Blocked coils and fins can cause higher energy consumption and may cause the machine to break down.   Trim Nearby Shrubs To make leaf clean-up easier, trim any adjacent shrubs to prevent them from obstructing the unit, which can restrict the airflow and cause the unit to overwork, leading to a future breakdown.   Check Your Dryer Vent To ensure that dryer lint cannot get inside your AC unit and restrict the airflow, note where your dryer vents, and make sure it doesn’t angle toward your AC unit. Duct vents should be at least 6 feet away from the AC unit.  If you suspect your vents are sending lint into your AC unit, consider installing an air deflector to force the debris in another direction or contacting an HVAC professional for advice.   Raise the Temperature When you know you will be out of the house for a while, raise the temperature on your thermostat by 7 to 10 degrees. This tactic allows your unit to take a break and will ultimately prolong its life. In addition, keeping the AC unit on at a more regular temperature can reduce the humidity in your home, which could cause damage to wood flooring and furniture.     Air Conditioning Maintenance

    Nothing in your home beats the cool air-conditioned breeze to defeat the summer heat.  An air conditioner’s filters, coils, and fins require regular maintenance for the unit to function effectively and efficiently throughout its years of service.  Neglecting necessary maintenance ensures a steady decline in air conditioning performance while energy use steadily increases.   Air Conditioning Maintenance   Air Conditioner Filters The most important maintenance task that will ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner is to routinely replace or clean its filters.  If it can’t breathe, it can’t cool.  Clogged, dirty filters reduce the amount of airflow and significantly reduce a system’s efficiency.  In addition, when airflow is obstructed, air can bypass the filter and deposit dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the coil’s heat-absorbing capacity.  Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5% to 15%. For central air conditioners, filters are generally located somewhere along the return ducts’ length.  Common filter locations are in walls, ceilings, or in the air conditioner itself.  Room air conditioners have a filter mounted in the grill that faces into the room.  Some types of filters are reusable; others must be replaced.  They are available in a variety of types and efficiencies.  Clean or replace your air conditioning system’s filter or filters every month or two during the cooling season.  Filters may need more frequent attention if the air conditioner is in constant use, is subjected to dusty conditions, or you have fur-bearing pets in the house. Air Conditioner Coils The air conditioner’s evaporator coil and condenser coil collect dirt over their months and years of service.  A clean filter prevents the evaporator coil from soiling quickly.  In time, however, the evaporator coil will still collect dirt.  This dirt reduces airflow and insulates the coil, reducing its ability to absorb heat.  To avoid this problem, check your evaporator coil every year and clean it as necessary. Outdoor condenser coils can also become very dirty if the outdoor environment is dusty or if there is foliage nearby.  You can easily see the condenser coil and notice if dirt is collecting on its fins.  You should minimize dirt and debris near the condenser unit.  Your dryer vents, falling leaves, and lawn mower are all potential sources of dirt and debris.  Cleaning the area around the coil, removing any debris, and trimming foliage back at least 2 feet (0.6 meters) allow for adequate airflow around the condenser.   Coil Fins The aluminum fins on evaporator and condenser coils are easily bent and can block airflow through the coil.  Air conditioning wholesalers sell a tool called a “fin comb” that will comb these fins back into nearly original condition.   Condensate Drains Occasionally pass a stiff wire through the unit’s drain channels.  Clogged drain channels prevent a unit from reducing humidity, and the resulting excess moisture may discolor walls or carpet. Window Seals for Room Air Conditioners At the start of each cooling season, inspect the seal between the air conditioner and the window frame to ensure it contacts the unit’s metal case.  Moisture can damage this seal, allowing cool air to escape from your house.   Preparing for Winter In the winter, either cover your room with an air conditioner or remove and store it. Covering the outdoor unit of a central air conditioner will protect the unit from winter weather and debris.   Hiring a Professional When your air conditioner needs more than regular maintenance, such as when it does not reduce the indoor temperature to a comfortable level, hire a professional service technician. A well-trained technician will find and fix problems in your air conditioning system.     Signs that your heating system needs to be serviced

    As temperatures drop and nights get chilly, your heating system works to keep you and your family comfortable.  Long winters increase the demand on your heating system.  No one wants to awaken to an unheated home because the furnace was not serviced.  Furnace should be serviced every year just before the beginning of winter.  In a forced air system with air conditioning and heating (HVAC) system, servicing should be twice a year.   Funny Smells At the beginning of the cold weather season when the heating system is first turned on, there may be a funny smell.  It should dissipate within two hours.  This is normal.  Since dust and debris gets caught in the air filter, make sure to change the filter every 3 months or as recommended by the manufacturer. If a burning smell persists more than two hours, it can be an electrical or mechanical problem requiring repair.  Damaged parts usually smell like plastic or rubber burning.   Ignoring these odors can cause a fire.  Stale, musty smells could indicate the presence of biological growth from excess humidity in the system.  A furnace inspection is warranted and placement of dehumidifier in the basement may be necessary.     How to Prevent Your Furnace from Malfunctioning This Winter | Winter Furnace Monmouth County

    Whether you are a do it for me (DIFM) or a do it yourself (DIY) person, there are some simple tasks to prepare your furnace before the real cold arrives.  Thanksgiving signals two things.  Time to put up the holiday lights and time to switch on the heat.  Check the following list to be sure your furnace is ready for the coming winter.   Turn on the thermostat. Turn on the thermostat and switch from cooling to heating.  Set the temperature a couple of degrees higher than the current room temperature.  If you don’t hear the heat kick on within a minute, pull off the cover and make sure the wire connections look secure.  If the connections are snug, make sure the power source to the HVAC system is turned on.  Some forced air systems have a light switch that needs to be flipped when the seasons change.  If it’s still not working, you could check the furnace fan, blower, or heat pump — but it likely makes better sense to call in a professional.   Change the air filters. You probably have air filters behind a vent grill in the wall or ceiling, or a single filter in the HVAC system itself.  Change these filters every 3 months.  Or, if you have a permanent electrostatic filter, you can wash and reuse it every three months.  Cleaning or replacing your filters regularly keeps dust and particles out of your HVAC system and can prolong its life.  If your HVAC includes a humidifier change the filter and set the humidistat to 35 to 40 percent.   Cover the AC condenser. Heat pumps do not need to be covered and run all year.  For a HVAC system, cover the air conditioning condenser to protect it from snow, ice, and falling icicles.  A large trash can lid secured with bungee cords works quite well for this function.  You can also use a board to cover the fan but don’t wrap it in a plastic tarp which will trap moisture.   Clean the heat exchanger. Annually, the heat exchanger should be brushed and vacuumed out by a trained professional while the unit is disabled.  While it’s being cleaned, a technician will look for cracks, which could lead to a dangerous carbon monoxide leak into your home.   Lubricate and clean the blower motor. First check the owner’s manual to see if your motor is the kind that needs lubricating.  If it does, turn off the power, open the cover and clean the caps covering the bearings.  Then remove the caps and lubricate the bearings.  If this sounds like Greek, call a professional furnace technician to do annual furnace maintenance.   Test the igniter switch. On an old system, you might have to relight the pilot.  Newer systems have electronic ignitors.  If the ignitor isn’t working, push the reset button.  If that doesn’t do the trick, check your breaker.  Call in a professional if it is still not working.   Inspect the chimney and carbon monoxide detectors. Chimneys can be blocked with carbon buildup or even small animals.  A professional should inspect them at the beginning of winter.  Monthly test carbon monoxide detectors as they help protect you.  Replace carbon monoxide detectors every 7-10 years.  Change the batteries twice a year in the spring and fall when the time changes.   If you have an oil-powered furnace, replace your filter, nozzle, and check the tank level. Unlike gas-fired systems, oil units require oil filter changes, burner nozzle cleaning and a thorough heat-exchanger brushing to keep them running efficient since oil doesn’t burn as cleanly as gas.  Annually have a professional technician perform these tasks.     How Snow and Ice can Impact Your HVAC System/ Furnace in snow

    The first snowfall is a transformative event.  You go to bed in a cold, grey world and awake to a frosty blanket of white.  The world is made fresh and new.  It is a peaceful, beautiful sight.  Combating cold, frosty air is no problem when your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is humming a merry tune.  However, icicle damage and heavy snowfall can affect the functioning of your HVAC system. Snow Snow is beautiful but when it surrounds your unit, the whole HVAC system can shut down.  When snow triggers an emergency shutdown, heat is cut-off, waterpipes can freeze, and exterior vents can be blocked. Snow can cause fan damage, airflow problems, rust, and reduced HVAC efficiency.  This leads to expensive HVAC repairs and increased utility bills. Snow makes the entire HVAC system work twice as hard and limited airflow can burn out the furnace.  Replacing the furnace is more costly than a repair. Clear away tree branches. Limbs and branches overhanging an outdoor units need to be removed before the first snow fall.  During a snowstorm, limbs can become heavy causing breakage and damage. Clear snow off the units itself. Heavy snow buildup will cause airflow issues that can damage the heat pump or cause failure of the condenser. Use a broom or warm water to remove snow, never use an icepick or axe. When shoveling snow from walkways and driveways is done, check the air vents and clear them. Do this routinely to prevent damage to the HVAC system. Snowdrifts Snowdrifts can block the furnace exhaust.  This blockage allows harmful chemicals, like carbon monoxide to enter the home.  Every year, 50,000 people are treated in United States emergency departments and 430 people die from accidental carbon monoxide entering the living space of a home.  Most furnaces have an automatic safety switch that will shut down the unit. The pilot sensor makes sure that the pilot light is on before sending gas into the combustion chamber. If there is no pilot light to ignite the burners, the unit automatically turns off.  Up till about 2010, most furnaces came with pilot lights. After 2010, the trend shifted to electronic ignition systems as intermittent pilots or hot surface pilots.
