“I Like Artists to Be Able to Make a Living” | Copyright Expert KJ Greene

Professor Kevin J. Greene — copyright and entertainment law scholar, Yale Law graduate, and former entertainment attorney — joins the show to discuss the complicated relationship between artists, ownership, and the music business. Greene breaks down how musicians actually make money, the difference between publishing rights and master recordings, and how copyright registration, licensing, streaming, and record deals work in practice. Drawing on his research into Black artists and the history of the music industry, he discusses how past industry practices continue to influence ownership and compensation today, as well as his work involving artists including George Clinton and Public Enemy. The conversation also explores streaming, AI, artist rights, and what changes could create a more equitable music industry. "Kings Can Never Be Representative of the People” | Pulitzer-Prize Winning Historian Ed Larson

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Edward J. Larson joins the show to discuss his latest book, Declaring Independence: Why 1776 Matters, as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary. Larson explores the ideas that shaped the Declaration of Independence and the early American government, including the role of the states, the presidency, political parties, and the origins of the Electoral College. He also discusses Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, Benjamin Franklin’s famous description of America as “a republic, if you can keep it,” and how the country’s system of government evolved beyond what many of its founders initially envisioned. The conversation also revisits the Scopes Trial on its 100th anniversary, examining the debate over evolution in public schools and the trial’s lasting significance for American law, education, and culture. Drawing on both periods, Larson offers a historical look at how debates over government, education, and American institutions have developed over time. "Life Doesn't End When You Become Seated" | Adaptive Athlete Tara Shetterly on Life After Paralysis

Tara Shetterly — content creator, occupational therapy assistant, and spinal cord injury advocate — joins the show to talk about what life actually looks like after paralysis, and why most people's understanding of it is wrong. At 16, Tara was injured in a car accident outside a Norfolk hospital — a chain of bad luck that culminated in a truck flip at 25mph, a thoracic aortic transection, and a spinal cord injury that would change everything. She walks through what the immediate aftermath looked like: waking up before the paramedics arrived, navigating a Covid-era ICU as a minor with limited visitation, getting denied specialized rehab by insurance, and learning to advocate for herself in a healthcare system she describes as a hellscape for people with chronic conditions. She also talks about building a life and community in what she calls a "wheelchair desert," the gap between how disability is portrayed on screen versus lived reality, and why she started posting online — not as a brand strategy, but out of loneliness. Her throughline: life doesn't end when you become seated. You just have to be willing to flip over every rock to find out what comes next. Professor Andrea Freeman — food law and policy scholar, Fulbright scholar, and author of the award-winning Ruin Their Crops on the Ground — joins the show to discuss how law and public policy have shaped the American food system. She traces the history of U.S. food policy and explores how agricultural subsidies, food assistance programs, school lunches, marketing, and other policies influence what Americans eat and what food costs. "Every 8 Minutes, Someone Reports a Sexual Assault on Uber" | What to Know About Uber's Mass Action Lawsuit

Every eight minutes, someone reports a sexual assault on Uber in the United States. In the Season 2 premiere, Chris and Lauren break down the massive multi-district litigation building against Uber — over 2,700 plaintiffs, a company that internally logged more than 400,000 reports of sexual assault or misconduct between 2017 and 2022 while publicly disclosing only 12,000, and a driver with two prior misconduct complaints who was still on the app when he attacked a passenger during what should have been a 22-minute ride. But just as the legal pressure mounts, Uber pivots — filing a California ballot initiative that would cap how personal injury settlements are distributed, making it economically unviable for plaintiffs attorneys to take these cases in the first place. Chris and Lauren argue this isn't an isolated move: it's the same corporate tort reform playbook used by tobacco, auto, and pharmaceutical companies for decades, dressed up in new language and aimed at closing the courthouse doors before anyone can walk through them.
