Meet The Pro: Wildlife Photographer Chris Fallows

In this episode, world-renowned fine art wildlife photographer and conservationist Chris Fallows joins us from Cape Town to talk about the images (and moments) that shaped his career—from the legendary Air Jaws great white sharks of Seal Island to a moody humpback whale fluke years in the making, and a more painterly elephant scene from Mana Pools.  We also chat about how behaviour at Seal Island was discovered, what’s changed in False Bay, and why Chris is now using his print sales to help buy and protect land for wildlife corridors. Plus, Chris shares a guest image he loves by Nick Brandt and reveals where he’d place his “humble dwelling” for a lifetime of photography.  Gallery of Chris’ images: https://pangolin.smugmug.com/SmugMug-Website/Pangolin-Podcast/Chris-Fallows/Meet-the-Pro-Chris-Fallows Connect with Chris Fallows: Website: https://www.chrisfallows.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisfallows/ GUEST IMAGE by Nick Brandt https://www.nickbrandt.com/ https://www.instagram.com/nickbrandt/  00:00 Welcome to the Pangolin Podcast 01:13 Meet Chris Fallows 05:38 1st Image - The Final Act  07:01 Discovering Air Jaws 17:08 2nd Image - Leviathan 23:33 3rd Image - Jumping Shark 26:03 Planet Earth and Air Jaws 30:08 Dubai Airport Conservation Exhibit 31:33 4th Image - The Fig & Elephant 37:43 Guest Photo - Elephant Exodus 41:11 Dream Home 42:42 Final Thanks The Pangolin Podcast was produced and edited by Bella Falk: https://www.passportandpixels.com  Pangolin Photo SafarisAfrica's premier photo safari operator and lodge owner.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Meet The Pros - 4 Wildlife YouTubers visit The Pangolin Voyager

Welcome to Episode 25 of the Pangolin Podcast. Usually, we sit down with one expert, but for this edition week we have a massive crossover event. Pangolin Photo Host Janine Krayer is joined by four of South Africa’s most talented wildlife photography creators: Villiers Steyn, Mark Dumbleton, Lance van de Vyver, and Richard van Haght. The Pros chat onboard the Pangolin Voyager Houseboat, about why a boat safari on the Chobe River offers a very different (and often better) photography and filming experience than a vehicle.  They discuss standout Chobe subjects—especially birds like skimmers, kingfishers, jacanas, night herons, and pratincoles—alongside elephants, hippos, and iconic silhouettes, plus how seasonality shifts opportunities from lush green to harsh dry conditions. The conversation includes practical tips on lens choices, the benefits of houseboat comfort and social space, and recommended timing to visit The Chobe. Meet the Pro: Wildlife Photographer Lance van de Vyver

Host Toby Jermyn welcomes wildlife photographer and photographic guide Lance van de Vyver, a New Zealand-born zoology graduate who moved to South Africa in 2012 and now runs specialist photographic safaris and co-hosts the Safari Shots podcast. Lance discusses trips to Tanzania and Botswana’s Makgadikgadi and possible travel to India. He shares a career-launching black-and-white image of a pangolin being handled by a lioness, explaining the brief sighting and that the pangolin later died from heat and prolonged stress, prompting discussion about stricter guidelines and the Pangolin Guardians program. He also describes a portrait of a captive-born pangolin pup later released, a flash-at-sunset leopard technique and ethics, a black-and-white giant anteater (“broomstick”) in Brazil, and a stitched telephoto lion portrait. His admired image is Thomas Vijayan’s camera-trap photograph of an Amur leopard. Lance struggles to choose a single ‘humble dwelling’ location, considering several safari regions.
