The Community Optimist

Janet King

Community used to be built in - church, neighborhood, workplace. Now it's optional and often on us as individuals to create it. And honestly? That can feel overwhelming. But I believe this shift is actually inviting us into something better - a way of connecting that's more conscious, more intentional, more real than what came before. It just requires us to build some new muscles. I'm Janet, and I've spent the last decade helping people connect and studying what actually works when it comes to building community in the modern world. This podcast is me sharing what I've learned - the insights that aren't really out there, the things I wish someone had told me, the practices that help me stay hopeful about myself and other people. Think of this as a place where we can feel optimistic about connection, even when the world feels chaotic, divided, and isolating. Where we remember that meaningful relationships are what make a great life - and building them is still possible. It just looks different now. If you're craving deeper community and want to understand how to actually build it in today's world - welcome to The Community Optimist. Questions? Insights? Reactions? SOCIAL STUDIES: Carey Fountain

What does it look like to build a social life around people who actually know you — not the version you're performing? Carey Fountain has thought a lot about this. In this "Social Studies" interview, we talk to Carey, a Birmingham artist, musician, and creator of Wild Card, who went from a shy kid to someone who genuinely believes we have more in common with each other than we think. Now, he's dedicated his career and creative pursuits to exploring how we take more social risks with one another. We talk about vulnerability in male friendships, what "real" even means anymore, and why he thinks the thing making you most uncomfortable might be exactly where you're supposed to go.  On Substack: https://open.substack.com/pub/thegatheringlab/p/social-studies-carey-fountain? SOCIAL STUDIES: Ruth Ann Moss

Welcome to The Community Optimist! In our first ever "Social Studies" interview, I sit down with Ruth Ann Moss — a Birmingham mom, serial host, and local leader who has built a genuinely connected life with a lot of intention through some major life changes. After divorce and new motherhood reshaped her world, Ruth Ann got creative about finding that "full table" feeling. In this conversation, we talk about how she hosts often without it taking over her life, what she learned from trying to have someone over for dinner every single week, and why she's decided to stop keeping score in friendships. Plus — why Facebook Marketplace is giving her hope right now. Get ready to feel inspired by Ruth Ann's warmth, wisdom, and intention when it comes to finding connection in today's world.  https://thegatheringlab.substack.com/p/social-studies-ruth-ann-moss Social Studies is a recurring series on The Community Optimist where we pull back the curtain on real people's social lives - the ways they gather, the people who matter to them, and what the heck they do on a Saturday night - to help us feel more hopeful about the future of how we connect.  Want to be part of the conversation? Stuck at Acquaintance-Level? The Key To Building Close Friendships in Today's World (It's Not Just Chemistry)

One of the most common frustrations we hear at The Gathering Lab - "I know plenty of acquaintances but I want closer friendships...how do I find my people?"  I get it - You've joined the clubs. You've done the coffee chats. You've taken initiative. And somehow, you're still stuck at surface level — or you're always the one reaching out. This episode is about why that happens and why it's probably not about you. We dig into the research on how long it actually takes to build a close friendship, why so many connections stall out before they get there, and what I've started calling the alignment question — the new factor in friendship-building that has nothing to do with chemistry. Plus: how to tell the difference between someone who genuinely can't meet you where you are right now versus someone who just might need a different kind of nudge.  Questions? Insights? Reactions? The Invitation to Awaken: Why Building Community Starts with You

Here's what typical friendship advice doesn't tell you: we're all walking around dysregulated right now. Exposed to global chaos, fast-paced lives, constant information - our nervous systems are scanning for threat. And we're bringing that heightened, guarded state to every interaction. Today I'm sharing why you can't build community from dysregulation - and what I've discovered about tending to your inner world first. This isn't just self-care. It's the prerequisite for everything else. I'm talking about my own practice (morning pages), what I've witnessed at The Gathering Lab, and why this moment is actually inviting us to something deeper: becoming more conscious, more awake, more aligned. As the macro gets overwhelming, going micro becomes essential. Want to more genuine connection in your life this year? Why do our interactions feel so surface-level these days? Here are the top reasons

You're not imagining it - our social lives really do feel more surface-level than they used to. In Episodes 1 and 2, we covered why community matters and the 3-part formula for meaningful connection. Today, we're looking at what's actually changed that's making real connection so much harder. Spoiler: it's not you. There are massive forces working against us - from our jacked-up nervous systems to our phones interrupting every vulnerable moment to the complete loss of shared rhythms that used to bring us together. If you've been feeling like building community is impossible right now, this episode will help you see it's not personal failure - it's a paradigm shift. And once you understand what's happening, you can start working with it instead of against it. Starting next episode, we shift into the practices that actually help."  Want to more genuine connection in your life this year? The 3-Part Formula for Making a Meaningful Connection

Ever wonder why some friendships just click while others fizzle out? Turns out, meaningful connection requires more than just "vibing" with someone. In this episode, I'm breaking down the three essential ingredients that every strong connection needs to grow—affinity, vulnerability, and proximity.  We'll look at why friendship felt so easy in college (hint: all three elements were built into your daily life) and set the stage for understanding why traditional advice like "just join a book club" isn't cutting it anymore. My hope is this episode helps you to start applying this formula in your life so that you can build deeper connections with those around you.  Want to more genuine connection in your life this year?
