    Defining Your Core Problem Statement

In this episode of The Missing Kei, Edie Woelfle discusses the importance of staying focused in product development by having a clear core problem statement. The core problem statement guides the product's mission and serves to prevent 'feature bloat', the addition of unnecessary features that can lead to confusion and wasted resources. Edie provides a formula for creating a clarity-inducing problem statement which enumerates the 'who, what, and why' - the specific group the product is aimed at helping, the outcome they need, and the reason why they need it. With emphasis on being specific, avoiding vagueness and resisting the urge to jump to solutions, Edie underscores the need for every new feature to directly address the core problem. A practical example highlighting an $80,000 wasted feature serves as a warning case to further strengthen the presented theory. Edie then encourages listeners to test out their core problem statement for clarity and relevance. A to Z Tech Terms for First-Time Founders | Keiboarder

    Real Problem vs. Nice-to-Have Solution

In this episode of The Missing Kei, host Edie Woelfle explores the crucial step of prioritizing features when building apps, emphasizing the clear differentiation between 'must-haves' and 'nice-to-haves'. She likens these concepts to a sandwich, where must-haves are the essential bread and fillings that define the sandwich, while the nice-to-haves are like the condiments, adding flavor and variety but not necessary for the basic function of the sandwich. Edie further advises on focusing and investing primarily in the must-haves (core features) during the initial stages of app development, creating an MVP, testing the functionality, and then gradually incorporating the nice-to-haves based on user feedback and actual needs. The episode also discusses the importance of a well-planned roadmap and includes strategies to prevent distraction by 'shiny objects' or features that may seem attractive but do not directly contribute to the core function of the app. Edie successfully provides a framework to help startups turn tech chaos into a structured product development process, ensuring financial solvency and eventuality of product launch. What's an MVP and Why Do You Need One?

In this episode of "The Missing Kei", Edie Woelfle explains the concept, benefits, and process of building Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) for startups. She highlights the vast savings in time and money startups can achieve by beginning with a simplified version of their product, using it to learn about user needs, and scaling accordingly. The podcast delves into the steps to build an MVP, including defining the main problem, outlining key features, assembling the right team, setting up a simple process, and incorporating analytics from day one. Woelfle also discusses common mistakes startups make, such as opting for cheaper, low-quality MVP construction and failure to implement processes early on. Furthermore, she emphasizes the concept of MVPs through examples of real-life successful companies, like Amazon, Twitter, and Dropbox, that began their journey with an MVP. The episode wraps up with a comprehensive MVP checklist that aid listeners in effectively maneuvering the tech world. The "We'll Fix It Later" Trap

Edie Woelfle, the Fractional CTO and Founder of Keiboarder, discusses the cost of shortcuts in software development in this episode of 'The Missing Kei'. She explains how "fix it later" is the go-to phrase of many developers, which often results in a range of problems known as technical debt. Using a house without a foundation as an analogy, Edie explores how skipping critical steps in development leads to recurrent issues, thereby stifling growth. She also narrates a cautionary tale about a startup that paid heavily by skipping tests for complex calculations in its product. She advocates for building a system right the first time, even if simple, and provides practical tips to avoid falling into this trap, such as automated testing, proper documentation, planning for growth, and concertedly focusing on core problems. She teases the topic for the next episode about the crucial aspect of product development: 'What's an MVP and Why Do You Need One?' Edie signs off by encouraging listeners to keep their tech tidy and their shortcuts short-lived. Why Your Tech Team Needs More Than Just Engineers

In this episode of the podcast, The Missing Kei, hosted by Edie Woelfle, the focus is on the importance of not just hiring great developers but also incorporating three key support roles in a startup's tech team. Using the analogy of building a house, Edie explains that developers are like skilled carpenters, but to effectively build a "house" or application, additional roles such as the architect (product owner), the foreman (project manager), and inspector (quality assurance team) are essential. The product owner defines the project's objectives, the project manager ensures smooth execution and timeline, and the quality assurance team checks for bugs and issues. By having a well-rounded team, successful and cost-effective software can be built without developers being tied up in tasks outside their core competency. Edie warns against waiting until the business scales up to incorporate these roles as problems could have already arisen. What is a Product Owner? 5 Paid Tools Worth Every Penny for Tech Leaders

In this episode of The Missing Kei, host Edie Woelfle explores the value of investing in paid tech tools over free ones for startups. Focusing on five tools, Hotjar, Marker.io, Autify, Canny, and Sentry, Edie emphasizes how each tool enhances a different aspect of product development, from tracking user interaction to debugging, testing, feature prioritization, and error detection. She highlights how these tools can transform teams into more efficient units while also improving user experience and in turn, product success. By investing in these, startups can relatively save more time and money, which should be seen as a valuable return of investment rather than just expenditure.
