The Party Line Podcast

Victorian Socialists

This is a podcast by members of the Socialist Party in Naarm (Melbourne). We hope to bring a radical perspective to a podcast landscape dominated by insipid liberalism (looking at you, The Daily). The pod will come out weekly, and aims to breakdown news and current events from a socialist point of view. While a lot of what’s going on in the world is fairly bleak, The Party Line will try and highlight voices of resistance and struggle. If you like what you hear, please subscribe on whatever podcast service you use, and share it with your friends, colleagues and comrades. We will always release our shows for free, to make sure everyone who wants to listen can do so. But if you are in a position to support us financially then sign up at patreon.com/thepartyline.  If you find yourself agreeing with the pod more often than not, please consider signing up to join your local branch of the Socialist Party at socialists.org.au. We need your help to build a fighting socialist movement in this country, one that can take on both the far right and its centrist enablers such as Albanese. The Party Line is definitely NOT authorised by C Oakley, PO Box 243 Canberra. The Party Line on how the Palestine movement turned the tables on Herzog and Albanese ft. Jasmine Duff

Episode 25 - The Party Line on how the Palestine movement turned the tables on Herzog and Albanese The gang brought Jasmine Duff back on to talk about the incredible week of protest that we’ve just had. Anthony Albanese, Penny Wong and co thought they could tour around the President of Israel as if he hadn’t just been involved in a genocide, but they were proven wrong, thanks to the actions of tens of thousands of people across Australia, who took to the streets in big numbers. We discuss the national spread, the aftermath of the police riot in Sydney, the despicable commentary of Karl Stefanovic (Australia’s answer to Tucker Carlson), and how people refused to be intimidated out of protesting this monster.   Huge thanks to our tireless editors Charlie Wardrop and Persephone Waxman. While we will always release our content for free, please support us on patreon if you can. ***************** This is a podcast by members of the Socialist Party in Naarm (Melbourne). The Party Line on the Horrible History of Angus Taylor

Episode 24 - The Party Line on the horrible history of Angus Taylor Australia’s “most qualified idiot” has just become the leader of the Coalition, and a lot of people are wondering who he is. The Party Line is here to help. We do a deep dive into the history of this man, including his lowly upbringing on an enormous sheep station, the many challenges he overcame as a boarder at Kings College and Oxford, his joy at becoming a partner at McKinsey consultancy firm, and his eventual rise to the top of Australia’s most dysfunctional and despised political party. Plus why Hastie decided to hold fire, and what is in store for Victoria with Pauline Hanson polling at more than 20%. Huge thanks to our tireless editors Charlie Wardrop and Persephone Waxman. 3. The Party Line on Minns' police riot in Sydney

The Party Line on Minns' police riot in Sydney

Episode 23 - The Party Line on Minns’ police riot in Sydney We know we just released an episode but politics in Australia is moving fast. Anneke attempts to take on Jordy’s role as the tech director (and fails).  NSW police conducted a riot in Sydney at the demonstration against Israeli President Isaac Herzog. People were battered, punched, pepper spayed, charged and arrested. It was a violent, brutal attack on people exercising their right to protest. It was like Trump’s ICE gestapo left Minneapolis for Sydney (organised by the Labor Party!). We speak to Josh Lees from NSW Socialists and Palestine Action Group, who discusses the attempts to push back against the Minn’s government. We then talk to Ghaith Krayem, the national spokesperson for Muslim Votes Matter about the increase of Islamophobia directed at the muslim community.  We finish with an argument for people to continue the movement to stand for a liberated Palestine, and an end to the genocide in Gaza.  Thanks so much for listening to the podcast - like and subscribe!  Huge thanks to our tireless editors Charlie Wardrop and Persephone Waxman. The Party Line on the resistance to Herzog visit and The Epstein Files

Episode 22 - The Party Line on the resistance to Herzog visit and The Epstein Files  Omar is looking dashing this episode, with a bright vest to cheer us up. Speaking of cheer, we take a look at the excellent fighting skills of young kids in America against a racist MAGA man. With Herzog touching down in Australia on Monday, the crew discuss the repression coming from NSW police, the massive protests expected to take place and the role Socialist Party members across the country have played in organising and promoting the actions. We then hear from WAsoc member Clare Francis about the successful party conference in Perth. Finally, the team then discusses the vile Epstein files and what it shows you about the nature of the ruling class under capitalism. In particular we look at Lord Mendelson, Bill Clinton, Noam Chomsky and Ehud Barak. Stay tuned to the end for some book recommendations to help fuel the fight against women’s oppression.  Headlines:  Bunnings tiny homes: Hardware giant to sell $45,000 studios amid housing crisis Private schools: Should Australian taxpayers subsidise high-fee institutions? ‘Have a smarter baby’: Australians choosing embryos for IQ, height and hair colour  Taylor forces plan spill this week as Hume savages Ley Immigration crisis triggers rate hike shock  Recommended readings:  Rebel Women, Ed. The Party Line on Herzog’s visit and the resist-able rise of One Nation ft Jasmine Duff

Episode 21 - The Party Line on Herzog’s visit and the resist-able rise of One Nation ft Jasmine Duff This ep starts by returning to the US rebellion against ICE, which has now expanded to the national scale via the January 30 day of action. Cities across the country were shut down due to street protests, student walkouts, and various types of legal and wildcat (that is, illegal!) strike actions against ICE and the Trump administrations’ cruelty. We then invite the irrepressible Jasmine Duff on the pod to talk about the situation in Palestine ahead of the upcoming Herzog visit. Jasmine is both the excellent VS candidate for Footscray and the national co-convenor of Students for Palestine. Make sure you attend these vital protests that are taking place on the 9th of Feb in every city in Australia! We need to shut the whole country down when this criminal lands. Finally we take a detailed look at recent polling by Redbridge that found One Nation is now on a stunning 26%, well ahead of the Coalition on 19%. We look at why this despicably racist figure has become so popular and what the left can and should do about it. 6. The Party Line on Hanson's Invasion Day Antics and the Anti-ICE Revolt in Minneapolis

    JAN 29

The Party Line on Hanson's Invasion Day Antics and the Anti-ICE Revolt in Minneapolis

Episode 20 - The Party Line on Hanson’s Invasion day antics and the Minneapolis uprising against ICE B******t has been confirmed as an essential part of the pod by popular acclaim, and so this ep begins with a healthy serving. So we start by exploring Omar’s first experience of Jordan’s fame, the quality of flooring in the office, and other essential issues facing the nation. The headlines take another look at US imperialism in relation to both Venezuela and Iran, before looking at the unholy alliance of Coles and The Australian, and the impending collapse of the Nationals. The first of our main segments looks at the massive Invasion day demos around the country, the much smaller fascist mobilisations, and the literal bomb thrown at the Invasion day protest in Perth. We then look at the inspirational resistance to ICE in Minneapolis, where 3000 thugs have confronted tens of thousands of students, workers and activists standing against the violent deportations of migrants. The general strike on January 23 was a clear turning point, leading businesses to complain about the disruption and Trump to lead (a partial but much welcomed) RETREAT! As of now the struggle remains ongoing and we send our full solidarity to the people of Minneapolis. Huge thanks to our tireless editors Charlie Wardrop and Persephone Waxman, and special guest editor Auley Ryan. The Party Line on the murder of Kumanjayi Walker: A conversation with Kate Wild, author of The Red House

Episode 19 - The Party Line on the murder of Kumanjayi Walker: A conversation with Kate Wild, author of The Red House This special episode of The Party Line features award winning journalist and author Kate Wild talking about her new book, The Red House: Kumanjayi Walker and Zachary Rolfe. Together we explore the fatal 2019 shooting of Warlpiri teenager Kumanjayi Walker by Constable Zachary Rolfe in Yuendumu, examining the event's connection to Australia's history of structural, institutional  racism. We look at the systematic violence of the criminal justice system, and how it punishes Indigenous people generally, and Indigenous youth in particular, for being poor and Black.  We encourage our readers to grab a copy of the book to learn more about the horrific events surrounding the killing of Kumanjayi Walker. We also recommend The Tall Man by Chloe Hooper as a similarly enraging and moving account of an earlier black death in custody. The Party Line on Invasion day, deaths in custody, and creeping fascism ft. Oskar Martin

Episode 18 - The party line on Invasion day, deaths in custody, and creeping fascism Omar made his glorious return this week, though quickly made it clear he hadn’t bothered listening to the last ep. (Probably for the best, he was easily replaced.) This ep is an Invasion day special, and looks at the past present and future of Aboriginal oppression and resistance in Australia. To help us go through it all, we invited Indigenous socialist Oskar Martin on to the pod (and we thought he was pretty excellent). We begin discussing the roots of Indigenous oppression, including the frontier wars, the massacres, and why stealing the land was so important to the early Australian capitalists. We then look at the sordid history of stolen generations and the genocidal intentions behind the plans to disrupt and dislocate Aboriginal people from their lands, communities and cultures. Finally, we look at the incredible resistance of Aboriginal people backed up by socialists and trade unionists, a proud history that is often glossed over by liberals today. To wrap things up we take a brief look at the appalling new hate speech laws passed by Parliament this week, and their chilling implications for freedom of speech and assembly, and the right to criticise Israel.  Content Headlines:  After Renee Good’s Killing, Some Conservatives Scorn Liberal Women ICE Prosecutor Who Runs Racist X Account Returns to Dallas Immigration Court  The exchange of messages between Norway's prime minister and President Trump “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America…… Thank you!
