Thomas Markle: Disturbing Discoveries in Mexico and the Philippines

This episode discusses allegations involving child sexual abuse, which some listeners may find distressing. The Daily Mail has reported the Duchess of Sussex’s father, Thomas Markle Senior, to the FBI. It follows the paper’s discovery of a stash of child pornography in an abandoned storage unit three miles from his former home in Rosarito, Mexico. Mr Markle denies the unit is his, and no charges have been brought. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, police in Cebu have been granted a warrant to examine the devices inside four boxes handed over by his son, Thomas Junior, which are alleged to contain child sexual abuse material. On this episode of Deep Dive, Senior Features Writer Guy Adams, just back from Cebu, brings host Chris Pleasance up to date on what the Daily Mail found in Mexico, why the Markles may have moved to the Philippines in the first place, and where the two investigations could go next. Burnham's First Budget: A Survival Guide

Next Wednesday, Chancellor John Healey will lay out the first Budget of Andy Burnham’s premiership. Last month, in his first conference speech as Prime Minister, Burnham promised the Labour party faithful ‘a new social contract for the 21st century’: greater public control of water and energy, a National Care Service and more council homes. Although he was careful to say his plans for Britain stretch across multiple Parliaments, next week his Chancellor has to pay for the first step towards that vision - with the nation’s finances under serious strain. Inflation is higher than in France or Germany, borrowing is £8.1 billion above forecast for the first five months of the year, and national debt is close to 95% of GDP. The 30-year gilt yield, the same bond market measure that brought down Liz Truss, briefly topped 6%, its highest level since the late 1990s. So, with financial markets breathing down Healey’s neck, what can we actually expect? Tax and spend? Steady as she goes? Or something totally unexpected? And what can you do to protect your hard-earned cash? On this special episode of Deep Dive, This Is Money’s Simon Lambert is joined by Political Editor James Tapsfield, fresh from Prime Minister’s Questions, to speculate. A Deal with the Devil? Inside Trump and Putin’s Diesel Pact

Donald Trump caught the world’s press by surprise last week, announcing a shock diesel deal with Russia after a phone call with Vladimir Putin meant to be about a suspected plague outbreak in Siberia. In a Truth Social post, the President promised that 300,000 tonnes of highly coveted diesel would immediately enter global markets, with a further 4.5 million mooted for release in time. Reaction to the deal at home and abroad has been far from enthusiastic. Six senators, four of them Republicans, demanded it be immediately reversed. Volodymyr Zelenskyy branded it a ‘weak decision’, and in the Mail on Sunday, Trump admirer Boris Johnson described the President’s behaviour as ‘sickening’. With the backlash still coming thick and fast, we ask: is the deal worth it? Will cheaper diesel actually help Republicans at the ballot box? And how do Ukrainians feel about their biggest backer bankrolling their enemy? To answer these questions, Chris Pleasance is joined by Chief Foreign Correspondent Andy Jehring, just back in London from Ukraine, and White House Correspondent Jon Michael Raasch. Massacre on Camera: What Iran's Regime Didn't Want the World to See

This episode contains distressing descriptions and audio of violence. For more than eight hours, the crimes Iran's regime tried to hide from the world play out, unfiltered. Snipers aim at protesters' heads and pull the trigger. Machine-gun fire rips through the crowds. Teenagers cower indoors as armed paramilitaries maraud outside, wounded friends bleeding out in their arms. Bodies are left where they fall. These are just some of the scenes in This Is Our Story, a new four-part documentary from London-based Iranian opposition channel Manoto. Built from more than 2,000 videos smuggled out of Iran, it charts the nationwide protests that erupted on December 28 last year over a collapsing currency, and the regime's brutal response, culminating on January 8 and 9, when it cut the internet and opened fire on its own people. Doctors on the ground estimate as many as 30,000 were killed. On this episode of Deep Dive, Chief Foreign Correspondent Andrew Jehring and Middle East Correspondent Natalie Lisbona, who were given exclusive early access to the film, join host Chris Pleasance to reveal who the victims really were and what the footage tells us about a regime that barely clings to power.
