    Exposit | Ep 45|John 18:1-11| The King Who Willingly Gives Himself

    In John 18:1–11, Jesus enters the garden knowing exactly what awaits Him. Judas arrives with a heavily armed force to arrest Him, yet John presents a striking picture: Jesus is not a helpless victim being taken against His will—He is the sovereign King willingly giving Himself. In this episode, we examine Jesus’ encounter with Judas and the soldiers, the significance of His declaration “I AM,” why the soldiers fall backward, and how Jesus protects His disciples by saying, “If you seek me, let these men go.” We’ll also explore the deeper theological themes of Christ’s sovereignty, the Good Shepherd laying down His life for His sheep, Peter’s attempt to fight with a sword, and Jesus’ declaration: “Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” John 18:1–11 takes us straight to the heart of the gospel: Jesus was not conquered by His enemies.     What does Jesus mean when He prays that His people “may all be one”? In John 17:20–26, Jesus turns His attention from the apostles to every believer who would come to faith through their proclamation of the Gospel—including us. In this episode of Exposit, we take a deep dive into Christ’s prayer for the unity of His church. This unity is more than simply agreeing on doctrine or avoiding conflict. It is a unity rooted in our union with Christ: we belong to the same Savior, the same Father, the same family, and the same mission. Jesus connects the church’s unity directly to its witness. We are united to Christ, united to one another, and sent into the world to proclaim the Word. Our love for one another is meant to demonstrate to the world that we truly belong to Christ and that the Father really did send the Son. We’ll explore the passage verse by verse, examining its teaching on union with Christ, the Trinity, election, apostolic preaching, Christian unity, the church’s mission, divine love, Christ’s preexistence, glorification, and the believer’s ultimate hope of being with Christ and seeing His glory. The church is not merely united for unity’s sake. We are united in Christ so that Christ might send us into the world as one people, proclaiming one Gospel and displaying His love to a watching world.

    Every Christian belongs to a theological tradition, whether we recognize it or not. Our traditions, teachers, and confessions can be valuable tools that help us understand Scripture—but what happens when our loyalty to a tradition becomes stronger than our commitment to the Word of God? In this episode of Crossroads, we explore the tension between holding strong theological convictions and remaining humble before Scripture. Doctrine matters. Truth matters. But every belief, every confession, and every tradition must ultimately be tested by the authority of God’s Word. As someone who identifies with the Reformed tradition, I discuss why my commitment to Reformed principles—especially the authority and sufficiency of Scripture—has led me to examine even historic Reformed positions. We will look at examples involving creation, Genesis 6, and the final judgment of the wicked, and discuss what it means to allow Scripture to be our guidepost even when it challenges our own theological tribe. This episode is not about rejecting tradition. It is about putting tradition in its proper place. Traditions can serve the church, but Scripture alone is the final authority.
