Positive Birth Corner

MaryNissi Lemon

This podcast is for you to feel inspired, informed, and encouraged. Our goal is simple but powerful: changing the narrative around birth one positive birth story at a time. Positive Birth Corner is a space where real stories that shift the spotlight from the negativity surrounding birth to conversation that highlight the power, resilience, and beauty that can exist in every birth! Through honest, empowering conversations with first-time parents and birth workers highlighting black and multicultural communities, we amplify birth stories that are often erased stories rooted in planning, informed choice, cultural connection, and joy. This is not a trauma podcast it’s a space for reclaiming power, celebrating resilience, and making birth visible in its fullness. Each week, we sit down with birthing people, partners, and professionals to share honest, uplifting accounts of birth experiences that highlight strength over fear, connection over chaos, and trust over trauma. These stories don’t ignore the challenges but they do offer a different lens, one that celebrates how people navigate those challenges with grace, support, and trust. Whether it’s a home birth, hospital delivery, cesarean, induction, or anything in between, Positive Birth Corner is here to remind you: birth is not one-size-fits-all, and a positive experience doesn’t mean a perfect one. It means feeling seen, heard, and supported. It means reclaiming your story. Pull up a chair, lean in, and listen to what good birthing experiences really sound like.

How The C-Section I Never Planned for Saved My Life

What if the C-section you never planned for was actually the thing that saved your life? In this episode of Positive Birth Corner, we're welcoming Elvire to share the unforgettable story of welcoming her daughter, Isabella. From a challenging pregnancy with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) that left her vomiting well into 30 weeks, to navigating the uncertainty of a breech baby, Elvire opens up about the importance of advocating for herself and having a doula by her side. After trying everything to encourage labor—including miles of walking, spicy food, raspberry leaf tea, and different positioning techniques—Elvire found herself at 41 weeks facing an induction that stretched into three days. Despite movement, position changes, dancing to Afrobeats, and plenty of patience, Isabella simply wasn't coming. Eventually, Elvire and her husband made the decision to move forward with a C-section, and what she learned afterward completely changed how she understood her birth. The reason Isabella wouldn't descend? Elvire learned that the shape of her pelvis made a vaginal delivery potentially dangerous, and that her daughter may have been protecting them both by not progressing through labor. We also talk about what it means to have a positive C-section, creating a meaningful birth experience even when plans change, and the realities of recovering from major abdominal surgery. Elvire shares her experience with pelvic floor therapy, scar massage, nerve-related discomfort, and the importance of not dismissing postpartum pain as simply “normal.” Plus, we discuss the power of having people around you during recovery, finding community through breastfeeding and mom groups, and giving yourself permission to ask for help. Her story is a powerful reminder that a positive birth isn't defined by how your baby arrives—it's about feeling supported, respected, and finding the meaningful moments along the way. www.positivebirthcorner.com 👩🏾‍🍼 Ready to plan and prepare for your birth with confidence? The Secret to a Positive Hospital Birth? Your Nurse Might Be the Answer

Can your labor and delivery nurse make or break your birth experience? On this episode of Positive Birth Corner, we're sitting down with Cynthia, a passionate labor and delivery nurse and doula who's giving us an inside look at what REALLY happens in the hospital delivery room. From advocating for your birth preferences to helping you avoid an unnecessary C-section, Cynthia shares how the right nurse can completely transform your experience. We're talking about squatting during labor, delayed cord clamping, moving with an epidural, and why your nurse might actually spend more time with you than your doctor! Cynthia also shares powerful stories of helping families achieve the births they envisioned, including one mother whose delivery seemed headed toward a C-section—until a little patience, movement, and advocacy changed everything. But here's the question: What happens when your nurse isn't supportive? We dive into the importance of informed consent, how to recognize a nurse who's truly listening, and why you have the right to request a different nurse when things aren't working. Cynthia also gets real about the relationship between nurses and doctors, what goes on behind the scenes when they're advocating for patients, and why birth partners need to put down the video games and get involved! Through heartfelt stories, laughter, and honest conversation, we're reminding families that a positive hospital birth isn't just about how your baby arrives—it's about feeling heard, respected, informed, and supported every step of the way. Because your birth, your preferences, and your voice matter. www.positivebirthcorner.com 👩🏾‍🍼 Ready to plan and prepare for your birth with confidence? A Birth That Felt Different: Nada Welcomes Baby #2

In this special episode of Positive Birth Corner, we welcome back Nada for an intimate conversation about her second birth experience and the journey of growing her family. Now a mom of two and four months postpartum, Nada shares how this pregnancy felt different from her first, the importance of taking things at her own pace, and how working with her doula again helped her feel prepared and supported. From navigating pregnancy-related challenges and advocating for herself at the hospital to experiencing the relief of an epidural and welcoming baby Selma into the world, Nada reflects on a birth that was a very different experience from her first. With the help of a compassionate midwife, a supportive nursing team, and her husband James, she felt heard, cared for, and empowered throughout her delivery. We also discuss the realities of postpartum recovery, including hiring a postpartum doula, accepting help with meals and childcare, preparing essentials ahead of time, and making space for the emotional transition from one child to two. As a registered dietitian and professionally trained chef, Nada also shares her perspective on nutrition, the barriers that can make self-care difficult, and the importance of culturally inclusive care. For Nada, a positive birth experience means having a supportive healthcare team, people who can step in when you need help, and the space to rest and recover. Her story is a beautiful reminder that support can make all the difference—and every family deserves access to compassionate care. www.positivebirthcorner.com 👩🏾‍🍼 Ready to plan and prepare for your birth with confidence?
