Acrylic Paint — What Works, What Changes & What Lasts

We’re continuing the Furniture Artist’s Resource Guide with another paint family: acrylic paint. But as you’ll discover in this episode, seeing the word acrylic on a container doesn’t tell you nearly enough about what’s inside—or whether that particular product belongs on your furniture. We’ll talk about everything from those little bottles of craft acrylic you might use for stenciling to furniture-grade acrylic coatings, including my longtime experience with CrystaLac and their Flip’N Awesome acrylic/polyurethane blend. We’ll also dig into prep, tannin blockers, dry time versus recoat time versus full cure, and why knowing your products matters so much when you’re redesigning furniture. But this episode goes beyond paint. I recently woke up discouraged about my own business, even though I know I’m in the middle of rebuilding and expanding my reach. It reminded me of something my brother told me years ago: “The ones that keep showing up are the ones who succeed in business.” Sometimes the next step isn’t having all the answers. Sometimes it’s learning, adjusting, finding your people—and showing up again tomorrow. There are different kinds of support for different seasons. If you want to connect with other people who love furniture flipping, ask questions, share what you’re learning and build relationships that actually mean something, come find my new Flipping Furniture For Profit Facebook group. If you’re ready for deeper help—the Blueprint, step-by-step training, business guidance, community and access to me when you need help—that’s what Furniture Flipping Blueprint is for. And wherever you are in your furniture journey, keep learning your products. Don’t choose a paint just because someone told you it’s “the best.” Understand what it was designed to do and choose the right product for the piece in front of you. You can find all of it here: → ValFrania.com “Don’t decide the ending while you’re still in the middle of the story.”

Chalk-Type Paint — Loved by Some, Hated by Others, but Still On My Shelf

Chalk-type paint was once the paint everyone seemed to be using on furniture. Annie Sloan changed the furniture painting world when she introduced Chalk Paint®, making it possible for everyday people to pick up a brush and transform furniture without feeling like they needed to become professional painters first. Today? Well...chalk-type paint has its share of critics. In this episode, we're looking at both sides of the story—why this paint became so popular, why some furniture painters have moved away from it, and why you'll still find it sitting on my shelf. I'm also sharing a few lessons I've learned the hard way, including the knotty pine dresser that taught me why I'll never tell you to skip prep, my complicated relationship with wax, and why knowing your products eventually gets you to what I call "no-brainer land." Because the goal isn't to own every product someone on the internet tells you that you need. It's learning what works for you, your projects, and the furniture flipping business you want to build. In This Episode→ Why Annie Sloan created Chalk Paint® and how it helped change furniture painting → Why other brands use terms such as "chalk-type" or "chalk-style" paint → Why I don't follow the "no prep needed" philosophy → The old pine dresser that taught me an important lesson about bleed-through → Why chalk-type paint can be especially forgiving for beginners → Why wax and I eventually parted ways → What I mean by reaching "no-brainer land" with your products → Why a popular or expensive product isn't automatically the right product for you → How understanding your products can save you time, money, and frustration as you build your business One of the hardest parts about learning to flip furniture is that you don't know what you don't know. Sometimes it's the little thing you never even thought to ask about that trips you up later. That's why I created the Furniture Flipping Blueprint—an online manual designed to help you connect the dots and understand the whole furniture flipping process instead of trying to piece everything together from random advice online. → FurnitureFlippingBlueprint.com/join Want to know more about the heart behind the Blueprint and what we're building together? Start with Episode 46. → ValFrania.com/BELONG And you never know...there just might be a fun little surprise waiting for you when you get there. 😉 That's what I hope we're doing together throughout this Resource Guide series. We're not just collecting information about paint and products. We're gaining the understanding that comes from trying things, asking questions, making a few mistakes, and learning what works. And if you're anything like me, you may also gain a cabinet containing one or two expensive products you bought because somebody absolutely raved about them...and every time you open the door and see them sitting there unused, you get irritated with yourself all over again. Not that I hold a grudge or anything. 😏

There Is a Better Way | Better Together

There Is a Better Way | Better Together Have you ever asked, "What's the best paint?" only to receive twenty different answers? You're not alone. After mentoring furniture flippers for many years, I've become convinced that the biggest obstacle beginners face isn't a lack of talent. It's trying to learn in an environment filled with conflicting opinions, random advice, and the feeling that you're expected to figure everything out by yourself. In this episode, I'm planting a flag. I believe there is a better way. Instead of simply collecting more opinions, what if we learned how to think like furniture artists? What if we built a culture where experienced furniture flippers generously shared not only what works, but why it works? What if belonging became just as important as information? This conversation isn't really about paint. It's about community, learning and becoming better together. If today's conversation has you thinking, "That's exactly what I've been looking for," I'd love for you to spend another 13 minutes with me by listening to Episode 46 at ValFrania.com/BELONG. That's where I'll share the story behind why I decided to open the doors wider, why I reduced the cost of joining to just $10 a month for a while, and why I believe belonging should be within reach for more furniture artists. If you've been looking for a place to learn, grow, and belong, I think you'll understand my heart a little better after you hear the story. → ValFrania.com/BELONG "There is a better way—and I believe it's better together." God never intended for us to walk through life—or build our businesses—alone. When we learn with humility, encourage one another generously, and share what we've been given, everyone grows stronger. Sometimes the greatest step forward isn't finding another answer...it's finding the right people to walk beside you.
