    "You open a second one and it just sort of brings you back to your knees": Mary Hartt of Dysart's

    On this episode of The Ric and Dan Show, Dan and Ric interview Mary Dysart Hartt, co-owner of Dysart's and owner of Mary Hartt Photography. This time, the three talk about Purpleberry Pie life, Saturday Night Live, and the soul you can find in still lives. At one point, Ric had to write a song about Dysart's for an awards ceremony, and he recalls some of it here: Mary's father and the father before him were in the gas station business, and that's how it all started. That family connection is one of the things Dan loves most about the place, second only to the pancakes. Those family ties even made their way into Dysart's iconic "Buttery Flaky Crust" video... You can hear them giggling away in the background! It floored everyone when they saw it reached all the way into New York on Saturday Night Live. But even now, the chicken pot pies cannot outsell Dysart's pumpkin chip cookies. That's true at the restaurants, at the truck stops, and even the travel stops as well, each one another step in the business evolution of Dysart's. It's been a bumpy ride, but you can make it when you hold on. It's like they say: "You can't take up drinking when you gotta run." Unless you're in Millinocket. Dan knows all about that.     "I don't want my kids to listen to this episode": Doctor Curt Young of Vision Care of Maine

    On this episode of The Ric and Dan Show, our boys are being put to the test... the eye test, that is! Here with Dr. Curt Young, President and Medical Director of Vision Care of Maine, they talk about what the profession gets right, what the movies get wrong, and how sitting too close to the TV doesn't actually damage your eyes, it just really sucks.  At first, they're just chatting about the eye charts (they really do have the copyright details down at the bottom!) when Dan tells a story, and Ric tells a joke, classically. Then it's revealed that there's a difference between an ophthalmologist, an optometrist, and an octamologist, one of which does not actually exist! But Curt is one of them, and he can tell you– when you start out, you don't necessarily know which one you want to end up as. But Curt grew up around ophthalmologists, grew up around ophthalmology, and knew from a young age that he wanted to do see all there is to see about seeing.     "I'm like, 'No, I don't want to go back into construction, at all. So anyway, I'm back in construction": Maynard Pelletier of Maine Fire Protection

    On this episode of The Ric and Dan Show, Ric and Dan talk with Maynard Pelletier, the President of Maine Fire Protection Systems, about avoiding warts, movie clichés, and taking care of those who take care of you.   Maine Fire Protection Systems is "number one", as Maynard proudly says, and he isn't wrong: they have the very first fire protection license in the state. Right on the page, it reads loud and clear: "number 1". He grew up around Mile Marker One, and even as a child 10 out of 10, he still gets ranked pretty high. A life where growing up was painted with work and small rewards forged Maynard into quite the go-getter, and it was no wonder that he set out to make a buisness when he was older.     "What are you gonna do about it? You fix the problem and go on" : Jason Clay of Governor's and Anglers

    On this episode of The Ric and Dan Show, our intrepid hosts have a chat with Jason Clay, owner of Governor's and Anglers Restaurant. They talk about how times change, as time likes to, how people grow, as people tend to, and how no matter what you do, the ice cream machine always ends up breaking... but it's always something you can fix. Sometimes the way you think you'll go in life isn't the way you'll end up, which is what got Jason Clay out of selling ball bearings for a living. But Governors was always there for him, through his childhood and into college, and it was really inevitable that he'd take up the reins. It's a legendary place, much like the moose burger (it's not made of moose, and neither is the burger), and both Dan and Ric have their stories with the governor, too. So do many others in Maine, parents, politicians, even a celebrity or two. The three get to talking about Make-A-Wish, bear pears, and the art of bringing people together.  Tom spent his days working for the Boy Scout Council of Portland, and after that, 18 years as the executive director of Make-A-Wish Maine, and after that, he started working for the Alumni Association. His whole career has been in the non-profit-- it makes him feel like the Grinch, but not in the way you'd expect. It's all about sparking joy, and keeping that flame going.     On this episode of The Ric and Dan Show, Ric and Dan sit down with Brian and Kevin Bowman of Bowman Constructors. They talk about splitting wood, getting crazy, and who's more likely to lose sleep. It started with driving nails into an old house as kids, and then they graduated to mowing lawns, but in truth it was the Bowman's father who gave Brian and Kevin their love for construction. They were kids, but child labor laws didn't reach that far back then. Even then, this helped them make several screw-ups and made them learn the art of fixing their own mistakes. There were several times when they were told they were crazy: there were several times when they had to prove how successful crazy can be.     On a special episode of The Ric and Dan Show, the boys from Bangor take their questions straight to the top, and speak with Biguita Hernandez-Smith, the Economic Development Officer of the City of Bangor, Maine. The three talk about Staten Island, Zumba, and how crucial communication is for community. Ric is the only one on time to the interview: we know this because he left it in the edit. Once Biguita enters, she also brings the facts in (facts are a first for this show). She tells the story of how an unexpected loss has led to an unexpected change, and how an unexpected change can lead to unexpected gains. She talks about her responsibilities, helping nourish entrepreneurs and woo outside businesses into Bangor, all the while navigating the foreign trade zone. She talks about her time in Houston, her time in New York, and how both worlds have factored into the person she is today. Meanwhile, the gang gets spiritual as they talk about the divine, and Dan and Biguita connect through their experiences with Staten Island.     "We were both too young to be scared": Tyler and Mitch Smith of Greenway Equipment

    Start your engines and set the blades to speed, because on this episode, Dan and Ric of The Ric and Dan Show welcome aboard Tyler and Mitch Smith of Greenway Equipment to talk about winning luck, losing fish, and playing another round of "Who's More Likely". Ric admits that he dressed up as Peter Criss of KISS one Halloween. It's alright, because Mitch and Tyler dressed like KISS every Sunday afternoon. Being in a family business takes a lot out of you, especially in The County: the Smiths recall early morning workdays, seven days a week with a job and a home to balance. There's an art to finding a balance of understanding between you and your siblings, and sometimes if you have the right spot, the right time, and the right people, you'll still need that spark of luck. But if you work hard and invest your time and energy as best you can, you can maybe generate a little luck for yourself. "If it doesn't rain, the grass won't grow."
