    Episode 11. Childhood Trauma and Adulthood PTSD Part 1

    Part 1. In this episode, we'll talk about how trauma is completely personal and no one has the right to minimize your experience by comparing it to theirs. Your feelings are valid, and even small events can be life-changing depending on your history and triggers. I explain how chronic stress in childhood can reshape the brain, leading to anxiety, emotional overwhelm, and trauma responses like intrusive memories, fear, avoidance, and sudden emotional reactions you can’t always explain. Many adults don’t realize their current triggers come from childhood experiences. We'll also discuss how trauma can create negative self-beliefs, low self-esteem, and patterns of unhealthy coping—like substances, self-harm, or toxic relationships—because emotional regulation skills weren’t learned in childhood. Symptoms often associated with PTSD in soldiers—irritability, being easily startled, trouble concentrating—can also show up in traumatized children and teens, but are often mistaken for “normal” behavior. Finally, I introduce ACE’s (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and explain how events like abuse, neglect, addiction in the home, or losing a parent can have lifelong emotional, psychological, and even physical health effects. Even if you don’t remember the trauma, your body and brain often still carry it.

    10. Purging of Things

    This episode explores the transformative power of decluttering in creating a calm, comforting home environment. Speaking from the perspective of a sophisticated country mama, it highlights practical, down-to-earth strategies for purging excess belongings — from stopping the habit of buying extra storage bins, to decluttering one space at a time, using the two-week “forget-it” box, letting go of outdated medications, digitizing kids’ artwork, and eliminating true garbage (and the “should-be” garbage). The episode also addresses the emotional tug-of-war between keeping items “just in case” and wanting a peaceful, uncluttered home. It touches on societal influences like consumer culture, pandemic-era scarcity mentality, and the dopamine rush of buying. A significant focus is placed on involving children: modeling healthy decluttering habits, teaching them not to hoard, helping them celebrate clean space, and donating to others. By guiding kids through purging their things with intention and ownership, families learn that they don’t need everything — just what’s loved, useful, and meaningful. Ultimately, the message is this: decluttering simplifies life, restores sanity, and brings clarity to the home — turning chaos into comfort, room by room. I was all set to dive into Jean Piaget and child development, but life had other ideas when my youngest turned six, rolled her ankle, and sent us on an unexpected adventure through hospital hallways and X-rays. Instead of shelving the episode completely, I decided to lean into what motherhood really teaches us: how to bend when things don’t go as planned. From shifting gears midweek to comforting a hurting child, we talk about flexibility — in both parenting and life — and how modeling that adaptability helps our kids grow creative, resilient hearts. This episode is a reminder that motherhood isn’t about being perfect or staying on schedule. It’s about staying grounded, being present, and finding grace in the messy, unpredictable moments. Because sometimes the best lessons aren’t found in theories — they show up in the detours, the late nights, and the quiet strength we never knew we had.
