The Congo Crisis Begins: Dag Hammarskjöld and the UN - Part 1

In 1960, the newly independent Republic of the Congo was plunged into crisis almost immediately after gaining independence from Belgium. Behind the political turmoil were questions of sovereignty, decolonization, Cold War rivalry and control over the Congo’s immense mineral wealth. At the centre of the international response was Dag Hammarskjöld, the Secretary-General of the United Nations—a principled Swedish civil servant who never expected to occupy the UN’s highest office. In this first episode of a two-part series, host Stephen Maika speaks with Professor Henning Melber, a scholar of African history, decolonization and international relations, as well as Senior Advisor and Director Emeritus of the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation. Together, they explore:• Hammarskjöld’s childhood, education and Swedish public-service background.• His PhD in economics and his belief that life was a duty to serve.• The personal philosophy expressed in his book Markings.• His extraordinary work ethic and unusual private life.• How he unexpectedly became Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1953.• The power and limitations of the UN Secretary-General.• Hammarskjöld’s quiet diplomacy during the Suez Crisis and the Korean War.• The wave of African decolonization in the 1950s and 1960s.• The strategic importance of the Belgian Congo and the mineral-rich province of Katanga.• Patrice Lumumba, Congolese nationalism and the international interests surrounding independence.• How the Congo Crisis created the background to Hammarskjöld’s final mission to Ndola.
