The state's witness is Sherry Culhane from the Wisconsin State Crime lab. In this episode we learn how they do their testing at the lab, the protocols, the safeguards, etc. But here's what sticks out to me. She qualifies her statements; a lot. “We try to…” “We attempt to…” “We generally…” You would expect (or at least hope) that if someone is testing your stuff, you'd want definitive answers not ones that say "well, we did our best". If you’ve ever wondered how DNA evidence was tested back in 2006, what the standards were and how the process went, this episode will explain all that. Katie Halbach, Teresa's sister and her story about jeans, and Ron Groffy who was one of the people involved in taking photos of Teresa's car shortly after it arrived at the lab. And we've got some questions. First, Katie says something about Teresa owning a pair of Daisy Fuentes jeans. You know, the same brand of rivets found in a burn barrel. That's a bit concerning. The thing is, Katie doesn't know much about these jeans, only that Teresa had a pair at some point in time. Then we hear from Ron Groffy—he was called in on his day off to take photos of Teresa's car. Which would lead you to think that maybe the car had just arrived because he was the guy who took "before" pictures. Before the evidence techs started rummaging through it, getting fingerprints, and so forth. The problem though, the big problem, is that he said the driver's side door was unlocked when he arrived to take photos. At the scene, a big deal was made about the car being locked. So what was it? Locked or unlocked? Then we see what appears to be some kind of prints on the back wheel cover of the vehicle which didn't appear there before. What gives? Four months, if we're being precise. What's sketchy though is that he mentions that Lt. James Lenk was on the scene in this much later search of the garage. Steier had no clue that Lenk had been called to testify in the civil lawsuit that Avery had against Manitowoc County and Manitowoc wasn't even supposed to be involved. So why were they there at all? Since Steier didn't know about this civil lawsuit, he didn't really pay much attention to what all was happening in the garage itself. No one told him to keep an eye on those Manitowoc guys.
