48: The Hidden Cost of Needing to Be Understood

Why does being misunderstood hurt so much? For many of us, it's not simply because someone doesn't "get" us. It's because, somewhere along the way, our nervous system learned that being understood meant being safe, accepted, or loved. As children, it made sense. We depended on the adults around us to see us, protect us, and respond to our needs. But what happens when we carry that same need into adulthood? In this episode of (re)Parenting Radio, I share a powerful breakthrough from one of my clients who spent years trying to get her mother to understand her. Then one conversation changed everything. Not because her mother changed... Because she did. We explore: • Why being misunderstood can feel so emotionally painful • The difference between understanding and agreement • Why over-explaining is often a subconscious protection pattern • How emotional safety shifts from external validation to internal regulation • What it means to stop abandoning yourself while trying to convince someone else Sometimes freedom doesn't come from finally being understood. Sometimes it comes from realizing you no longer need to be. 47: Why Family Still Triggers You (And How to Handle It)

Have you ever noticed that you become a completely different version of yourself depending on who you're with? Maybe you're confident at work, but quiet around your parents. Maybe you're relaxed with friends but suddenly become the peacemaker at family gatherings. You're not imagining it. In this episode of (re)Parenting Radio, we're exploring why family has a unique way of activating old emotional patterns—and why that's actually one of the greatest opportunities for healing. We'll talk about: • Why family gatherings bring out your inner child • The difference between your personality and your patterns • Why triggers, emotions, and reactions are information—not problems • How your nervous system predicts familiar experiences • Why awareness always comes before change • The simple shift that turns family gatherings into opportunities for growth Healing isn't about never getting triggered again. It's about noticing your patterns with compassion and choosing something different one moment at a time. Because you're not broken. You're patterned. And patterns can be changed. 46: Why What Children Read Matters More Than We Realize

This week I attended a conference where the conversation centered around childhood literacy, declining reading scores, shrinking attention spans, and the growing influence of screens. I agreed with every bit of it. But I couldn't stop asking a different question... What are we programming our children with when they do read? Because children don't just learn from books. They learn from the stories we tell. The stories we live. The emotions we modelThe relationships they witness. The patterns they experience every single day.In this episode, we explore: Why the first eight years of life matter so much How repeated experiences shape the subconscious mind Why stories become emotional blueprints The connection between childhood programming and adult patterns Why I wrote Courage Finds His Calm How awareness allows us to interrupt patterns before we pass them onWhether you're raising children, working with children, or simply trying to understand yourself a little better, this conversation is ultimately about the stories that shape us all. Because children are always reading something. And awareness gives us the opportunity to become more intentional about what they're learning. You're not broken. You're patterned. And patterns can be changed. 45: Why Do I Keep Repeating the Same Mistakes?

Most of us don't wake up thinking... "Today I'm going to people please." Or... "Today I'm going to overreact." Or... "Today I'm going to repeat the same relationship pattern again." We simply react. Automatically. But what if those reactions aren't your personality? What if they're patterns your nervous system learned long ago? In this week's episode, we explore why awareness is the first step toward lasting change—and how recognizing a pattern gives you something incredibly powerful: Choice. In this episode, you'll learn five signs you may be living from a pattern instead of conscious choice: It feels automatic. It keeps repeating.Your reaction feels bigger than the moment. It sounds like identity. It feels familiar...even when it doesn't feel good.Because... Patterns create automatic lives. Awareness creates conscious ones. If you've ever wondered why you keep reacting the same way, attracting the same dynamics, or feeling stuck in the same cycles, this episode is for you. You're not broken. You're patterned. And patterns can be changed. 44: The Most Important Word I've Added to My Vocabulary

For years, I believed words like anxious, people pleaser, perfectionist, and over thinker described who we are. Then one word changed everything. Pattern. In this episode, I share why understanding ourselves through the lens of patterns completely transformed the way I see human behavior, relationships, parenting, and healing. Children don't consciously choose survival strategies. They adapt. Over time, those adaptations become familiar patterns that shape the way we relate to ourselves, other people, conflict, love, money, and even our own worth. When we stop asking... "What's wrong with me?" ...and begin asking... "What pattern created this?" everything changes. In this episode, we explore: • Why many adult behaviors are intelligent childhood adaptations  • How our nervous system learns what feels safe and familiar  • The connection between attachment, subconscious programming, and relationships  • Why awareness creates compassion—not blame  • The question that completely changed the direction of my life after my divorce  • Why I believe people aren't broken—they're patterned If you've ever wondered why you keep repeating certain behaviors, relationships, or emotional responses, this episode is for you. Because healing doesn't begin with fixing yourself. It begins with understanding yourself. 43: Bruce Lipton Gave Me Permission to Change

Over ten years ago, one Bruce Lipton interview sent me down a rabbit hole that changed the course of my life. It wasn't his work on epigenetics that captivated me. It was his willingness to admit that despite his success, he wasn't happy—and his realization that subconscious programming was quietly shaping his life. That single idea led me to spend the next decade studying neuroscience, attachment theory, nervous system regulation, child development, and human behavior. In this episode, I share the story behind that journey and explain how our earliest relationships quietly become the blueprint for the way we see ourselves, others, and the world. You'll learn: • How subconscious beliefs are formed • Why childhood environments matter so much • A simple explanation of attachment theory • How today's children are being shaped by both family and digital environments • Why relationship patterns repeat across generations • How awareness creates the opportunity for lasting change Because once you understand that you're not broken—you begin to realize you're patterned. And patterns can change. 42: The Myth of Finally Arriving

For years, I thought personal growth would eventually lead to certainty. Maybe even a mystical place. That one day I'd finally heal. Finally figure it out. Finally become the person I was working so hard to become. But life keeps teaching me something different. Every time I think I've reached the bottom of something... Another layer appears. This week's episode is a reflection on Newsletter #100, motherhood, identity shifts, subconscious programming, nervous system regulation, relationships, and the many versions of ourselves we leave behind as we grow. One of my favorite lines from the episode: "We are constantly saying goodbye to old versions of ourselves while learning to embrace the new versions that are emerging." If you've ever felt like you should be further along by now, this conversation is for you. 41: Menopause, THC, and the Day My Nervous System Hijacked Reality

After eight years of using THC on and off to help manage menopausal night sweats and sleep disruption, I decided to take another break. Within days, my sleep was wrecked, my resting heart rate skyrocketed, my patience disappeared, and everything in my life suddenly felt harder than it should. What followed was a powerful reminder of something I've seen repeatedly in both my personal life and my work with clients: Many of the problems we think we have are actually symptoms of nervous system dysregulation. In this episode, I share my real-time experience navigating menopause, THC withdrawal, sleep deprivation, reduced caffeine, and a nervous system that was not happy about any of it. We explore: • Menopause and nervous system regulation • THC, dependency, and adaptation • Why sleep changes everything • Childhood conditioning and subconscious programming • How the nervous system learns survival strategies • Why so many adults live in chronic dysregulation • The difference between a life problem and a nervous system problem If you've ever found yourself convinced that your relationship, job, parenting, future, or entire life was falling apart, this episode may offer a different perspective. Sometimes the problem isn't your life. Sometimes the problem is an overwhelmed nervous system trying to get your attention. You are not broken. You are patterned.
