This Is Reclamation- Reclamation Part 2: The Art that defines our exhibit feat. Israel Solomon

The Reclamation Building is the "end" of the Promised Land as Proving Ground exhibit- aside from the Reflection cabin. This space holds creations from one of Indiana's premier artists, our own artist-in-residence, Israel Solomon. He joins Easton and Ryan today as they unravel a few questions that surround the Black arts- one such question being if African-American artists are at an automatic disadvantage based on how their art is categorized. We hope you enjoy this walk through inspiration, nostalgia, and the universal elements that both we and Israel want our museum guests to experience through a new lens. This Is Reclamation- Reclamation Part 1: Crispus Attucks- the Man, the School, and the Museum feat. Robert Chester

We are joined today by head Curator of the Crispus Attucks museum, Robert Chester. He has been doing the important work since 1998 and even before- down at 1140 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St.   Background in Crispus Attucks' name and legacy: Crispus Attucks High School was named after the Sailor/Whaler/Dockworker of black and Native American Descent who became the first American killed at the Boston Massacre, thus kickstarting the Revolutionary War. The Black high school completed construction in 1927 amid a great stir; as the Indiana Supreme Court had already made it clear that no-one had a right to stop construction, especially based on personal "fears" or "apprehensions." However, they would get involved if a black student was denied any advantage that other high schoolers in the state enjoyed.

This Is Reclamation- Resistance Part 2: An Afternoon with the Drum Master. Faith and Music feat. Anthony 'Baba Tony' Artis

Easton and Zoë are back again! Our guest today is an African drum maker, owner/operator of Amoah's African Drum Works and Coal Bin Productions. A teacher and artist who has worked with Arts for Learning (affiliate of Young Audiences of Indiana) and a Master Artist with Art Mix (formerly VSA Arts of Indiana). He is the founder and artistic director of Ori Afro Jazz Ensemble and co-founder of Sancocho Music and Dance Collage. Mr. Anthony Artis (Baba Tony) has lent both his drum-making talent and his own faith experiences to Promosed Land as Proving Ground, and today he has joined us to expand on his own experienceds regarding African music, faith, and their retentions and intersections. The name of the exhibit itself is directly related to the "Promised Land"- and how one strives to define it. Biblical references site the promised land of Canaan, the land promised to the Children of Israel mentioned across the Old Testament (Genesis 17:8; Exodus 6:4; Leviticus 25:38; Deuteronomy 32:49; 1 Chronicles 16:18; Psalm 105:11). When people- including our hosts Easton and Zoë- give tours- they often invite people to think about their own ideas of Promised Lands as well as Proving Grounds. So, we now ask: Can both coincide? How can one 'find their rhythm'? How does one come to be an African Drum maker?

This Is Reclamation- Origins Part 3: The Black pioneers of Roberts Settlement feat. Bryan Glover

Indiana's Black pioneer history has been woefully underexplored. Today, we aim to fix that.  Easton, Zoë, and Ryan are joined by Bryan Glover- a descendant of the Roberts Settlement's founders and serves as vice president and a board trustee for the settlement. He has directed the organization's efforts to create the Legacy Walk at Roberts Settlement, an outdoor exhibit about Indiana's Black pioneers. Glover is a retired small-business owner whose career includes many years as a media and entertainment corporate executive in Los Angeles; he has lived in Noblesville since 2007. In this hour and fifteen minutes (give or take) we want to highlight Bryan's work in preserving the history of Indiana's oldest black settlement in Hamilton County; and it's still standing and opened for visitors today!   Roberts settlement website: https://www.robertssettlement.org/ Roberts settlement video:  https://youtu.be/VVms-Ybr2NM Baist atlas canal area research project: https://exhibits.library.indianapolis.iu.edu/CanalCollection/neatline/show/baist-1908?_ga=2.198197167.1252208492.1637290148-1655370499.1636222536#records/127

This Is Reclamation- Origins Part 2: Why we - and America- love the foods we do

Food! It's universal, everyone can relate to it, plus we need it to live. But food has become much more than just sustenance for human bodies. Food is a vibe, an experience, a memory, and even home. And the foods we eat now have origins in places that many of us don't even see. Food is one of "The Four F's- the 4 core facets of Promised Land as Proving Ground. Africa has shaped the culture of the U.S. in ways that many don't realize. Hannah is back alongside Easton and Conner Prairie's own Garden Master and Green Thumb patrol founder Mama Camille! Just because we love food, doesn't mean it's perfect. Stereotypes, misconceptions, and disparities in access abound everywhere. So, let's find out why and how those in history and those descended from them have changed the world around them through foods that you can probably grab at your local supermarket.   Links to additional Sources: Africa in Precolonial times: https://slaveryandremembrance.org/articles/article/?id=A0001  Watermelon: 17th-century painting by Giovanni Stanchi, painted sometime between 1645 and 1672, offers a glimpse of a time before selective breeding- the fruit looks completely different than it doestoday: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/what-renaissance-painting-can-tell-us-about-modern-watermelons-180956155/

This Is Reclamation- Origins Part 1: An Introduction to Promised Land as Proving Ground

Welcome to Conner Prairie's 2nd one and only podcast: This Is Reclamation. Here, we will be reclaiming black Hoosier history and celebrating the permanent exhibit 'Promised Land as Proving Ground' that has meant so much to us. Today, Hannah, Easton, and Zoë are all back under one studio roof to provide an introduction to the series, an overview of some of its themes, and a look into the research process that made Promised Land as Proving Ground a reality. In a podcast like this, we've seen that Problematic aspects arise somewhere during the research process, but we have just as much research to create a celebration of Black history ourselves. That is what will drive 'This Is Reclamation'! Thank you for stopping by, and we'll see you soon!
