Big 12 opponent in his first game at Oregon State. Freshman Jesse LeGree exploded for 136 receiving yards and a touchdown. There are still MAJOR questions about Oregon State's running game and run defense, but after what we watched last season? This looked different. Oregon State is officially out of my Pac-12 basement. Then there's San Diego State. The Aztecs took care of business against Portland State, 53-20. Lucky Sutton scored three rushing touchdowns. The Aztecs ran for 237 yards. And San Diego State's special teams looked like it could become a legitimate weapon this season. But I'm not ready to ignore some of the defensive concerns, especially with UCLA coming up next. It's Week 1. The Pac-12 went 2-5. The record isn't pretty. But when you actually look at what some of these teams showed against quality competition, there's plenty to take away from the first Saturday of the new conference. Welcome to Pac-12 After Dark.     HUMILIATION: Fresno State, Jayden Mandal DESTROYED as USC CLAIMS STATEMENT WIN in New Pac-12 Debut

    Well... That wasn't good. Fresno State had an opportunity to make the first big statement of the new Pac-12 era against USC. Instead, the Bulldogs got absolutely demolished. 39-0. And somehow, the final score doesn't even tell the entire story. Fresno State allowed FIVE sacks. They surrendered TWO safeties. They turned the football over. And the running game that was supposed to be the foundation of this offense went absolutely nowhere. Rae'Sean Luke and Bryson Donaldson combined for only 36 rushing yards. That's a massive problem when you're asking Jayden Mandal to make only the second start of his college career against a USC roster that might ultimately be competing for a College Football Playoff spot. Mandal wasn't good. But I'm also not putting this entire thing on him. The offensive line gave him virtually no help. Fresno State couldn't establish its identity on the ground. And even a defense that I expected to be the strength of this team couldn't do enough to keep the Bulldogs competitive. This wasn't about expecting Fresno State to walk into USC and win. It was about competing. Show us something. Give us a reason to believe this team can become a factor in the Pac-12. Instead, Fresno State got shut out 39-0 and left us with significantly MORE questions than we had before kickoff. Now the quarterback conversation gets interesting. Do you stick with Jayden Mandal and allow the young quarterback to develop? Or does Khristian Martin deserve a legitimate opportunity against Sacramento State or San Jose State? And after San Jose State was at least able to put points on the board against this same USC team, should Fresno State suddenly be worried about that matchup? It's one game. It's against USC. I'm not burying Fresno State's entire season because of it. But this was about as ugly of a start as you could possibly imagine.
