Listen Again: Finding your friends in college

Two generations - one converation, and this one feels full circle. In our very first episode of The Social Dialogue Podcast, we talked about something every college student (and every parent) struggles with… finding your people. Jenna was a freshman, in the thick of it. The uncertainty, the friend groups that didn’t stick, the feeling of being left out, and the question everyone quietly asks themselves… will I find my friends? Now, as Jenna prepares to graduate from college in early May, we’re rerunning this episode with a completely different perspective. Because she did. She found her people. Real friendships. The kind that last beyond college. The kind she searched for her entire childhood.  In this episode, Jenna shares what those early days were really like, how she navigated the ups and downs of friendships in college, and what helped her ultimately find the right circle. Her advice for current college freshmen is honest, practical, and reassuring. Shane brings in the parent perspective, talking about how hard it is to let go, what parents get wrong during that first year, and why stepping back is often the best thing you can do. If you’re a college student trying to figure out where you fit in, or a parent watching your child go through it, this conversation will hit home.  Because finding your people takes time. But when you do, it’s everything. Marketing Yourself as a Marketer, with guest Amy Fair

Two generations, one conversation—and this one hits at exactly the right time. In this episode of The Social Dialogue Podcast, Shane and Jenna sit down with content strategist and marketer Amy Fair to talk about something that’s very real for both Gen Z and Gen X right now: the job search. Jenna is preparing to graduate college and step into the workforce. Amy is navigating her next opportunity after a contract role. Different stages, same challenges - and a lot of honest insight in between. Amy shares what it actually looks like to job hunt in today’s market, from building a standout portfolio to showing up online in a way that attracts opportunities. Jenna brings the perspective of a soon-to-be graduate trying to break through the noise. And Shane does what she does best - connecting the dots, asking the questions, and (yes) helping open doors. This episode covers the real stuff:  Why portfolios matter more than resumes in marketing and creative fields  How to stand out when “everyone has experience”  What to post (and what not to post) on LinkedIn during a job search  The importance of networking - and how to do it without being transactional  Using your connections (yes, even your parents) the right way  How to quickly learn a brand voice when you start a new role  Why consistency and personal branding are a long game, not a quick fix Amy also shares her own experience navigating a long job search, how she stayed visible and positive online, and the small actions that made a big difference along the way.  If you’re a college student, recent graduate, parent of one, or honestly anyone thinking about their next move, this episode will feel very familiar—and hopefully a little bit helpful. Listen again: Confidence in the social world - with guest Leslie Randolph

What does it actually take to build real self-confidence in today’s world - especially for teen girls growing up on social media? In this episode of The Social Dialogue, Shane and Jenna sit down with Leslie Randolph, a self-confidence coach for teenage girls, to talk about what confidence really looks like behind the scenes - and why it has nothing to do with perfection. Leslie breaks down how confidence isn’t something you’re born with, it’s something you build. Through small, intentional actions, self-awareness, and a willingness to be uncomfortable, teen girls (and honestly, all of us) can start to trust themselves in a much deeper way. This conversation hits on the real pressures Gen Z is facing - from comparison culture on social media to the constant need to “have it all together," and why those pressures are actually getting in the way of confidence, not building it. Shane and Jenna bring the Gen X and Gen Z perspectives to the conversation, digging into how mothers and daughters can better understand each other when it comes to self-esteem, independence, and growing up in a digital world. If you’re raising a daughter, are a teen navigating confidence, or just someone trying to feel more grounded in who you are, this episode will resonate. What We Cover in This Episode:  Why self-confidence is built, not inherited  The real impact of social media on teen self-esteem  How perfectionism quietly destroys confidence  What “deliberate discomfort” looks like in real life  The role of self-awareness in building trust with yourself  How Gen X and Gen Z view confidence differently  Conversations mothers and daughters should be having Keywords (for search): teen self-confidence, confidence for girls, Gen Z confidence, self-esteem and social media, raising confident daughters, mother daughter podcast, Gen X Gen Z podcast, personal growth, teenage coaching, self-awareness Connect with our guest, Leslie Randolph:  https://www.confidencecoachforgirls.com/ https://www.instagram.com/the_coach_chronicles/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/leslie-randolph-b837bb191/ https://www.facebook.com/CoachChronicles/ Listen to her podcast, "Why Didn't They Tell Us": https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/why-didnt-they-tell-us/id1656153036 Looking to up your social media marketing efforts? The Gift of Roots and Wings, with guest Lauren Popkin Herschthal

In this episode of The Social Dialogue Podcast, Shane and Jenna sit down with Lauren Popkin Herschthal, third-generation owner and director of Blue Star Camps, to talk about one of the most formative experiences in a young person’s life: sleepaway camp. From building independence to navigating parenting in a hyper-connected world, this conversation explores why stepping away from screens and into real-life community may be more important than ever.  Lauren shares insights from decades of experience working with kids and families, including how camp helps develop resilience, confidence, and emotional strength. The conversation also dives into the growing challenges of modern parenting, from “helicopter” tendencies to the difficulty of letting kids struggle and grow. Shane brings a deeply personal perspective, reflecting on sending her own children to Jewish sleepaway camp and how it shaped their independence, identity, and lifelong friendships, especially since she sent her children to the same camp she attended (as did Jenna's grandmother!). Together, they explore the unique role of Jewish camp in building community, belonging, and values that extend far beyond the summer. You’ll also hear:  Why unplugging from technology improves mental health and connection  How camp prepares kids (and parents) for the transition to college  The difference between discomfort and danger—and why it matters  What kids really gain from being away from home  The balance of being both a parent and a leader in a family business  A behind-the-scenes look at camp traditions, from Color War to care packages Whether you’re a parent thinking about camp, a recent grad navigating independence, or just someone nostalgic for summers that shaped you, this episode is a reminder that growth often happens when we step outside our comfort zones. Purpose-driven Storytelling, with guest Anh Nguyen

In this episode of The Social Dialogue Podcast, Shane and Jenna sit down with marketing strategist and founder of Amplified Marketing, Anh Nguyen, for a conversation that blends storytelling, strategy, and purpose in today’s social media landscape. Anh’s journey - from her parents’ beginnings in a Vietnamese refugee camp to building a purpose-driven marketing business - shapes how she helps brands show up with clarity, authenticity, and impact.  Together, they explore what “content” actually means (and why so many businesses get it wrong), how social media strategy differs in B2B vs. consumer spaces, and why brand awareness and thought leadership are often more powerful than chasing constant leads.  The conversation also dives into one of the biggest shifts happening right now: purpose-driven business. Anh shares why companies - especially for-profit brands - can no longer treat purpose as optional, and how Gen Z and Millennials are reshaping buying decisions with values, expectations, and accountability.
