    The Pool Isn’t Green Because It’s Hot

    What if your green pool isn’t really a “green pool problem” at all? This week on Pool Envy, we go way past the usual “it’s hot, add more chlorine” advice and into what’s actually happening inside the water. Why can algae show up even when the pool tests like it has chlorine? What role does CYA really play? Why can poor circulation create opportunities for growth? And why does killing algae not necessarily mean you’ve removed what fed it? To make sense of it, we’re taking an unexpected detour into a strange 1970s liminal-space warehouse filled with waterbed mattresses, buzzing fluorescent tubes, leaking containers, and one very questionable quarter-operated machine. Somehow, by the time we leave, phosphates, sequestration, oxidation, circulation, filtration, microbial growth, and nutrient recycling all make a lot more sense. We’ll also talk about why swimming-pool water is not sterile, why microbes are inevitable, how the sourdough-starter analogy explains algae better than most chemistry lectures, why “I have chlorine” may be the beginning of the conversation instead of the end, and why an old filter can become far more involved in the biology of a pool than most homeowners realize. Copper? Phosphates? Dead algae? CYA? Biofilm? Old filter media? Yep. And through all of it, one idea keeps coming back: Contained isn’t removed.Dead isn’t gone.And algae doesn’t need an invitation — it needs an opportunity.     The Strange Case of Swimmer’s Calculus: Teeth, Pool Chemistry & LSI

    Can swimming pool water affect your teeth? The answer involves far more than chlorine. In Episode 34 of the Pool Envy® Podcast, we explore the strange case of swimmer’s calculus — and use it to examine the chemistry connecting our teeth, saliva, swimming pool water, and mineral saturation. We begin with the acquired enamel pellicle, the microscopic protein-rich layer that forms on teeth, including proteins such as statherin, histatins, cystatins, lysozyme, and alpha-amylase. From there, we examine dental calculus, calcium-phosphate mineralization, hydroxyapatite, and documented dental erosion among frequent and competitive swimmers. Then we bring the chemistry back to the swimming pool. What happens to carbonate chemistry as pH changes? How are pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and mineral saturation connected? Why can calcium carbonate either remain dissolved, precipitate as scale, or become vulnerable to dissolution from calcium-containing pool materials? We use those questions to explore the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) and an important concept often missed in swimming pool water chemistry: individual test results cannot always be interpreted independently. We also explain an important distinction between dental and swimming pool chemistry. Tooth enamel consists primarily of hydroxyapatite, a calcium-phosphate mineral, while LSI describes saturation with respect to calcium carbonate. They are different mineral systems, but both demonstrate why pH, dissolved minerals, saturation, and the surrounding chemical environment matter. This episode may be especially interesting for dentists, dental hygienists, orthodontists, endodontists, prosthodontists, restorative and biomimetic dentistry professionals, competitive swimmers, aquatic professionals, swimming pool operators, and water chemistry professionals.     The First Question Is Probably Wrong | How to Spot Real Expertise

    How do you choose a pool builder and how can you tell whether someone truly understands the work they are selling? In this episode of The Pool Envy® Podcast, Jason Davies explains why the first question homeowners ask is often the easiest question rather than the most important one. Choosing tile colors, pool finishes, and construction schedules matters—but those choices reveal little about what will keep the finished pool performing years later. Using examples from recent Standards & Systems Evaluations, Jason examines one swimming pool where tiles were already coming loose and another installation where roughly one-quarter of the tile was left spanning unsupported space. The homeowner had been promised the builder would send “our best guy,” but confidence, experience, premium products, and reassuring language are not substitutes for a sound installation method.
