In the thirteenth episode of “Fi El Diwan” podcast, we host the Egyptian screenwriter Mahmoud Ezzat, one of the influential voices in contemporary film and TV writing, whose unique journey began in medicine before he shifted to storytelling. We explore with our guest the behind-the-scenes world of “Abla Fahita”, and how writers’ rooms operate behind one of Egypt’s most iconic satirical shows, and what makes this experience stand out in the industry. We discuss the difference between independent films and commercial films, the audiences each one speaks to, and what Egyptian cinema needs today to open space for more diverse narratives and unconventional scripts. Mahmoud Ezzat tells us how he manages to preserve his own voice amid market demands and production constraints. He walks us through the shift in the Egyptian industry from the individual writer model to the rise of writers’ rooms, and reveals how these rooms function and how a project is built from within. We stop at the experience of “Paranormal”, Egypt’s first Netflix Original, and ask about the challenges of adapting a beloved literary work into a series, the limits of the writer’s authority in the industry, and the ways to protect intellectual property rights. We also open the file of the film “Souad”, which toured major international festivals such as Cannes and Berlin. We learn about the role of festivals in supporting independent cinema, and the dynamics of the Market Place—from selections and negotiations to future collaborations. We then move to Mahmoud Ezzat’s personal journey: from studying medicine, to poetry, to documentaries and cinema, all the way to founding a culture-focused marketing agency, Inkredibles.
