Why Does Anime Sound So Good? | Dietrich Dice, Game Audio Sound Designer, and the Power of Bold Simplicity

Meet Dietrich Dice. He starts basic. Ends epic. Ever wonder why the swoosh of an anime sword or dramatic entrances of anime characters sound incredibly satisfying? Dietrich Dice knows what game audio can learn from anime’s distinctive sonic world. Drawing on his professional game-audio work, including Fortnite and Resident Evil 4, Dice shares how studying anime has influenced his own creative process. With an ear for what elevates action, emotion, and even comedy, he explores the power of simplicity and how pushing a sound to its limits can make what we hear when we play much more memorable. Are We Vibing? Feel the Music to Make the Music | Mia Fanelli, Inventor of OHLA, Haptic Technology for Accessible Audio Mixing and Gaming

Meet Mia Fanelli. Now hear how she feels. By translating frequencies into immersive tactile feedback, Mia Fanelli is reimagining how we experience sound—and helping break down sensory barriers along the way. Mia, a neurodivergent inventor and solo developer, is the creator of the Opto-Haptic Linear Attenuator (OHLA) and founder of OHLA LLC. While OHLA functions as a global translation framework that can be applied to any continuous frequency signal, Mia's vision for the technology is deeply personal: to transform how we interact with sound and expand access to musical and sonic experiences for neurodivergent people and beyond. Maritime Travel: The Crossing | 3D Soundscape by Angela Brumett, Sound Designer

Content Warning A sudden, diesel backfire resembling two pistol shots occurs at approximately 0:47. Hello to my dear listeners! This is Angie, your host. I have a gift to share with all of you in honor of annual World Whale Day July 23, the historic day in 1982 when the International Whaling Commission (IWC) voted to introduce a global moratorium on commercial whaling. Close your eyes and come with me. Imagine one place where seaworthy vessels and marine wild life travel underwater, across the water, and through the sky. Whales and porpoises—tugboats and trollers—herons and gulls—crossing paths peacefully. What if YOU could be there—EVERYWHERE? Puget Sound is a deep matrix with a life of its own—it breathes. Some vibrations carry through the water—others dissolve into a padded hush, yielding to a stillness so complete, it hums. Listening Note Please use high-quality headphones in a quiet space to experience the full immersion intended here, including the moments of "silence.” Thank you very much for listening. Enjoy. Production Credit Maritime Travel: The Crossing is a 3D soundscape by sound designer Angela Brumett, originally designed for an ambisonic dome with 45 speakers. It debuted April 28, 2024 for a live audience at The GAME School (formerly the School of Arts, Media and Engineering) at Arizona State University. Software: Kyma, SPEAR, REAPER, and Krotos Studio.
