Navigating Trauma, Mental Health & Life as a Pro Athlete | Malkia Ngounoue

Behind every athlete is a story the world doesn't always get to see. In this episode of Going For It, I sit down with professional tennis player Malkia Ngounoue for one of the most personal and vulnerable conversations we've had on the podcast. We talk about the realities of growing up in competitive sports while navigating mental health challenges, childhood trauma, sexual abuse, and living with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Malkia opens up about her experiences, the challenges she's faced, and what it means to continue pursuing a career as a professional athlete while carrying experiences that extend far beyond the tennis court. As athletes, we're often taught to be strong, push through difficult moments, and keep going no matter what. But what happens when the biggest challenges you're facing have nothing to do with your performance on the court? Throughout our conversation, we explore the importance of mental health, the impact our childhood experiences can have on our lives, and the reality that success as an athlete doesn't mean everything behind the scenes is easy. This episode is about more than tennis. It's about vulnerability, understanding, healing, and recognizing that athletes are human beings first. I'm incredibly grateful to Malkia for trusting me with her story and for being willing to have conversations that aren't always easy, but are incredibly important. Sometimes the most meaningful conversations are the ones we are afraid to have. A message to our listeners: This episode includes sensitive discussions surrounding childhood trauma, sexual abuse, and mental health. If you or someone you know is navigating mental health challenges, has experienced abuse or trauma, or is struggling emotionally, please know that support is available. You don't have to navigate these experiences alone, and reaching out for help is a sign of strength. You can connect with a licensed mental health professional, a trusted support person, or organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) at nami.org or RAINN, which provides confidential support for survivors of sexual violence, at rainn.org. our experiences matter. Your mental health matters. And your story is so much more than the challenges you've faced. Thank you for being part of Going For It and for helping us create a space where conversations like these can happen. A huge thank you to InnerTennis for making this episode possible and for providing the space and filming this conversation. Love, Ambition & Life on the Tennis Tour - With Raphaëlle Lacasse and Jesse Flores

In Episode 3 of Going For It, I sit down with Jesse Flores and Raphaëlle Lacasse, two professional tennis players who are navigating the highs and lows of the sport while also navigating life together. Jesse, a Canadian with Costa Rican roots, and Raphaëlle, a French Canadian, both have their own stories, ambitions, and experiences in tennis. In this conversation, we get into how their journeys brought them together and what it's really like having a partner who understands the pressures, sacrifices, uncertainty, and commitment that come with pursuing tennis professionally. We talk about balancing two individual careers while building a life together, traveling and competing, supporting each other through wins, losses, injuries, and difficult moments, and figuring out how to leave tennis on the court when the day is over. As athletes, so much of our lives revolve around the next match, the next tournament, and the next goal. But what happens when you're building a relationship in the middle of all of it? I loved getting to hear Jesse and Raphaëlle's perspective on love, ambition, culture, competition, and what they've learned from choosing to navigate this journey together. A huge thank you to InnerTennis for making this episode possible and for providing the space and filming this conversation. Her Second Shot at Pro Tennis - With Francis Altick

What happens when the dream you walked away from starts calling you back? In this episode of Going For It, I sit down with professional tennis player Frances Altick to talk about a journey that looks nothing like the traditional path to becoming a pro athlete. After years of competing, setbacks, injuries, and eventually losing her way within the sport, Frances made the decision to step away from tennis. She built a life outside the court, became an occupational therapist, and for a while, professional tennis was part of her past. Until it wasn't. Frances found her way back to the sport, and now she's competing professionally again, this time with an entirely different perspective on who she is, why she plays, and what success means to her. We talk about the difficult seasons that don't make the highlight reel: injuries, uncertainty, stepping away from something that once defined you, building an identity outside of your sport, and finding the courage to come back even when your path doesn't look like everyone else's. What I love about Frances' story is that it's a reminder that Going For It doesn't always mean never quitting. Sometimes it means walking away, growing into someone new, finding your way back, and realizing you're not finished yet. A huge thank you to InnerTennis for making this episode possible and for providing the space and filming this conversation.
