Romance is serious business. Romance is revolutionary in its insistence that love is worth fighting for, happy endings aren’t naive, and hope changes us more than fear or cynicism.  I believe in romance deeply. I've believed in it through 40 ghostwritten novels, through a playwright's career, through every time someone has been embarrassed to admit they’re a romance reader or called it a “guilty pleasure”.  Romance, in this space, is sincere and shameless.

    Can I finish my novel by the end of the month? | A Novel Month Week 1 Recap

This week was about picking Draft 2 back up: an outline for Draft 3 underway, two chapters salvaged and rewritten from Draft 1, and more peace with the process than I expected, for now.     Stop building characters, start building their psychology

    A Romance novel is only as good as its characters.     Your dialogue needs a job.

    Welcome to the kickoff of the first *official* season of The Romance Room!  This kickoff episode dives into something I'm extremely passionate about: dialogue.  Dialogue is the emotional backbone of fiction, especially of the romance genre.  However, a lot of romance writers think they're good at dialogue, but spoiler alert: they usually aren't.     Not every love story is a romance.

    When non-romance readers hear a romance requires a "happy ever after", the overwhelming response is, "nuh-uh!" Then the examples come in...making it clear they don't know the difference between a love story and a romance.  Today on The Romance Room, we'll talk about why not all love stories are romances, why the happily ever after or (happy for now) is integral to the romance genre and...
