Episode 68: The Week After the Funk-Believing and Accepting Are Two Different Things

Last week I left you without a tidy ending. This week I owe you the follow-up. It’s not a victory lap, it’s a field report. The funk lifted in less than 24 hours, and I still can’t fully explain why. But I think the tools worked, and I had to look honestly at what I was and wasn’t doing. I also have a theory that somebody is spraying something in the air. In this episode: Believing and accepting are two different things, and why the trip from the temple to the heart takes longer than the one in my headThe night my Harley’s ignition died outside the gym, and how a trailer, a dead battery, and a short light cord led me to a tow truck I’d already paid forWhy a friend’s plain, logical questions did more than my anger ever couldWhat happened when I asked God for a whirlwind like Job and got a kind man with a tow truckTwo interviews, one Albert, and the question underneath “are you sure?”: am I worthy? Worth was never on the agendaWhether waiting in the silence is faithI don’t have it all figured out. I’d rather give you a small true answer than a big fake one. Everything I share is just how I manage my own life. It may work for you, it may not. Take what works and leave the rest. Thanks for showing up. Thanks for wanting to be the authentic you. Age strong, live long. Good week, God bless. Episode 66-Albert, Check the Screen First (Anxiety)

It’s 110 degrees in Phoenix. Every cooling system in the building is running at its limit, and the people in the operations center are watching the screens and waiting for the first red dot. When it finally shows up, everybody starts running. Chickens with their heads cut off. Then somebody checks the screen. Everything is within spec. The “problem” was a loose wire on a sensor, and a whole building’s worth of manpower had been chasing it. That’s anxiety in a nutshell, and in this episode I give Albert, my anxious brain, a job description. He’s the facility manager. His job is to keep the lights on, which means my heart, my breathing, and the basics. That’s enough. We’ll talk about: Why anxiety is a signal, a red dot on the screen, and not a fireA simple four-step procedure for checking the screen before you actKeeping Albert busy with real work, so idle time doesn’t turn into him grabbing the keysHow a regular Tuesday of walking, a phone call, and a motorcycle ride put it all into practiceEverything I share is just how I manage my own anxiety. It may work for you, it may not. Take what works and leave the rest. If you’re confused about who Albert is, go back and start with Episode 65. That’s my evil plan, and it’s working. Thanks for showing up. Thanks for wanting to be the authentic you. Age strong, live long. Good week, God bless. Episode 65: Albert, You're Just Along For The Ride

Gregg shares what happened on October 1st, when Tucker, his service friend and the dog that saved his life, was put to rest. It was the hardest day he's had in a long time, and in a strange way it was also the easiest, because he got to do it his way, in the time he needed. He walks you through it, including two moments with Tucker he'll remember for the rest of his life. Then comes the day after. The grief didn't arrive as one big wave. It came as little ambushes, and each one brought anxiety with it. That's where Albert comes in. If you've never heard of naming your brain, this episode explains why Gregg did it, how it puts a little air between you and the noise, and exactly what he says when Albert starts to spiral: "This is not how we do it anymore, and you're not in charge. You're just along for the ride." Along the way, Gregg looks at a simple promise he's been turning over all week, that we'll come to intuitively know how to handle situations that used to baffle us. He also offers a practical test for telling a calm inner knowing apart from a loud, spinning brain. If you're carrying a loss of your own, or you're anxious about something you can't control, this one is for you. You don't have to have it figured out. You just have to get through the next hour, and be kind to whoever is talking in your head while you do.
